Eovaldi was a brilliant pickup. Probably the best pitcher the Sox could get all deadline value wise all around. I hope they resign him.

This is total BS: #Statcast Verified account @statcast 10m10 minutes ago More Is there any ball @jackiebradleyjr can't get to? The redsox CF got a standing ovation at Fenway for this brilliant 4-star play, in which he covered 78 feet to convert a 42% catch probability. The wall is what really makes the play difficult. 42% sounds about right if we're not in Fenway, and Catch Probability doesn't take ballpark into account. FWIW, JBJ is slower than the major league average CF. Seems reasonable that with no wall, a fast CF glides over and makes that play a little less than 50% of the time. They did update Catch Probability for 2018 to include the difficulty of catches made within 8 feet of an outfield wall. Looked possible that JBJ's catch was just outside that range - and fell through the cracks, so to speak. In the comments they are pointing out that the hang time and distance covered equates to a 5.8% chance in Statcasts own Rates.

Berrios can be nasty sometimes. What a good looking strikeout to Leon.

Hopefully Eovaldi goes 7 strong innings to give the bullpen a rest.

Yeah, they're using him as we thought they might a few years back, as a super-utility guy who has catching as his primary skill but with a bag of tricks that includes quite a few other positions. Those include the outfield, and first and third base. The guy is extremely athletic and he showed it.

If he had been a little quicker setting up, he would have thrown the runner out from the grass behind shortstop.

The home plate umpire is horrible and his demeanor is unprofessional. Stop making every check swing call and let your fellow umpires help you out. It has been bad for both teams.

Sano... what is it Eckersley says, a pair of shoes? That was a killer pitch and he probably thought he was going to get hit in the knees.

This feels like one of those games whee, if the Sox don't score any more, the Twins will keep fighting and Eovaldi probably won't finish. But if they find a way to tack on a few more runs the Twins will probably fold and he might get a CG.

Eovaldi was a brilliant pickup. Probably the best pitcher the Sox could get all deadline value wise all around. I hope they resign him. Agreed. He fits multiple roles at different points, Be it SP depth or postseason bullpen big velo. He’s a breakout candidate with clear changes to approach that coincide with better results, and who probably won’t be especially expensive or require a particularly long deal. He evens out the handedness of the rotation, too. Hopefully winning is something he enjoys and wants more of.

Eovaldi’s allowed 60 baserunners in 64 innings so far this year. He’s always had good control, but gave up a lot of hits. So here’s the question: is the HR problem just noise? What if he’s really more like an 11% instead of 16% HR/FB guy now? What if he’s secretly the #2 this team needs?
