Pats brought in Marvin Hall, Patricia has experience with him from the lions
Pure deep threat. May not make the team but he’s had some minor success in the league

Not surprising, but Julio Jones will wind up with Tennessee. I think he would have been a great fit with Mac Jones, but I never expected the Pats to make the move. I think he would have completed the team as I think they still lack a true go-to-guy as their #1 receiver, but I guess we'll see.

I kinda hate looking at salary cap hits, you can adjust those. I mean that takes away Mike Evans last year, even though he's on year three of a deal averaging 16.6 million. Cooks on his 5th year option ranked high, Alshon Jeffery was on a long-term deal averaging 13 million. Heck 49ers traded for Sanders on last year of a big deal. Heck the Falcons had Jones in 2017. 2016 you had the Broncos, looking at the last 12 teams to play in the superbowl a lot teams had big time money spent on the WR position. The big outliers was the Patriots with Brady that had Gronk and Edleman.
Jones on trade without his signing bonus money is rather cheap if he's still Jones. The money isn't the issue for me, it's is he still elite?
You won't find a better time to spend on an elite WR than when you have a rookie QB. If you won't draft WRs, you either need to sign them or trade for them.

If Julio were available earlier, I wonder if they’d have been more apt to go for him. If you add him now, then you have 4 8 figure pass catchers on the roster between him, Algholor, Smith and Henry. That’s a lot of money tied up there. And a HUGE piece of the pie is whether or not he’s still Julio the elite at 33, 34 and 35 years old.

I mean none of those guys has a ten million cap hit this year, only Jones does. It's exactly what I'm talking about. You are judging those contracts based on average salary and future cap hits, yet all three have cap hits at or below 7 million this year. Just because a team plays with the cap hits for a single year doesn't change the overall contract. Agholor is seven million this year and 15 million next year, ten million in dead money. They did that with almost every contract. Yet you can always play with the numbers, just look at the Bucs. Gronks cap number doesn't reflect his true contract, neither does Brady or a bunch of those guys. So yeah you're likely right, they need to role over that money for next year or they are going to be doing a bunch of restructures next year. Yet the issue isn't Jones cap hit, it's the same basically as Agholor, that's the issue. Yet even then Jones cap number doesn't equal his contract either, with the Falcons eating tons of money. Even then starting in June you can spread the hit over three years. So you could cut Agholor and get almost 12 million in cap space. Age is the biggest factor for me. I certainly see the downside, yet I also see the upside for one of the most dominate WRs every.

The other dynamic is absorbing another big salary while Gilmore and Jackson are stuck with their contracts. I still wonder if both players will end up on the week 1 roster. Long term, I'd be very surprised if both are still on the 2022 roster, and I'd put the odds close to 50/50 that even one is on the 2022 roster. I know that sounds crazy, but individually we've seen guys with their profiles leave the Pats in FA. Gilmore's age and market value make it tough, if the Pats can't extend him before this year I'd bet on a departure in FA unless they tag him. JC seems like a guy that will be paid as a true #1 corner, and I don't think Bill will value him like that. I don't see Bill overextending himself for one player just because he's losing the other, he won't view it like that even if fans and media will.

Yes there’s a lot of moving parts with regards to these two and it’s almost impossible to go thru them all. I do think they play off of one another. It’s a big year and remember they will have the franchise tag to use on one of them if that player warrants it. Unlike Thuney, as a guard, corner is a premier position so you should be able to franchise Jackson and trade him for a really good return IF he takes the next step and really shows to be a lock down corner. However, if that happens, I think Bill pays him. He will pay a true premier corner number 1 type dollars. He did with Revis and he did with Gilmore. He won’t pay Jackson as a premier corner if he has holes in his game, that prevents him from being left on an island. That defeats the purpose. Gilmore is on the wrong side of 30, which is why they haven’t been able to trade him, and his play dropped off a bit last year. How he plays this year is big and he’s not going to get a massive contract at 32 years old. That just doesn’t happen for a corner, which helps him possibly return but other teams could still pay him more. I bet he gets a little more money from the team this summer for this season then it’s a McCourty/Hightower/Edelman/KVN type free agency where he can go out and see what is out there and he’ll know the Patriots number. I put his return past this year around 33%. My guess is they are both back this year, they’ve left themselves thin behind them so I’d be surprised at this point if they dealt one of them.

Julio Jones contract for this season is easy for the Patriots. However, they aren’t in Brady all in territory with this team. They spent a lot of money and pushed a lot of cap hits, that’s true, but they also signed young, in their prime, players as well. These signings are as much future additions as they are get back and win now additions.

You could easily lose a bunch of guys, Gilmore, Jackson, McCourty and Hightower are free agents, just to name some of the big guys. If you're going to spend big on weapons, do it when your QB is on a rookie level deal. I'd also point out, you don't get the chance to get guys like Jones that often. I mean look what Hopkins cost on a contract. If you think he's washed up, okay. I just can't be the only one scared that the whole offense revolves around Agholor repeating last year. Jones was like the missing piece to this team.

If Julio Jones guaranteed you a whole different level then you probably make the move but this team hinges at the QB play and if the QB is good there are plenty of weapons here to have a very good offense.

