Or they didn't like him appreciably more than the next 11 guys.

That trade basically put the Pats back in regular play for the rest of the draft. They sat out the first 2.5 rounds but the rest they can now move how they please.

I like the two players, but they gave up more to move up for a lower pick than they got to move down from a higher pick.

Don't be surprised if he trades 2 of his 3 picks today for picks next year. His one pick today will probably be a DB.

I like the two players, but they gave up more to move up for a lower pick than they got to move down from a higher pick. Shows it's an imperfect science and that you need a dance partner to move around. If they never moved down they probably can't move back up. Which could have resulted in them just having one of the two players.

Mayock thinks Rivers can be a versatile defender, standing up and playing inside linebacker as well as dropping to the edge to rush the passer. If nothing else, if he's smart enough to play this defense it's going to be fun for them to draw up plays using him and Hightower where the defense doesn't know who's coming and who's dropping.

The Rivers pick reminds me of the Collins pick. Great athletes who put up good combine stats and had great production against lower level competition.

My draft magazines have him ranked second, third and sixth among OT. With draft projections of 1st round, 2nd round and 2nd-3rd round. I was just upset at losing that 4th rounder as there will be a very good player there. I really love the two picks. They got good value and it filled two very big needs. I liked Garcia a lot, never thought he would drop this far. Very impressed so far!

Rivers was in my 5-6 players group that I thought we needed to get one of them. He should help the pass rush next year. I think he'll need some time to develop though, as he seems to need to add weight. I don't know maybe Mayock is right they plan on using him in a hybrid role. Thing is did he do that in College? Collins was a hybrid player in College. Rivers seems to have been more of just an DE at College. The big question I have is how does he do in coverage?
Even if he's just a DE I like the pick,as he gets after the QB and makes negative plays. We now have solid depth at DE, which was a must.

I certainly am happy with the first 2 picks as they kind of cross off my first three needs with two picks. Since I'm tired of the running back talk I am going to attempt to switch gears a bit. What do people think are the Patriots top 5 draft needs or targets? I'll start: 1. Edge rusher - Nink is at his end and they need either a young compliment to Flowers or a third rotational guy to replace Nink. This is even with Ealy. 2. Offensive tackle depth - Solder is a FA and has had injury issues. They have no young prospects here capable of replacing or filling in during the year. This might be 1b. 3. Linebacker - I like the starters as a unit and I like Roberts, but it gets thin real quick and even when Hightower is out the Van Noys and McClellens are not as good anymore. My next two needs were Defensive back and running back. But they extended White and signed Gillislee two a 2 year deal so RB is no longer a need. I wouldn't mind seeing another LB or DB, but ultimately I think I will understand any position they take other than QB.... WR would be tough too but later in the draft you might take practice squad guys so that would make sense. Trent Taylor I'm looking at you.

I think they'd go for a LBer, a TE, and a DB now, but one thing I've learned over the years is that when you expect the obvious, Belichick doesn't.
I actually expect some sort of special-team standout, too, with most of their developmental prospects being taken as UDFAs and being viewed as less 'poachable' off practice squads.
