Patriots 2021 Offseason Thread

Post by rjp313jr on Mar 20, 2021 7:06:05 GMT -5
So I'm hoping someone who understands this stuff better can confirm for me: Seeing the substantial increases in cap hits in 2022 relative to 2021....it seems like we'll be able to absorb this through a combo of 1) an anticipated increase in salary cap for 2022, and 2) some degree of contract restructuring for players under contract. Is that correct? That said, I imagine even with those factors accounted for that we'll still likely not have as much financial flexibility next offseason right? Correct, there will be restructures and or cuts. But the increase in cap will help that as well. They also have some big contracts coming off the books that will come with lower cap hits if redone. For what it’s worth, Miguel (Pats Cap expert) keeps saying he sees no reason to be concerned about Patriots future cap space in 2022, 2023 and 2024... he’s an expert in that area so there should be comfort there

Yeah I think I saw 2/6.5 total guaranteed with a possibility of being 4/19
That’s a preposterously team friendly contract to the point where I almost want them to tear it up and give him a better one lol

I was doing a depth chart to see where they were at and there are basically no roster spots left only a few roster spots left not accounting for draft picks. A trade up the board and/or trading or cutting of surprise players is kind of inevitable. Below is my list of 48 guys who seem like 53 man roster locks assuming healthy (which never happens). I stared the special teams guys. They will probably add a rookie QB (maybe Stidham shouldn’t be a lock?). They need an 8th OL (Cajuste is a possibility but with Herron, you may want a guy who can play guard even tho you have Karras). I say you need another interior defensive lineman... maybe they get Guy back, and Cowart is available - spot in the draft works too. I think targeting an inside linebacker or young corner in the draft makes sense too. I think Keene will be the fullback this year - just no room to carry one in my opinion. QB (2) Newton Stidham RB (4) Harris Michel *Bolden Taylor TE/FB (4) Henry Smith Asiasi Keene WR (7) Agholor Edelman Bourne Meyers Harry *Gunner *Slater OL (7) Wynn Onwenu Andrews Mason Brown Karras Herron DL (3) Godchaux Wise Anderson Edge (4) Judon KVN Winovich Uche Linebacker (4) Hightower Bentley Jennings *King Corner (6) Gilmore Jackson Jones Mills Williams *Bethel Safety (4) McCourty Duggar Phillips *Davis Specialists (3) Cardona Folk Bailey I was thinking the same thing, not many roster spots left. If the 2020 draft class was as good as it seems and they progress it doesn't leave much room for 2021 picks. If we are right does that mean BB consolidates picks to move up or push to next year, maybe a bit of both. Is this considered a strong draft? I am thinking they will come away with a QB with their #15, Mac Jones should be there at 15. Love this offseason so far.

It’s not considered strong on the defensive side but it’s also thought of as a difficult draft due to the COVID season and lack of workouts. Hard to scout.

This was a great point by Bedard: www.bostonsportsjournal.com/2021/03/21/nfl-notebook-cam-newton-winds-patriots-qb-pressure-will-much-work/You can say the Patriots should adjust and tailor their scheme to Newton. That’s fine and dandy, but at some point in time — probably several times — Newton is going to have to be a dropback passer and shred the opponent. You can’t do that rolling consistently. You can’t do that using playaction and read-option fakes. You just have to get into the shotgun, decode the defense and get the right target the ball. And this is by far Newton’s biggest weakness, and I’m not sure he can master it. In addition to hours spent working on his mechanics, Newton also needs to take hours each day working on the Patriots’ system. He should be moving into Brian Hoyer‘s house and paying him to tutor him. There’s that much work to be done. There will be much excitement and talk about what the Patriots can do with their weapons, how the two or three (with Devin Asiasi) tight ends – to say nothing of an athletic fullback like Dan Vitale or Dalton Keene — could be huge match up issues for defenses and those matchups will dictate what play the Patriots run. It makes sense in theory. Put safeties against the tight ends, the Patriots will run it down your throat. Put linebackers out there, look out for the passing game. That’s the way it worked here before. People are kind of forgetting that Brady orchestrated all that. Brady would see what the defense was doing, make the checks, move people around, and attack the opponent.

