I never said he wasn’t trying to win but they made some moves in years past that were kind of all in type moves. This year is more compete within this more restrictive budget with the eye on really blowing it out next year. They could have signed Clowney and made trades to use that cap space. We've also seen them trade guys like Seymour and Jones which was clearly long-term type moves, not all in type moves. It always has gone both ways with Bill. The fact that it was Basically Clowney who isn't a good fit kinda makes my point no? How many big trades have we seen in the the last few months? I just don't see it. There was no big time TE or WR sitting there or other big time players at positions of need. I guess my point wasn’t that they aren’t trying but the moves of the last few years has been calculated to set this year up as a sort of reset year. All the traded picks and signings that piled all the dead money on the cap - knowing last year was Brady’s last here. Bill knew this would be a regroup type year. Doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t try to win, but we can certainly see it.

No undrafted player made the team ending the streak. Which I think speaks volumes about the limited camp, no joint practices and no preseason games. It just didn't give the guys a chance to show their stuff. Glad Taylor made it and I'm glad they kept a ton of OL depth. Harris to 3 wk IR. Taylor to the 53. I think we can count that since it was a procedural move. Who's with me?!?!? If he's on the 53 at kickoff, it counts.

Cam Newton was just sitting there begging for a chance and proved it by signing a dirt cheap deal. That changes everything no? A year ago or heck almost any off-season you'd never predicted that would happen. Let's not also forget they got a league high four comp picks, two extra thirds and two sixths. I don't know if Bill had inside information or if just worked out this way, yet he nails depths for the opt out guys. Plus our 2019 draft class that I loved that we didn't get much out of last year, is starting to get better. I don't think Bill ever planned not to win, yet maybe with Stidham you could call it a learning year or retool year. Newton changes that though and even when everything goes wrong Bill still has created a team with good depth. Now it's younger depth, so we'll see what happens. Yet I'll take the 2020 TE group over 2019s group. I think our WRs will be better. I think we go early 2000s, run the ball, play great D and have Newton make some plays. I'll wait till I see them play to make predictions, yet I feel damn good about this team. Bill the GM shows why he's also a HOF GM, not just coach. Going to predict Newton is like Moss and Corey Dillion.

Going to predict Newton is like Moss and Corey Dillion. I still think it’s a retooling year of sorts since they aren’t operating off of a full financial arsenal. It’s ebbs and flows of the cap. They clearly used this year as a way to fix themselves financially going forward. Bill is always going to try and win with what he’s got and he’s built a team that if things break right can go to the SB. Keep it in context of the Patriots. By their standards not the Jaguars standards. I don’t know if I like the Randy Moss - Corey Dillon comparisons... they killed it for the first year then signed extensions and didn’t live up to them. So let’s go with them and change the outcome. I’ll talk about the recent drafts in a separate post.

Last 2 drafts are promising but still very suspect.
This year draft has a lot of buzz around it. Duggar was super impressive early. Jennings and Uche got a lot of positive reviews and better play well because they have little else at LB. The tight ends, Asiasi and Keane, have positive press as well. But they are rookies and other than Duggar TE and LB are hard to have high impact in this defense as a rookie. Hopefully they are at least solid.
Last years class, we will see. Harry is key; he needs to break out. Harris better not get buried because of injury again and they need Wino to step up. Was good for a rookie last year - now he just needs to be good. Froholdt looks like a player but hopefully he doesn’t see the field and JoJuan seems like a matchup piece which is valuable but without injury he’s not playing much.
Harry, Harris, Asiasi and Keane need to be focused on a really good offense going forward and Wino, Uche, Jennings and Duggar/Williams need to be fixtures on a really good defense going forward or these drafts won’t be what we were looking for.

Brady's dead money and Newton's cap hit is 7 million less than Brady's cap hit last year. The difference basically equals Browns and Bennett's dead money. You can certainly debate the QBs, yet Newton's crazy team friendly deal offsets our dead money 100%. Which is what I mean when I say he changed things. Unless you're starting Stidham next year or another rookie you won't have tons of more money. My god look what average QBs get paid.
I'm talking those guys first year, not long-term.

www.tmz.com/2020/09/09/aqib-talib-retires-nfl-new-england-patriots-offer/Made 6 million offer to cover TEs. So Bill was willing to spend money for the right players. At the same time it's horrible news for our 2nd year CB. It was a head scratching pick to begin with and that's horrible. You shouldn't want to sign a guy when you have a 2nd year player you thought had first round talent.

If we believe Talib. Would have to have been pretty late in the off-season for that offer to even be possible.
