Amazing insight as always from Speier on the process of reghiring Cora ($ but I could see it free since I didn't hit an article limit or something) If you don't mind, would you please sum up some of the interesting things you learned in that Speier article that perhaps wasn't very common knowledge? As I'm sure you agree, Speier is like no other writer covering the Red Sox beat. I unfortunately long ago hit the article limit so I can't see the article. Much appreciated. Thanks.

A few notes: The call was 100% Bloom's. Ownership said they would welcome Cora back but would welcome a new start and understood both.
Bloom's initial instinct was new start but he wanted to consider Cora thoroughly along with the other candidates.
Cora wasn't sure he wanted to go back to baseball this season or wait until '22 or '23, but he knew he loves Boston and wanted to be considered if/when the manager position opened up.
O'Halloran and Bloom met with Cora in an airplane hanger in Puerto Rico for 5 hours in blistering heat in a meeting all three described as emotional and exhausting. Cora poured our everything and the FO asked hard questions.
In addition to both sign stealing scandals, Cora needed to be accountable for the team's 2019 performance and speak to what he learned. It was still not a clear decision afterward.
Cora was encouraged after the meeting that he was really in it and was excited about the possibility.
All of the FO were comfortable with all 3 final candidates and Bloom made the final call. The timing of the announcement was just when the process reached its end and not "buried" in the election results.
Lots more details within about the other interviews as well.

I didn't watch the press conference so perhaps the wording above was someone else's I know its warmer in Puerto Rico but would you categorize the weather in November (post World Series) as blistering heat?.......or perhaps the meeting actually took place mid-summer?? Looks like the high for the first week following the World Series was 88F www.timeanddate.com/weather/puerto-rico/san-juan/historic

Though I'm just a dude on the internet 😅

True. Could be hot. Blistering to me just sounds more than hot..... Another curious point is why meet in an un-airconditioned airplane hanger unless you didn't want to be seen?

It was described as a 90 degree swelter and contrasted with the snow the Sox personnel left behind in Boston. Thanks for sharing. Was there any tidbits that stood out to you regarding the other candidates the Sox interviewed? I would think Fuld was the most interesting of them. Now I'm also curious who Cora will appoint to be his bench coach. I wouldn't think Roenicke would want to necessarily go back to that. I'm also curious about what Cora learned from the 2019 season. It seemed like the Sox pitching staff wasn't really prepared going into that season and the team never seemed to play with any real urgency. It was kind of like they were hung over from the previous year. The more clinical way of looking at it is that the team that had everything break right for them in 2018 had just about everything break wrong for them in 2019. The starting rotation fell apart, particularly with Sale not himself, and perhaps Eovaldi paying the price for pushing it in Oct 2018.

88-99 degree heat in a hanger on tarmac is really hot. Add in Caribbean humidity = really, really sweaty hot and miserable. This would even be hot at the beach, and unlike a breezy beach, hangars hold heat. Add in lack of time to acclimate from the cold and snow and I absolutely trust their timeline and misery-level. Sounds like Bloom worked scrupulously to make his decision.

And yes, I remember disappointment that ST in 2019 never got the team prepared to compete on day one due to a WS hangover That was on Cora, and he knows it. But also, as you remembered, everything did go wrong. Ying and yang those two years.

So in addition to Venable hiring, Tek is now officially a coach on the MLB staff, Vazquez gets a job, and Walker moved from Asst. Pitching Coach to the Bullpen Coach job, where I presume he'll do mostly the same thing except for in-game.

Jennings reported that Varitek, Walker, and Vazquez are all doing the same thing as last year, just with new titles.
