Eovaldi was scheduled to pitch the day we traded for him. He hadn't pitched since the 20th. Rest at 82 pitches shouldn't be a factor. Cora probably got the memo about multiple times through the order.

He had those 8/9-pitch innings so a Maddux was entirely feasible. My guess is they’re going on the historical 3rd-time penalty and wanted him out on a high note in a close game. That said, with all the time off and being post-TJ, I’m OK with easing him back in and *carefully* testing the hypothesis that his 3rd+-time penalty might be a thing of the past. I do think that Cora was being overly conservative...at least give him a shot at the 8th. I’m just happy the guy looks like he could be a coup of an addition. He’s better than Happ, for sure, and the cost was arguably less, at basically no salary cost either. Just a terrific ninja move by Dombrowski.

Folks, enjoy - we are witnessing a historically good baseball team. They win - they are fun to watch - they are likable.
Very, very cool indeed!

Yankees won to stay even but time's a wastin' for them.
Happ with a decent start 6 innings 1 R but only 2K's.

Sano... what is it Eckersley says, a pair of shoes? That was a killer pitch and he probably thought he was going to get hit in the knees. What he is saying is that there is no batter, pitch was so good nobody had a chance. I was talking to someone the other day when he said it. I love it, one of my Eck favorites.

Great Win!
Here’s hoping Eovaldi has the same results next weekend.

A win with JBJ batting 5th...Outstanding! Since a little more than a month ago - Jun 24 to be exact and not counting this game - Bradley is at .302/.371/.558. While the lousy BABIP and all the shifts he was hitting into early in the season got him off to a very slow start, he's definitely picked it up. So your right, his batting 5th is a good idea.

Should we thank defacto hitting coach JD Martinez?

I like Vasquez, but his injury might really help Swihart. He’s starting to look good at the plate. I hope the Sox figure out how to use him long term.

If the Sox keep up this pace, and win 112 games it will be next to impossible for the Yankees to catch them.

I had a feeling that they were over. They were way too close if they weren't. Time to buy and spend money.

Considering the crappy lineup the Sox has today, him 5th was about as good as you could do. It’s too bad Devers got hurt again. I kind of wish they could DL Moreland and just fully rest him. He’s been so valuable this year, almost unexpectedly, that him reverting back to his less productive self would really shorten this lineup. Need him.

Man Swihart is looking better and better! In his first 60 something PAs he was flashing signs of being a good hitter by drawing walks and going the other way (although soft flyballs) and he was whiffing his fair share too but he looked to me just rusty and playing time was gonna take care of that and he'll blossom into the hitter he was supposed to be. Defense ain't bad too! After all he went through, it's neat seeing him having success.

Did we ever get a good explanation for why Swihart never made it into the Marwin Gonzalez type super-utility role Cora talked about in spring training? It looks like there was a productive and useful player there all along and the Sox were only hurting themselves by burying him on the bench as long as they did...who knew? (Other than just about everyone here, of course.)

For those with Twitter, this tweet had some interesting comments:
Phil Miller @millerstrib Follow Follow @millerstrib
Logan Morrison said ump Doug Eddings' demeanor behind plate was unnecessarily confrontational. Got angry when Jose Berrios asked where a ball-four was. "A 'how dare you question my authority' type deal," Morrison said. "His reaction [to Berrios] was not warranted." . . . One of the comments (the *** are mine):
Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats Following Following @redsoxstats More Park audio only: Holt: "goddammit" Ump: "right at your f***ing knees" Holt: "you don't f***ing talk to me like that, do your job"

Go back and look at how much time Lin spent on the bench before he got ABs the first three times he was called up.