Kyle Fuller signed a 1/9.5m deal with Denver. There’s a pro-bowl corner 2 years younger than Gilmore. Yes, Gilmore is better, but he’s 2 years older which helps balance out the difference. Should help set Gilmore’s value for this year (he’s already set to earn 7.5m).
Also, kind of hints that there likely won’t be a robust offer for JC Jackson either.

Marcus Mariota scored a 33 on the Wonderlic test, same as Tom Brady. Cam Newton scored a 21, 20 is seen as the bare minimum to play QB. Jimmy was 29, Stidham was 27.
I've taken it, no practice, not even knowing the rules for a job interview just out of college and got a 20. If I knew you could skip questions and it was just about getting the most right it would have been much higher.
So you have to wonder if the most complicated offensive system in football is right for Newton. Mariota looks tailored made for our system, a more accurate QB that seems perfect for a dink and dunk offense.

He graduated college in 3 years with a 4.0 gpa and is very very accurate? I know the whole Alabama dominance thing and trying to scout their QB's is hard but a 77% completion rate is crazy even if you have the best talent. The one yr deal to Cam also points to a QB in the draft and I think it is time to go big rather than taking another flyer later on in the draft. Which I think is rather obvious.

I have no clue, Bill just doesn't look at things like we do. He could love Mac Jones, yet what does he rate him? The guy just stays true to his draft board. As Texas said earlier, don't be surprised to see him trade up for a non QB. It's why I want Mariota because I don't have faith Bill will do what many think he will. It wouldn't shock me if he targets Mills/Mond in the 3rd-5th rounds. He's all about picking guys at slots where the value makes sense. Go watch Mac Jones tape, it's unreal. Yet it's so crazy easy also. I have no way of decoding that tape. There was no real challenges, I love seeing what a QB does when challenged. I loved watching what Trask did when under fire against Bama and Georgia. You see his warts, yet you also see his Big Ben like traits. That crap matters because you'll always be under fire in the NFL. It's a good thing Bill is good friends with Nick Saban.

I would like Mariotta and a rookie and say goodbye to Stidham... i just don’t see a non clear starter veteran coming in at this point. Jimmy G or better I can see.

I did a mock draft. I had one other pick that was cut off Van Lanen OT Wisconsin. I traded for Indy 2022 3rd, and 2022 5ths from Denver and Washington. Traded back twice to get Mac Jones at the end of the round then back up to get Cosmi for a tackle of the future. I wasn’t planning to take a WR but Moore is too explosive to pass up there. I haven’t done a ton of research on this draft but this is what I did

I think there is a 0% chance Jones falls that far in real life but I’d sure as hell love the draft you had

I'm getting ready to do a mock and Aarons Banks is certainly a target for me. Figure you could always slide Onwenu back over to OT and impact guards go much lower in the draft.
I think Mac Jones range is really top 10 to top of the second round.

I've so focused on the Patriots signing Mariota because his options don't look great. I might have overlooked the most important one, the 49ers. So focused on the rumored Sam Darnold trade, I forgot he makes a ton of sense to the 49ers if they actually want to move on from Jimmy.

First Mock kinda of a Bill inspired one, yet he never attacks needs like I will.
15- Micah Parsons LB
46- Terrance Marshall Jr. WR
I trade 96 and 122 to trade up for Kyle Trask QB, yes using Brady pick on QB.
120- Tyler Shelvin DT
139- Aaron Banks G
177- Blake Haubeil K
188- Robert Hainsey OT
197- Drew Dalmen C
242- Isaiah Dunn CB
I'd love to see Danny Shelton back, instead of Shelvin I could focus on a pass rushing DT. Mariota or Jimmy could mean no QB, allowing you to focus on CB/FS. Yet given things currently I feel darn good about this mock. Parsons and Shelvin finish the D. Marshall is the big WR with massive upside we need, Trask gives you a young QB. Banks, Hainsey and Dalmen give you great OL depth, something Bill does every year. Haubeil had a groin injury last year, yet he's a big kicker with a powerful leg. Dunn is just the best CB left.

