I'm sorry but your idea of 2 years implies they will have better options down the road. Look at it this way in the tightest market I can ever remember he was the best they could do. I would have preferred Parker, but with his injuries he's even more of a gamble. LaVine was averaging 18.9 points with very good shooting numbers at age 21 before the injury. Had improved every year. Came into the league as a crazy raw athlete basically, but got better for three straight years. He's been compared to a younger Jamal Crawford, Which I agree with. That's not bad for this Kings team.
You have marching orders to improve the team, get more fans in the stands, and become a playoff team sooner rather than later. What would you have done?
You also have 40 million plus in cap space next year. Yet only way your going to get any really good free agents is to be seen as an up and coming team. I believe LaVine would have helped with that, not more 2 year deals with players like Randolph. Even the Lakers struggled getting free agents recently. If I was the owner I would have done things differently, but given the owners wishes LaVine was the best they could do. He's like Wiggins, but making a lot less money.

My comment was on the organization not just the GM specifically. It works as a whole. If he GM is under a mandate from his bosses then he has no choice and I wouldn’t hold it against him but it is the wrong philosophy. The Celtics had a long standing reputation of not being a free agent destination. You change that by not being dumb anymore and developing a good culture. Maybe they think the cap will rise so much that 18m won’t be much of a contract down the road; I think it’s a bad gamble. I’d spend the money differently and develop younger players and maintain my cap flexibility to I can continue to acquire assets (like you mentioned) and then pounce when my time is right. It seems like we probably agree with what they should do (mostly), but you were defending the GM making the more versus the team. I was criticizing the team not necessarily the GM.

Good force us over the luxury tax so we can deal Rozier and Morris for Butler after we tamper and have him force a trade.

So very quietly Brook Lopez, sign a very cheap 1 year deal with the Bucks. He’s almost a perfect Center for them. He’s going to space the floor really well. It’s too bad GM LeBron is terrible because there is no reason the Lakers shouldn’t have been all over him to return.

Good force us over the luxury tax so we can deal Rozier and Morris for Butler after we tamper and have him force a trade. All depends if they go crazy. I'm willing to pay Smart, but I wouldn't match the offer they gave LaVine. I do have to say I love your glass half full take on the Celtics. I'm so torn over this, the one team I wouldn't want him going to. Even though he's not really a great fit for a team that has Fox, he brings a ton of stuff the Kings could really use. Losing Smart for nothing is one thing, but seeing him go to a team he could improve which hurts our pick on top of that is crazy. So yea if you're going to blow past the cap this year, go get Butler. That is really the only way it makes sense, because I'm just not sure that Smart is worth the extra year of 100 to 200 million in extra tax. Butler would be, epically if that helps lockdown Irving. Paying Smart next year when you're most like a tax paying team and going into the tax a year early for Smart is totally different. Nevermind lets forget Butler, that kinda seems crazy. Minny has to trade him, which means he basically has to force his way out. Not a given that happens or that another team doesn't offer more. Given the option of paying Smart or Rozier, I'd pay Rozier.

I’m irrationally excited about Jabari Bird

He's great at that price. I just don't get the Bucks adding IIyasova and Lopez. Good depth moves, where's the guy to battle Embiid? I'm also not a big fan of Lopez taking so many 3's, it makes his bad rebounding even worse. I really liked him scoring in the post. Also it seems to push Maker down the depth chart, when he was great for them in the playoffs. His engery and ability to block shots was huge. I might have went after an Alex Len instead given the roster. Not even close to the player Lopez is, but he fills a need. They don't have a big guy that can play D and rebound. That isn't Lopez.

Yeap, sounds like Smart's agent is getting desperate to draw up interest.

If the Kings offer up anything more than what the C's can afford just by dumping Morris it will make DA's life difficult. The C's really shouldn't start cap hell this year considering they will be in it for a long time starting next year.
I do understand there can be many arguments for and against but getting Butler is a long shot unless the C's give up a lot to get him. The core of the next few years shouldn't be messed with.

There are tons of reports saying the Kings have no interest in Smart. Regarding Butler, they wouldn’t trade any core players for him. Maybe the Kings pick but that’s probably even unlikely knowing Danny. So it’s probably not happening.

