Alex Speier reporting it's actually 3 finalists, and that Mendoza isn't one of them. I don't think it's that he doesn't want to be reminded of 2018. Who cares? I think it's more likely that he is uncomfortable with Cora for the reasons people here aren't, with a bit of wanting to build his own club probably thrown in. BUT, that said, we're all speculating. I mean, look, having on your ledger "was involved in multiple investigations that cost my employers valuable resources and led to firings" is a pretty big mark in the "cons" column, right? I'd still take Cora 10 out of 10 times. Players love the guy and he's a proven winner. I would too, but I think this is where fans get a little disillusioned with the process. These aren't just names on a computer screen, this is a guy Bloom is going to have in the building for the foreseeable future and trust with the future of his team, and while we personally don't care much about the cheating stuff (at least most of us), the person that's actually hiring him does, because they take on the risk. It's the same thing with free agents. It's easy for me to say they should sign Bauer, Springer, Realmuto, and trade for Lindor, and just pay the tax. Because it's not my money. At the end of the day sometimes I think we forget that these are real human beings involved in these decisions and they're very often not black and white.

If I'm Bloom, part of my process would be talk to a lot of the players (especially the younger ones and the Latinos) about Cora. That would take time.

If I'm Bloom I want my guy and not having the narrative be about Cora all off season. Yet that's just me.

I feel like every minute that passes makes it less likely it will be Cora. Cora is the guy I'd like to see for a number of reason. One of them is I think he will get the best out of Devers. My guess is it's going to be Fuld. Among other things Fuld is known to Bloom and heavily involved in analytics. Of course they could hire both and have Cora as manager as long as Cora was agreeable to cede in game decision making to the electronic brains.

I also lived through the steroid era where everyone more or less was on something. What Cora did was bad but he also did get a raw deal considering the players didn't receive any punishment and they were just as guilty.

LOL, not yet at two. McCaffrey and Speier both more or less confirming.
Jon Heymanb@JonHeyman · 12h As noted on @mlbnetwork now Red Sox began paring their final 5 of Fuld, Cora, Rowson, Kelly and Mendoza so a decision should come soon. Belief is it’ll likely come down to Fuld and Cora with Fuld having a very real chance. It’s GM Chaim Bloom’s call and he has strong tie to Fuld.

Fuld coming in as bench coach? The FO has already "dictated" a fair bit of the coaching staff, and I feel like Roenicki was from on high to begin with as an "experienced manager" consigliere.

Amazing news. Cora is the guy for this team for sure. Will be great to have him back on board.

I'm excited! I don't know about the pitching, but this will be a key move to help make the Sox one of the best hitting teams in baseball again. Verdugo was the team's MVP last season. Now imagine what he could be with Cora's coaching. Dever was coming back to form at the end on the season. Now with some adjustments from Cora, we might see 2019 Devers.

I think Fuld will be a good manager for somebody and probably could have been for the Red Sox, but I think Cora is the right guy for the Red Sox organization.
It sounds like his fingerprints were all over the organization and if not for his suspension he might have projected as one of those rare guys who can last between 5 - 12 as a Red Sox manager - he might now anyways.
I hope Bloom is totally at peace with his hire and I hope that Cora sincerely apologizes for his role in the Astros fiasco. If they are and they do, then this can work well.
I would think Cora would work better with Bloom (more like minded I would think) than he would with Dombrowski, but Dombrowski gave Cora his autonomy. I would think Bloom would do likewise, but hopefully they're both of similar minds enough where it won't be an issue and there can be complete faith on the part of Bloom to trust Cora with decisions and for Cora to be on the same page with Bloom.
I feel like this is great news going forward.

This is a nice litmus test for how people feel about "moral relativism"... Looks like the Sox have gone with the SEC Football approach. I think I disapprove. This kind of thing is how franchises become universally reviled by fans of other teams.

This kind of thing is how franchises become universally reviled by fans of other teams. If Cora had the same kind of blatant thing going on as manager with the Red Sox that he did being on the Astros, I wouldn't have hoped he would be rehired. As a manager he had more power on Boston than he did with Houston. He didn't do the same thing in Boston as he did in Houston. If I take Manfred's findings at face value (it's fair to debate that), then it sounds like Cora was uninvolved in the Red Sox 2018 infraction, so I take it he managed the Red Sox above board in a different culture than he did with Houston, that he's not with the Red Sox, in a different organization, that he was in Houston. You can say, "Well, it still doesn't change what he did", and I can respect that take. I just think that won't be an issue with the Red Sox, which is why it doesn't bother me that he's back.

meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Congrats to Alex. He paid his penalty (deserved or not). I applaud Bloom and the organization for being fair minded in that regard.

I'm so, so incredibly happy with this. Like I said, this move would rekindle my love for this organization in a huge way. I felt like sh*t since they traded Mookie, fair or not. But bringing Cora back is such a wholesome move. Dude is a winner, got shafted in the Astros incident that could have branded him for life and now he gets a second chance with the franchise he brought so much joy to, first as a player and then as a manager. FO didn't have to make this move, they didn't owe anything to Alex. But it feels so good that they did.
One of the most likable guys ever involved with the sport and the manager to the best Red Sox team ever. Welcome back king, stay longer this time.

Huzzah!!! Absolutely fantastic news!!!! Alex is the perfect manager for this team> I don't know how it could have gone otherwise. He sees flaws in players stances and is a stickler of staying in the zone on pitches. I was totally despondent that he was let go. I guess we can go forward with pride now. Go Sox!!!
