The more I read about Scherff, the less I understand how he dropped as far as he did. Or why he was ranked as low as he was.

Is money for continued college after the playing career is over still considered cap free under the new CBA? I believe so. I saw an article about a HS player signing with TOR for $50,000 and he referenced that any future college tuition was part of the deal.

The more I read about Scherff, the less I understand how he dropped as far as he did. Or why he was ranked as low as he was. Me too. My guess though is that he generated little hype prior to his senior year (and was transferring between schools on a yearly basis). I'm assuming this based on the info that he shed a bunch of weight and went from throwing in the mid 80s to the mid 90s. I think typically, many of the guys drafted in the first round have been heavily on scouts' radars for at least a couple of years. In that sense, helium can push a guy to the back end of the first round/second round and in our case we're lucky to get the guy in the 5th.

Found this older Fangraphs article (August 2016) taking an early look at prep catchers and it made mention of Beau Hanna:

It might also be helpful to remind folks that draftees, their friends and families could be lurking on these pages. I am most interested in their skills on the field and how they can help the Red Sox. That's a good point.. Also current prospect families.. Some met last year and took multiple pictures of messaged over the off season here and DL'd some up close that had posted here last year of their son. It has always bothered me that we (bloggers of any sport site) discuss players and prospects and draftees as if they were inanimate pieces in some esoteruc board game. They are "bought and sold" in language not dissimilar to old slave markets, as opposed to dealing with their contracts. Their issues and warts are often talked about as if we were updating a phone or getting a new car. Maybe this detached approach protects us from getting humanly attached to players, preventing ego involvements that cause emotional discomfort, even pain. Maybe. If my high schoolers were lucky enough to be drafted (two of them were, in pre-anonymous internet days, but in soccer, oh well) and they were publicly talked about like pieces of meat or, even worse, demeaned in the local media of the time, that would be unacceptable and unforgiveable. This site is, of course, more human and humane than most others in my experience. Even so, I wonder if it could move even more in that direction, becoming a counterweight to traditional media and other sites. Man's inhumanity to man is now online, anonymous, often bullying, and its direction is disturbing. Pardon the rant.

When should we expect to see the Draft History page updated with this years picks? They were updated almost in real time. Do you mean the signings?

"Wait a minute, that's ripguy's music!!" </Jim Ross voice> This one is interesting though. Deadline of this weekend? My guess is that it's really "you have until this weekend to accept THIS offer, otherwise we'll get back to you in a few weeks" and it got lost in translations somewhere from team to player+family to reporter.

Overall I like what they did. I'm not a big fan of drafting what is probably going to be a bullpen pitcher (according to what they said on tv draft day- though obviously who knows?) in the 1st round. But supposedly he does have one potential dynamic pitch and if he can develop one other - at least one could say we have a potential dynamic reliever.
The 2nd round pick was fine.
Not a fan of the 3rd round pick, but I liked the 4th and 5th. And a nice gamble with the 6th.
I July I guess they will look to draft more bats (ofc depending on who is available)?

Not a good outing for Thompson in the CWS. He struggled with command and he didn't appear to have a put away pitch. 78 pitches in less than 4 innings.

With Lowell starting tomorrow and the GCL starting the 26th will the Sox announce some signings ticketed for Lowell today?. I assume most signings are done per the already reported news.

I wish that the league would publish signings and dollar amounts after the contracts are submitted to them. It gets really fuzzy with articles from all over the internet. Is there a reason to hide this information?