If the Pats feel really good about one of Trask/Mills/Mond/Newman (or really don't like Mac Jones and can't get into the Top 5), it sure makes life easier. But if they feel good about one of them they should still be aggressive and at least use a 2nd rounder, which still shortens the draft a lot. Missing that 3rd rounder for video taping actually stings.

From what I read on WEEI.com, it sounds like if the Pats can't get Jimmy G, then their hope is to trade up to get Justin Fields in the draft, that they are really, really high on him, so that's what they might wind up doing.

www.nfl.com/news/2021-nfl-draft-quarterback-team-fits-after-free-agency-frenzy?campaign=Twitter_nfl_cfbDaniel Jeremiah has the Pats moving up to 6/7 for Fields. I still think they'll need to get higher. Gosh, there are so many unknowns. Does Darnold get moved before the draft, and does the acquiring team consider him a starter (or 1b to in-house candidate)? Does Atlanta really draft a QB at 4 and hold on to Ryan, holding 2 QB pieces? Same for the 49ers (or WHEN do they move Jimmy G?). Do Miami/Philly/Detroit get into or out of the QB market? Outside the box thought: Could Gilmore become a trade piece for a young QB? Say, Jordan Love, Tua or Hurts? It's hard to think about because Gilmore isn't worth a QB on the surface but if those teams want to cash in on their 2nd choice QBs while they still have value... I think I'd rather have Hurts or Tua than Mac Jones, but they all have a huge range of outcomes. I'm not keen on Love. Much more likely is a Gilmore trade for a 2nd and the Pats trade two 2nds and a 1st to move up where they want in this draft, if that's how they want to play it. That at least keeps the draft cost in one season. I'd rather keep Gilly though.

Whether or not they'll get a QB or whether they even do it to get a guy that WE think they could get at 15, everything seems to scream trade up. Gotta believe that, whatever their board looks like, they could move up to the next "tier" of prospects and they have the ammo (draft picks) and motivation (not a lot of roster spots) to do so.

There’s a good argument to be made for a bad team to take a QB, but I’m going to mostly focus on why these teams shouldn’t: Jets - haven’t traded Darnold - never gave him a real chance. However, I fully expect them to take one. Miami - just drafted Tua high in the draft last year. It’s basically giving up on him already after a weird COVID year. However, last chance that are drafting this high so maybe they feel the need to cover their asses. Atlanta - they extended Ryan to create cap space. They need to try and compete - if it doesn’t work they’ll be drafting high again. I don’t think they take a QB. Definite trade back candidate. Cincy - not taking QB Philly - certainly could but I think they like Hurts and it make little sense to repeat the mistake with Wentz by using a top 6 pick on a QB - makes more sense to try and build around the young guy you have. Detroit - they wanted Goff they won’t use a top 7 pick on a QB before he even plays. Carolina - it’s hard for me to argue in favor of Teddy B and they’ve been rumored in on Watson - they’ll target a QB if they can get one they like. Denver - QB team. Dallas - no Giants - maybe, but I think they ride another year with Jones San Fran a possibly, but makes sense to add talent to a team that if healthy can compete. Chargers - no Vikings - doubtful - too much money tied up in Cousins.

I prefer going after Jimmy and Mariota. If reports are true and they love Fields then go get him. If you like Trask enough at 46, then do you trade up to 31/32 to get an extra year? I really do like Trask, yet he's the 6/7 QB in the class and I'd rate him late second/third round pick. I think he drops given his arm talent. Yet that's part of the appeal, targeting a skill set most teams don't want and getting him in my range.
