Sure you don't now what level of interest they had, but they obviously like something about him. It also made a ton of sense, a hard hitting SS with balls skills. When it comes to Patriots it's about the only thing you have to go by. The other thing we have to go by is that they knew who was available to draft and decided to trade for O'Shaugnassy instead. It seems like you're mildly criticizing them for going against what you think they wanted.

Wasn't the trade before they were on the clock tho?

Interesting factoid (ok, I'll leave it up to you to decide if it's interesting): McDermott is less than 2 months younger than Cam Flemming.

This is sort of Patriots related but the Bills GM and entire scouting staff has been fired.
Geeze, I wonder if this has anything to do with letting all their good free agents and their restricted free agents walk to the Patriots because they're in cap jail?
This organization is the funniest one to watch fall apart. Every single move up and down the entire organization has been a train wreck for at least 4-5 years now.

At the same time he needs to show more than he's good at special teams. Undrafted free agents can be great at special teams. How good of a TE is he? We have a need for a TE that can actually catch the ball.

I believe he's a receiving tight end more than an inline guy. He's supposed to be a matchup problem move tight end. The guys young still has 2 years on his rookie deal and will stay cheap. I have no issues giving up a 5th for a guy if he can be a core type special teams player and provide a receiving depth option at Tight End. Considering the way the team is constructed he may be taking the Mingo spot on special teams units and doing that with a third tight end may allow them to use a guy as a backup differently some place else.

Special teams players aren't all created equal. You need guys who can play all different spots on special teams. Can't all be smaller gunners, etc. When guys at one position can play special teams it means a guy at another position may not need to.

As long as he can catch the ball and be a receiving TE then it should be a good move. I just see our 3rd TE playing a good amount this year with Gronk and Allens injury issues. That's why we need a guy that can catch, more than a special team stud. If he can do both great!

If one of Gronkowski or Allen is injured, I see them going to more three-receiver sets as opposed to playing O'Shaugnassy (or another third tight end). Between Cooks, Edelman, Hogan, Amendola and Mitchell, that third WR is almost certainly going to be a better option than the next man up at TE.

The issue is if they both get injured and theres a fairly high chance that could happen.

Really? I understand Gronk has a decent injury history, but outside of a season ending hip injury in 2013, Allen has had pretty good attendance in Indy. TE is actually a pretty crowded position for this team, with about 4 guys who could probably be a pretty capable 3rd TE.

Do either Lengel or Williams have practice squad eligibility? Even if not they are probably Street free agents they can own.

I'm really interested on who they carry on their offensive line depth chart this year. How many do they carry on the 53 man roster?
The UCLA kid should probably go on the practice squad. Hopefully, they can get him there without losing him. He's really raw. Fleming was the swing tackle this past season and the sixth offensive lineman on jumbo packages... is he cut or do they carry 8?
Starting 5:
Solder Thuney Andrews Mason Cannon
Backups:
Karras (interior) Garcia (Tackle)
Bubble:
Flemming Wendel

TE is actually a pretty crowded position for this team, with about 4 guys who could probably be a pretty capable 3rd TE. He missed 15 games in 2013, 3 games in 2014, 3 games in 2015 and 2 games last year. He's played in 16 games once in his career, his rookie season in 2012. We have a bunch of players, not sure we have great depth. Do you feel great about any of those guys being your #1 TE for a couple games next year? What about in a playoff game? If the new guy can catch we'll be Ok. The fact they traded for him shows they thought we needed more depth.

Wouldn't shock me either way. I would think the plan is to get McDermott to practice squad. The thing is does he make it? Teams love to claim our players, seems like we lose one every year.

I agree 100% Langi is the guy I think is most likely to make team right now. They really like him, he is very versatile and we have a need. You can't overlook Hollister the TE, $90,000 is a lot of money. They have to really like him. At worst he seems like a strong candidate for the practice squad.

Just seems strange when Ed Werder, who is so prominent during the draft, is let go the day before that. It's not telling in anyway. Nothing going on. Just weird. Joe McDonald was let go too. I like him for hockey. It's coming out now that ESPN, after firing Werder, actually asked him to cover the draft (from the Saints perspective). Sounds like someone didn't think the timing through.

Sounds like Hollister is the receiving TE depth. From footballguys.com:
Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss
Undrafted free-agent TE Jacob Hollister (Wyoming) received a $10,000 signing bonus and a $80,000 guaranteed base salary upon signing with the New England Patriots.

Hollister is an interesting move tight end to keep an eye on...especially in New England. He's a good route runner and a deep threat. Hollister tracks passes well over his shoulder and does a good job of securing passes after the catch. He's not much of a blocker, but he is certainly a weapon the Patriots could develop. We're excited by his addition in super deep dynasty leagues.

It's smart because it doesn't cost them any salary cap space
