In his depth chart update, Jeff Howe (Athletic) still mentions NE interest in Mariota if he's released and says that the Pats are sure to draft a QB.

It's funny how many dominoes at QB are still left. Mariota, Darnold, Jimmy and Watson. I feel bad for Mariota, they are dragging this out killing his market. Waiting till Trubisky signed to try and force his hand.
If I was the Jets you keep Darnold, wait till you rebuild that team bore you throw a rookie QB in.
This crap with Watson is just getting worse. At best it's a crazy bad look for him. I don't get it with these athletes, they should have tons of women throwing themselves at them.

FWIW, Corey Davis just said he signed with NYJ with the understanding that Darnold is the guy.

RapSheet reporting Mariota has restructured his deal. While my first reaction was that it could lead to a trade, Rap says ". . . he recently made the call to stick around"
EDIT - Of course, that could just be LV telling him to say that so they can get something for him but I wanted to get across the point of all of Ian's tweet.

Would Brian Flores give up the #3 pick for Gilmore, the 15 and maybe another pick? That would ashore the Pats of getting Fields. Not saying I like it all that much with the Ohio Sts QB history and all. If they do like Fields I would think he needs coaching and a yr behind Cam would help.

I find it very weird we are getting reports about how they like Fields. The Patriots don't openly share information like that. We've seen it before with guys like Mayfield who we had zero chance of getting, yet never with targets they actually drafted. People link players to them all the time based on fit, like Mac Jones. Just not reports saying the Patriots really like him, that kills your leverage and hurts your ability to draft players.

A wild hypothetical to toss out there. What would it take to move up to take Lawrence, Wilson, or Lance? Especially those first two guys? NE is pretty much set with their roster for the most part, aside from what we'd say is the "quarterback of the future." Given that the salary cap will be expanding a good bit... and any rookie's contract will be a bargain related to the salary cap, might it make sense to trade a couple of players to garner draft picks to combine with ours... or maybe just trade our current players and picks... to acquire that future stud? The salary cap grows in coming years and NE can add parts as it does grow in the future. In other words, if - going forward - gathering talent QB is paramount vs cap issues, would it make sense to get the cream of the QB crop to build around?

Pats waived last year's drafted kicker, Justin Rohrwasser.

Pats waived last year's drafted kicker, Justin Rohrwasser. Aguayo is the developmental kicker it would seem then Apparently Rohrwasser couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn in camp. Was literally hitting outhouses off to the side of the field. Couple that with the media storm for him and what a disaster that pick was Whatever it’s only a 5th. At least they got Onwenu in the 6th

Trading up for Lawrence is impossible, literally. Getting up to the second pick, is also virtually i load dove considering the Jets hold it and even if they didn’t, the package necessary would be insane. They just aren’t realistic scenarios to really entertain. The Patriots don’t have any players on the roster that can be flipped for high draft picks. There’s not one guy, you can say would get a first round pick back in a trade and the teams looking to acquire someone like Gilmore would be good so you’re probably looking at a later second as best case for any guy on the roster.

I bet you could get a first for Onwenu, the way he played RT and was dominant.

James White back in the fold, per Reiss and others.

I bet you could get a first for Onwenu, the way he played RT and was dominant. I’d say that’s certainly possible. Not many right tackles and guards drafted in the first round tho for a reason. Have to factor that in and the fact you only have 3 more years of control (very cheap tho which does go the other way) vs 5 from a first round pick. For clarity; a lot of guys are drafted who play right tackle early in their career or end up staying there but are almost always looked at as potential left tackles with right tackle being the acceptable fall back. Onwenu, I don’t think is looked at as a potential left tackle. I do agree it wouldn’t shock me tho, I’d be a surprised if he did net a first tho.

www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/watch-jarrett-stidham-works-out-hunter-henry-new-patriots?ampVery interesting that it's Stidham getting the new guys together. At the bottom you have Palmer talking about Stidham. Now Palmer works with all the top guys, the list is crazy. He says no QB he's worked with had a bigger mental hurdle than Stidham given the College offenses he played in. Basically going from the simplest College offenses to the most complex NFL offense. Add in the lost summer and short camp due to Covid. If Palmer says don't sleep on Stidham that is the one guy we should listen to. He's the guy Lawrence picked to work with, Mahomes, Watson, etc. He thinks Sam Darnold is going to be a great QB. Talks about how only the Jets wouldn't call and check up on him, when every other team calls on there QBs who he trains for six months every year.

