Ok, independent of other things: he does not look good. And… when the Sox signed Story, I took that to mean they think he is not very good either. It is interesting that in all the X scenarios people have discussed, there has been no push for Story back to SS and Downs to 2b. If they resign X, or if they sign a different SS, Downs is done in Boston. And that seems likely to me. They'd still need a utility infielder, and if that's what Downs projects to it's Arroyo blocking him, not Story and Xander.
Relatedly, I've wondered if Arroyo might be the guy Bloom moves this offseason in his annual gambit to grab a couple mid-tier prospects via trade...
It's an interesting thought on Arroyo, I hadn't really thought of what his value may be to a team looking for a potential cheap starting caliber 2nd baseman which I think Arroyo can be health permitting. Gigantic if but if somehow Arroyo stayed healthy for a full year and played 140ish games he probably could be a top 10 2nd baseman. It just takes one team to think he can somehow stay healthy and they probably could fetch a decent enough package back for him. Edit: on second thought after checking out the 2nd base WAR leaders on Fangraphs I'm not so sure top 10 would be likely. I think somewhere around 15 would be more likely which obviously is about league average or so which still could have some value to a team not looking to spend big bucks on 2nd baseman.

I wonder, too. It is an interesting question.

Maybe I'm crazy yet I'd try Downs at CF and Duran at 2B. Do you want Downs in CF to have a more useful utility player?

At one time it was thought he could play both equally as good. Yet maybe that has changed. If he could become average or around that at SS and CF, with his power the bar for his bat goes down, compared to 2B. It's also a bigger need long-term with a bigger opening especially if they resign Bogaerts.
