NFL contracts... never what they seem.

He could but the last 2 years have shown a pretty good decline in his production from his peak. So having a competent tight end versus nothing is a huge upgrade but he’s been a borderline number 1

It’s possible, I’d have to look deeper into the numbers but they dropped at a higher rate than his snap count. I’d take him in a heartbeat at the right price.

I'm not Vikings fan so this is just by the stats, it looks like they went to a two TE set. About the same number of targets to TEs for the year, just split between the two TEs. I don't think you get that 2016 version, yet 500 to 600 yards and a bunch of TDs seems likely.
The only problem is half the league is likely going to be in on him. Yet adding Rudolph and Van Noy would be one hell of a start to free agency.
Interesting note, people think this is just the start of cuts like this.

Someone quoted an agent who said that next week is "going to be a massacre" (re: Cuts)

What can you get for Gilmore on a one year 7.3 million deal when teams have no money? There's been so much talk about trading him, you have to consider what that trade would look like.

I'd take a 3rd rounder for Gilmore. We're already strong in CB's and Safeties. Load up on draft choices and sign some key free agents. With a decent QB we could be darn good next year. Just have to wait for all those free agents to hit.

They actually could use one with JMac being a free agent, JC restricted and Gilmore in his last year.

By the way I’m all in on Mac Jones at 15 if he’s still there.

Throw Delanie Walker on the veteran TE list. He’s playing in 2021. Pats were rumored to have a little interest in him last offseason but he didn’t play due to covid + healing up injuries
He would be a bargain bin type signing

I'd hate just a 3rd, more like a 2nd and 5th, or a young player at a need position like DT, WR or TE.
I don't think Jason is going anywhere and you do have Williams. Are we done with Williams?

I think Williams best bet is as a situational player - hard to see him as a regular corner... maybe a safety? I honestly am not sure.

I want to give Williams a chance at being the #3 CB. Otherwise that was a disaster of a pick given they traded up for him and Bill said they had a first round grade on him. Time for that pick to pay off.

Reports are Jimmy G is the Patriots plan A at QB and are going to make a strong push for him.

www.si.com/nfl/draft/.amp/mocks/monday-2021-nfl-mock-draft-7-rounds-trades-free-agency-predictionsSome crazy crap in this, yet if you're trading Gilmore getting Jimmy is about as good as it gets. I'd certainly hope they add on like three years, drive his cost down a little this year, yet not tons of guaranteed money. Some of the other moves make some sense, yet not really as Samuel isn't the type of WR we really need. You go Payne over Parsons, it makes some sense. Yet take the more ready impactful player that has a lower bust rate. I like the center and guard players, yet it's literally a draft of replacing players they have us losing in free agency. Wise, Thuney and Andrews. Not a big fan of this approach. I do like Max Milne WR 4th round, yet you need more! You will never develop a great WR core acting like that. Given Jimmy's injury history you pass on Trask and he drops to the 4th round? You'd have to feel Stidham is ready to step in, yet given last year that seems foolish.

Pats to trade back for Trent Brown, who will be on a 1 year $11m deal.
He seemed a little overrated to me while here so it surprises me. Guessing Thuney is gone and Wynn will be in the mix at LG or RT depending on where Onwenu fits best.

His salary is too high for him.

Not sure about overrated maybe you are right but the Pats won that SB with an O that was ground and pound. Put Brown and 350 lb Onwenu beside each other and I can see some line of scrimmage domination. That is one way to overcome the lack of talent at WR and TE. Pats could have the #1 Oline next year.

Cannon is all but gone without a major contract restructure.

They could go a number of different ways:
Brown/Wynn/Andrews(FA)/Mason/Onwenu Brown/Onwenu/Andrews(FA)/Mason/Wynn Wynn/Onwenu/Andrews(FA)/Mason/Brown
The last 1 might be best but it's also possible that Brown agreed to this restructure based on the fact that he'd be LT and heading back to FA next year as such.

Looks like it's 2022 picks (Pats get a 7th and give a 5th) per Rapsheet.

I'm just wary of the guys who had one good year and leave the Pats in FA for big dollars. Hopefully the team can get the best out of him again (a la Jamie Collins). The deal is up to $11m so I'm guessing there are snap and game incentives if it's not working. "Fits the system, good enough, and at a reasonable price" is probably fine with as many holes as this team has. As noted by Field Yates, the Pats will be in line to get another comp pick if Brown succeeds and leaves again.