In theory it all supply and demand, if a team picking late first really needed a OG/RT that didn't have much money I could totally see them offering a first. I mean Joe Thuney just got 80 million, Onwenu is making $830,000, he doesn't even count right now for our top 51. He was the #10 rated RT and graded very highly at RG and LG. If you want to move up for a QB, he's a big chip if you put him on the table.

Cap Update - Pats at 11,547,366 after the signing of James White (2.5 cap hit) per Miguel. This doesn't include the retirement of Patrick Chung (so his hit is on the books) as the cap impact will depend on when it's processed.
I'd like to see them sign Lawrence Guy or another comparable DL. Other than that, head to the draft where the goals should be:
1. Be aggressive in the 1st to move up and get your guy (whether that a QB of the future or potential star at another position). 2. Draft a developmental QB. Obviously, the best combo would be if #1 handles this as well. 3. A young interior OL is likely the last need. They typically draft these so I'm sure it will be addressed. 4. Continue to add youth.

Quinn Meinerz is a G/C out of Wisconsin-Whitewater who really popped at the Senior Bowl. Not sure where he ends up but seems like a great target in the 3rd or 4th (remembering our 3rd is a comp pick). Someone along the way mocked him as a Pats kind of player, with the right toughness who can be coached up after having DIII competition.

Isn’t a young tackle a much greater need than a young interior guy? Both our starting tackles are questionable to make it thru a season let alone confident long term solutions. On the flip side, our interior is young and signed longer term. Add: I do agree they should add a young interior guy too - just think tackle is a lot more pressing.

His first one Jackson, Allen, Mayfield, Darnold and Rosen. I'm easily taking Allen and Mayfield over Jackson right now because they are much better passers. I wouldn't be surprised to see Darnold jump Jackson either if he actually gets a solid supporting cast. Jackson might be the best playmaker, yet he's still hasn't really proven he can win games with his arm. 2019 he has Stidham over Daniel Jones, I'd be damn happy if Stidham is better than Jones. I'll give him credit if he's right on Lawrence versus Wilson. I have Lawrence in the Payton Manning, Andrew Luck, once every ten years no doubt franchise QB tier. I'm not surprised by the Fields and Lance part, one is crazy raw and Fields lacks the advanced feel/stuff. The most surprising player is easily Mond at #4. That's the most extreme pick he's ever made. Ranking the top guys, first round guys decently is one thing, ranking a guy who's rated 4th/5th round over two guys who will get drafted most likely in the first is putting yourself out there. If he's right with those I'll give the guy some major credit. I still love Kyle Trask for our system, he wouldn't fit what a bunch of teams do, yet he fits our system like a glove. He doesn't have an elite arm or crazy athletic ability, yet he's tough, moves around, is highly accurate and does a bunch of advanced stuff like look off safeties and go through his reads. Go look at the numbers Fields put up against Bama versus Trask. One struggled against an advanced D filled with NFL talent, Trask was on fire lighting up that D.

In priority order:
- Future starting T - Future IOL who can play C - Future development T who maybe becomes a 3rd T
Since I'm hoping my #1 in the original post gets accomplished, figured we're starting with our 3rd rd comp at best and figured, at that point, you're probably not getting the future starter.
So if moving up in Rd 1 doesn't get done, then yes, I think it makes a ton of sense to try and get a future T. Otherwise, you might be picking from a group that has no more upside then Herron/Cajuste so meh.
Was just figuring that Herron/Cunningham/Cajuste has more talent than Toran/Reynolds/Martin.
That being said, they are likely to take both.
PS - I know looking at it this way is NOT how BB would but . . .

Daniel Jones sucks so far - sure he’s better than Stidham but you don’t want either starting fir your team so who cares at this point.

I'd point out Justin Herron started games at LT and played well as a rookie and Onwenu did the same at RT. So it's not like we don't have young players who can play OT. They also have Yondy Cajuste who liked like a steal, yet two straight years on the IR.
You can't fill every long-term need in one draft. Let's see how it plays out, you can always go after an OT next year.
