Well he'd lose $250,000 he's currently earning and a chance at another $250,000. Yet we haven't been talking about Stidham just because he's young, it's because Newton hasn't been good. He's had his moments, yet has 5 TD passes and 10 interceptions in 13 games. You'd have a hard time convincing me he deserves to play 90% of the plays. I don't really care, it's $500,000 so whatever. Yet I don't think it's really going to matter to free agents, I don't think most would expect that if they played so bad. It's not just our weapons either, Newton has skipped more passes this year than I remember Bledsoe and Brady doing their entire careers. His mechanics come and go, along with the fact he no longer has an elite arm. He's more accurate in the middle of the field than he is with short passes. Heck even the ones people catch are always off, he's never leading the guy allowing him to get YAC totals. Which is a massive problem with this team. Yet if $500,000 is an issue, pay the guy so you can see what Stidham can do. I applaud the effort, he's just not a fit in our offense.

You're going to hate when he re-signs here.

You're going to hate when he re-signs here. That's your position? I can understand Bill being loyal in a given season to a guy he respects. What have we've seen that says he should be resigned?

It was mostly a tongue-in-cheek statement but based on some real concepts. To be clear, I do NOT think he's the answer and (as I've stated before) I think Stidham still has a chance to be. However, IF Belichek disagrees:
1. The next veteran QB is a bridge. Nothing more. 2. Given #1 above, is it better to get a guy who not only doesn't move the needle but needs time to learn the system and work with the skill guys (despite a need for a significant upgrade, you gotta believe 2-3 WR/TEs will still be part of the offense). 3. I would assume anyone WE would want would be guys who had good years (meaning they'd be looking to make big money) compared to a guy who recognized that he had a bad year. While he will cost more than he did this year it's probably going to be right in line with the other "meh" candidates.
Again, it was mostly a joke. That being said, any reality becomes a lot easier to adjust to if you let go of the idea that NE will be any good next year. So if he's willing to come back and compete with Stidham and/or anyone else they might draft, it's mostly 6 of one . . .
EDIT - so it's not that I would want it but that it wouldn't surprise me.

It’s entirely possible he resigns here - i wouldn’t co-sign it but again I’m with Tex and wouldn’t be surprised.

If they draft a guy like Trey Lance or Desmond Ridder I will almost guarantee Newton will be back. The offense would be able to transition seamlessly to the younger, more dynamic player midway through the season or whenever Bill feels he gives them a better chance to win

The one veteran I’d be excited about would be Stafford. He’s been playing for a shit organization but the guy is good.

I like Derek Carr too. At least more than other possible established options

Kind of on topic - how bad is Josh Rosen? He was just picked off of someone's practice squad. Pats couldn't find a roster spot for 2 games to take a look at him? If they have any faith in Stidham then I don’t see the point.

DMac said he plans on playing next year so I think we can take the retirement talk off the table.

Did some schedule sleuthing - not hard core - but if the Patriots lose out (and make someone’s prediction here look genius) there’s maybe a path to a top 10 pick as well. A couple of the 5 win teams play each other and others play either games they should win or very winnable ones.
For instance:
Denver finishes against the Chargers and Raiders
Dallas the Eagles and Giants (also works with giants winning the last game letting them both finish with 6 - maybe we have a tiebreaker against one or both? Although that’s though with the NFC East schedule.
The 9ers beat us so idk how that affects draft position but they could beat the Cardinals this weekend or maybe Seattle last week.
The Vikings (6wins) play the lions the last week and the Vikings right now are slated to pick ahead of us so that win could jump the draft slot.
It’s even possible Houston wins the last 2 and Miami drafts behind the Pats...
Gonna be hard to lose to the Jets tho

Right now nothing would make me happier than this team finishing 6-10. Sometimes losing is the right play.

You HAVE to give Stidham some run. The passing game currently doesn't exist. I think they should prep him as starter and let him play 2 full games. Let him make and try to overcome mistakes. I guess they have already seen enough (or seen not enough) from Stidham

I am beginning to think that maybe given the incentives in Cams contract in which only 550K is guaranteed and the playing time incentives are the bulk of the contract. BB ,on a handshake, promised him that he would earn that money by playing him. Either Stidham is not good or BB made that deal with Cam and is living up to that promise. Nothing else makes any sense based on how Cam has played and the circumstances.

Draft choice game tonight. And next week. Hopefully the Jets who are secure at the 2 spot will win a 3rd straight after a Patriots loss tonight. There’s going to be a big difference between losing out and picking up another win or (gulp 2).

The only reason BB isn't starting Stidham tonight is because the fans want him to and he'll be darned if the fans/media tell him what to do.
Maybe Cam gives them a better chance to lose and help his draft order. It's impossible to know what he's thinking even when he tells you.

I don’t think this is true. Fans and media have been saying this for over a month now. I think there’s multiple plausible explanations - could be a combination of them too (and maybe more that I have not thought about):
The number is just for purposes of breaking things up - not a ranking
1. Bill is leaving open the possibility of bringing Cam back next year.
2. They don’t have much, if any faith in Stidham
3. Loyalty and setting an example. Maybe Cam has been such a good soldier and teammate that Bill wants to reward that. Maybe Cam is such a leader in the locker room that the team wants him as the starter and Bill thinks it’s best for the franchise that this work ethic and leadership and accountability is rewarded.