If Julio Jones guaranteed you a whole different level then you probably make the move but this team hinges at the QB play and if the QB is good there are plenty of weapons here to have a very good offense. We just view the contracts differently. I see an all in type move because I don't like the cap hits starting next year, you see long-term assets. I can't wrap my head around those two TEs at around 16 million, Agholor at 15 million, Judon at 16 million, heck even Mills at over 6 million. If you back load contracts I think it should be to get value now. If you were building to win down the road, front load the contracts or make them more equal. Unless you think Jones is washed up, he does just that. He's adding Randy Moss in 2007, yeah Welker and Stallworth gave you maybe enough, Moss took things nuclear. Jones if he's Jones is in a class of elite difference makers. He's like Moss and Gronk, a defense can plan the whole D around stopping them and they still can't do it. That's why I would have done it. Worth what he went for all day long in my book. Even if he crashes and burns, I wouldn't have an issue. He could literally make Newton a better player, open up things like few players can.

Mandatory minicamp starts today… it’s a big day to see if Gilmore reports.

He has the highest cap number of any CB in football. He's coming off a down year and is getting older. Well within his right to do whatever he wants, yet if he's going to hold out for training camp, trade his ass.
You want a new big deal, go out and earn it. Sorry I don't feel bad for a guy that signed a huge free agent deal that had him among the top paid CB in the league for years. He picked the wrong year to holdout. The Patriots defense is loaded, not many teams will give you a better chance to look good and I don't think many teams are giving him a massive deal right now.
I love how people want to only look at yearly cash and not add in signing bonus money. He's not just being paid $7 million.
Let's hope this is more rehab and a mini statement, rather than a full on holdout. I have zero issues with him skipping a mini camp if that makes him feel better.

Gilmore is officially a holdout. Not coming to mini-camp. We'll see what happens after.
Agree with your sentiments, UMass. They obviously made a one year adjustment last year, he knew what he was agreeing to. He wasn't a DPOY last year.
That said defense gets quite a bit shallower without its only Blue Chip chess piece. BB has succeeded and will succeed with this level of talent, but Gilmore would give the defense the ceiling to carry the team instead of just survive.

I agree with all of that except the automatically trade him piece. I’m confused by the stance though… You talk about them being all in then don’t want to pay 4-5m extra to keep your number 1 corner? I don’t get that… you’d add Jones at his salary and give up draft picks but won’t pay GilMore a bit more.

Yeah I go all in to add a difference maker. If you don't want to do that, then maybe you should trade Gilmore. If I'm spending money it's to lock up Jackson. If you think this year is about setting a foundation why would you just pay him more? I have a big issue with guys demanding raises if they don't deserve them. He has the highest cap number at his position in the league. He's not coming off of 2019. His average salary puts him likely ahead of last year's rankings.

So it begins… Newton can’t handle a competition. www.patspulpit.com/2021/6/15/22535324/patriots-practice-reports-mandatory-minicamp-mac-jones-cam-newton-donta-hightowerStill, Jones looked better than Newton (let alone Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer). Newton, meanwhile, had what was described as a rocky day. “After the first competitive 11-on-11 period, when Jones got seven reps and Newton got three, Newton walked slowly to the next drill, at times with his head down. Got there as the drill was underway. Spent a good deal of time standing by himself watching other QBs take reps,” noted Phil Perry of NBC Sports. “During Newton’s next chance behind center, he launched three passes deep. First almost picked by Jalen Mills. Second overthrown. Third overthrown and picked by Kyle Dugger. He then completed his next three attempts.”

Newton has said nothing but great things about Mac and has been helping Mac out a bunch (according to Mac iirc). “Can’t handle competition” is sports radio garbage. He hurt his hand a week ago. It’s June.
I don’t understand the need for some to cut others down to prop one up. I’m rooting for Mac and hope he wins the job as I think the teams ceiling gets raised with him but the hate Newton gets is ridiculous. He’s been nothing but a model citizen and good teammate and he’s making backup money or less

It’s another thing to carry yourself a certain way when the young kid starts getting more reps and more attention than you. Reports from multiple people there were along the lines of Cams body language completely changing. Let’s see if that’s a one off and a misread or how he handles it. He’s literally never had to compete for a job in his life. That’s not a knock on him, that’s just how good he was going back forever. Let’s see what happens. But you are right, I shouldn’t have stated it as a fact. I should have written “Can Cam handle a competition?”

That’s fair, I think the young kid was always going to get more attention than him though and I’m sure he understands that and understands why
I do hope Mac wins the job outright, that would only mean great things for us imo

A week ago when Newton went down it was Mac Jones struggles and Stidham clearly looked like the best guy. I'm a huge Stidham guy, yet didn't post it because it means nothing. It all starts during training camp, those are the reports that will have a bunch of meaning. That's where you'll see if Mac Jones is ready.

Well you’ll have to get used to it since Mac was a guy I liked before he was even rumored to go at 3 - when it was questionable if 15 was way too high for him so I’ll be gloating in any meaningless good “news” while I can before he lets me down. Oh I’ll also be brushing down days off as learning experiences that will make the great Mac even better long term. It won’t be rational or fair it’s just what it will be.
