Per Ian, the list of players who didn't play:
Bryan Mata Hudson Potts Connor Wong (all three probably got enough reps at ATS, although Jeisson Rosario did play) Kole Cottam (same but at Battle of the Bourbon Trail) Alex Erro (learning a new position) Kutter Crawford (TJ rehab) Jacinto Arredondo Jorge Rodriguez Chase Shugart Jacob Wallace Thad Ward Ryan Zeferjahn Pedro Castellanos

From Gammo in The Athletic: theathletic.com/2202331/2020/11/18/gammons-state-of-pitching-2021-red-sox-rays-yankees/The Red Sox believe that Byan Mata — who is 21 and was up to 99 in Pawtucket — will be up by July, as will Connor Seabold, who came with Pivetta. Darwinzon Hernández may be able to move from the bullpen to starting during the season, and that by the end of a normal 2021 season, right-hander Thad Ward, left-handers Chris Murphy and Jay Groome and right-handed swingman Andrew Politi are on the horizon.
“This was the best collection of young arms we’ve had in the Instructional League in a long time,” says one Red Sox executive. “Of course we hope we get Noah Song back from his Naval obligation, but there were some really eye-popping kids in Florida — Bradley Blalock, Dylan Spacke, Brendan Cellucci, Jeremy Wu-Yelland, Aldo Ramirez…”
Chaim Bloom didn’t come to Boston with the same mandate Dave Dombrowski had when he arrived and did what he was asked, got Price, Sale and Craig Kimbrel at considerable cost and won a World Series. Bloom is doing what they intended when they thought they hired Billy Beane in 2002 and instead got in Theo Epstein — someone to build a supply system that is consistently in contention. Friedman is Bloom’s mentor. Watching Boston’s Alternate Site team on the Pawtucket fields, when Mata, Groome, Pivetta and Seabold weren’t starting, they had a redevelopment program for pitchers who, in the horse racing vernacular, fit the if-they-did-it-once-they-can-do-it-again category. Left-hander Stephen Gonsalves, once a Twins prize, now 26, was up to 96-97 mph with a nasty breaking ball at the end that has the team dreaming of a 2021 role. If there is a normal spring training, Robert Stock, Seth Blair and slider-master Caleb Simpson will have opportunities to mirror the Tampa bullpen delegation.

Wasn't some of the concern with him effort in his delivery? Because that was a pretty easy looking 94

That is an awesome picture. I will bask in its rose-colored beauty, because it would be great to produce legit pitching for once. Reality will eventually beat me down, but for now the Sox have three to five #2/3 starters in-house.

I should think it would have been a known that the best pitching prospects in years at the Fall Instrux would happen, they didn't have a system full of tired arms to work with. The other hand says it looks visually like our pitching depth has vastly improved. I am glad to see Stephen Gonsalves get some ink.

For whatever reason, I latched on to him as one of my favorite guys in the system to keep an eye on as he climbs the ladder. That he impressed the Sox executive quoted here makes me wish even more that it was already time for a normal spring. Don’t sleep on this prospect. Anybody wants on his bandwagon, I’ll drive.

I don't know how everyone else is feeling, but I for one am dying for an updated Dylan Spacke scouting report.

Wouldn't that pretty much have to be provided by the Red Sox if we are talking this year ? This is an honest question, but do people have me blocked or something? I literally have posted tweets with a very positive Aldo Ramirez scouting report in here and mentioned we were going to have reports from instructs (which could and will include Dylan Spacke). I'm not complaining, but rather it's an honest question: what am I/are we not doing such that it's not clear we have reports on these guys from Instructs? I want to better make stuff like that clear in the future. At any rate, first News Page post is coming tomorrow. Good stuff in there, including things that may surprise you.

Chris, it is precisely because of information from you and the site that I am enthusiastic about Ramirez. I have never seen him play and rely almost solely on reports I get from SP community.

As you'll all hear in the podcast dropping today, Ian and I, at least, now think they'll protect Bazardo based on how he looked. I think they'll still protect Groome, but man, was this report extremely concerning. A good reminder not to assume someone's going to come back from TJ totally fine.

Not all reports are going to be positive and you have to take the bad with the good. The bigger picture says we had a lot more positive development than negative. That works for me.

I'm not even sure that's true, but mostly in the sense that I'm not sure how much tangible development occurs in 5.5 weeks. I think there were few standouts based on reports we got (and keep in mind there are several more of these coming - we got data on basically everyone who played, which is like 49 guys), but if you look at our rankings, just 3 of the current top 10 played, and just 9 of the top 20. That's of course going to mean that the number of glowing reports will be limited.

Although I do seriously miss seeing the games, I'm not as convinced as most that it's a serious crimp on player development. Yes, a lot of players didn't play but I am guessing they weren't sitting around eating bonbons while in Florida. I actually welcome longer stints with rotating into and out of teams who are actually playing. I think it's an advancement. Tougher to evaluate but an advancement nonetheless. It will take years before we will be able to evaluate the changes that are about to happen.

As far as the year goes in terms of prospects, for me, Casas, Houck, Duran, Mata & apparently Jiminez all made major strides. Adding Downs, Seabold, Grullon, Rosario, Potts & Wallace was icing on the cake.

Were you talking about the year or the camp? I thought you meant the latter and that's what I was referring to.

Kinda of alarming that groome could show up stacked after an injury and then just not a few months later. I know I can loose it quick but for such a young guy. And if that curveball doesn’t come back....I mean that was his plus plus pitch.... Feels like he needs a Chris Sale back again, some sorta mentor

Great updates here...was looking forward to this one. Fingers crossed they can take their time developing Blaze and that he can develop a good enough hit tool over time to get to his power.