Blakely a Celtics guy is saying the Kings have interest. Jones a Kings guy is saying nothing too that report, but the Kings coach would like a player like Smart. Jones is also the guy who a day before the Smart news said it was Hood who they wanted. Both would have sources and every article litterally sites one or the other.
I have zero sources but Parker, Smart, and even Hood all make perfect sense for the Kings. Pick one of the three and you have a good chance of being right. I'd put Hood last just because the Cavs are already a tax paying team and he's the least valuable player of the three. It does make sense though. He fits the model of young guy with upside.

Blakely a Celtics guy is saying the Kings have interest ... Could be a quid pro quo. Or just a sympathetic beat guy doing a player/agent a solid.

Blakely a Celtics guy is saying the Kings have interest ... Could be a quid pro quo. Or just a sympathetic beat guy doing a player/agent a solid. If you're implying Blakely passed along information he knew was false to just help a player/agent I don't agree. He did his job to report what was passed along to him. You can certainly debate if its real or if maybe Smarts agent is just drumming up interest. I just find the report to be more real, just my opinion. I don't get why you'd say an offer is coming if its not true, over the Kings are thinking about making an offer. Who knows I don't like his agent, maybe he just sucks. www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2018-nba-free-agency-rumors-marcus-smart-still-meeting-with-teams-open-to-taking-less-than-15m-per-year/Meeting with four teams, pictures show one of those meetings was the Nets who now have like 11 million in cap space. I think a fair guess is the other teams are the Kings, Bulls and Hawks. Those are the only teams that can offer him 10 million or more and there just so happens to be four of them. He wants a long-term deal, which makes sense. Its why if you want to keep him I trade Morris and make him an offer starting around 10 million. With built in raises you can offer him something like 4 years 46 million, 5 years 60 million. We are the only team that can offer him 5 years and larger raises. If we make the deal we can set the terms, hence a salary in year one that doesn't make us a tax paying team.

I'm suggesting it, not "implying it", because it's a common practice. Whether it's happening here is impossible to tell. But it would not surprise me in the least if M Sherrod got fed something "wink wink" and he rolled with it.
Remember Deflategate -- Mort & Pete King and others doing the league office's bidding? Same thing, just in this case less nefarious. And, as I've read, an age old practice.

Anyone else remember early on in Commissioner Bud's tenure how Gammons used to kill him? Right up until he didn't. Stopped cold turkey. Wonder why -- the used car salesman turned commissioner suddenly could do no wrong?

I don't think its common practice to pass along information that is knowingly false. I don't for a second think Mort or King knowingly passed along bad information about deflate gate. I didn't like how they never addressed the issue after they knew it was false, but I believe they thought it was truthful information at the time. I blame the Colts and the NFL, they knowingly spread false information, and even stopped measuring the Colts balls when it didn't fit the narrative they wanted.

Isaiah Thomas - 1 year veteran minimum... OUCH!!!
Even during his “MVP” year, I argued he’s best suited for a sixth man role and I still think this is the case on a championship caliber team. He’s just too small to be on the court defensively. I really hope he has a big year in this role and gets a nice contract the following season.

A few of you guys may have seen the Celts-Knicks game yesterday. Mitchell Robinson, the 7'1" center 7'4" wing span the Knicks drafted in the second round was immense. 6 or 7 blocks AND he can shoot...nice stroke. And talk about dunking with your elbows! He completely choked off the inside....man among boys look. This guy will be a player. Along with Knox, the Knicks are on the rise in the East.
I am amazed at the number of very athletic big men coming into the league. Williams and Robinson, as athletic as they are, were down in this year's pecking. This could be foreshadowing a seismic, not subtle, evolution in the game.

I agree, but if he gets back to what he was he'll be closing out games. That was the problem with him, he was so good offensively that you had to play him in crunch time. Heck he won us so many games and Harris is a great fit at SG for him. As much as I love Murray he's not a full-time PG on a good team. Not yet anyways. As good as that move was for Denver, its other moves were headscratchers. They dumped Chandler for nothing, then used a first round pick to get rid of Faried and Arthur to get under the tax. All three were on expiring deals. Chandler and Faried are both above average players, plus a first round pick and they got nothing in return. If you want to win trading assets to save money isn't a great way to do business. On the flip side the Nets have been on fire recently. Gotta love what they have been doing.
