It kind of really sucks that teams get months and months to evaluate players for the Rule 5, including all of the possible breakouts and regressing players that you'd never see in a typical year because of the incredibly long length of time between the deadline and the draft. Going to be some big gains and losses this year more than any other year. They should have had the Rule 5 before the lockout.

Who says there will even be a rule 5 draft this year. If time is short, maybe they punt this draft this year.

Has there been any mention of whether/when a Rule 5 draft might occur?

My guess is they address it once we know if these negotiations today lead to a deal or not.

As has been stated a lot of teams were in a 40 man crunch and would have left some solid rule 5 options available but I don't hate that the Sox aren't at risk of losing anyone now.

It would not be fair to teams that had breakout players that aren't on the 40 because teams got a much better idea of who is much better than they were at the time the 40 man decision was finalized for the Rule 5.
Boy that was a mouthful.

Boy that was a mouthful. Many Teams weren’t letting scouts into their minor facilities for this very reason.

14 page thread for a draft that will never happen.

There wasn't anyone in this draft that would have made up for the players the Sox would have lost. Good luck 2 years in a row.

It gives the Red Sox another year to assess the players they did not protect. After a missed 2020, some of the players who might have had trouble getting back to where they were can now hopefully show their stuff. After the lockout killed all trading, Bloom can wheel and deal some of the lesser prospects for younger ones who will not need to be added as soon.

Do prospect for prospect trades ever really happen outside of OOTP?

Do prospect for prospect trades ever really happen outside of OOTP? As part of the Beni trade, KC and the Mets were trading prospects. Some of prospects also ended up as Red Sox. Yes, as a 51 year Red Sox fan I have seen prospects traded for prospects. Bloom also traded Abyar (who was on the 40-man) to Colorado for Christian Koss (who was not) as just one example, but if you do not pay attention to that kind of thing you would be obviously to it…

Do we know when the R5 deadline is? I think we make a trade before it, but don't think there will be a lot of trades at the fringes of the 40 man this year since so many teams will be against the limit. So I think the trade will be from the legit prospect group (Duran/Gilberto high on the list) I want to keep each of Crawford/Feldman/Ward. There might be logic for keeping a spot open for someone who falls through the cracks elsewhere, though we have a much lower draft pick than last year obviously. I think most/all of the other fringe guys get through. Crawford might even as well, but I doubt Feldman or Ward do. Feldman just did an interview segment w R Bradford on WEEI early during 5pm hour, highlighting the player side of the Rule 5 not being held - that he was anticipating an opportunity for a shot at MLB level

Just glad a scrub team can’t stash Rafaela as their 26th man/bench glove/pinch runner

Right!...and, here was Bradfo again, except listening to a very honest Feldman discuss his anticipation and subsequent disappointment, what was in effect his 1st opp in the bigs, being taken away from him

Feldman just did an interview segment w R Bradford on WEEI early during 5pm hour, highlighting the player side of the Rule 5 not being held - that he was anticipating an opportunity for a shot at MLB level I listened to this interview and found it fascinating. Feldman said he was disappointed not to be added to the 40-man roster and hoped to be taken in the Rule 5 draft. He said in not so many words: "I wanted out of here and am disappointed to still be here." I don't begrudge him feeling that way because it's easily understandable. I just thought it was a blunt and ballsy thing for a minor leaguer to say. There are still a number of things I don't understand about the new CBA and the rationale for getting rid of the Rule 5 draft is one of them. It doesn't seem that the players would have been in favor of dumping it because it's been a way for guys who are stuck in an organization to possibly get a chance somewhere else. And I can't think of a reason why getting rid of it would be priority for the owners.

Players who aren’t on the 40-man aren’t part of the union. It’s as easy as that.

There’s nothing special about Durbin Feltman. At best he’s a 5th/6th inning guy unless his arm gets dipped in the fountain of youth and goes back to a few years ago. I understand his disappointment after all the hype he got but at the end of the day he’s not the same guy.

Players who aren’t on the 40-man aren’t part of the union. It’s as easy as that. I understand that, but two points: 1. Given that the non-40 guys aren't part of the union, it would be understandable for the PA to be indifferent to their plight. But it shouldn't be an incentive for the PA to do something that actually hurts them.
2. The young kids in the Dominican and other places outside the US aren't in the union either. Yet, the PA is taking a position on an international draft. I still don't understand that one.
I just don't see how the PA or the owners benefit from deep-sixing the Rule 5 draft.

I just don't see how the PA or the owners benefit from deep-sixing the Rule 5 draft. The manner in which young Dominican players are recruited and signed plays a large role within the Dominican Republic and a huge role within Dominican baseball. There are several very influential ex-players (David Ortiz at the forefront) who are concerned about up-ending the current system. Players within the union listen to Ortiz and the other influential ex-players (and non-players who they all know from their baseball development systems) and therefore it's a problem for the union. It's not a 'no' but MLB has to convince these players and ex-players that Dominican baseball will be better-off as a result of the international draft. (other countries are affected, but it's mainly the DR) For the rule-5 draft, a couple of dozen players, who are mostly unknown to the members of the MLBPA, will be affected. So, nobody cares too much and it's a footnote in the overall proceedings. I don't think the MLB really cares much either (if the players said 'we keep the rule 5 draft or we don't agree' then it would have been kept) but havinng the rule-5 draft at this time would be a bit of a logistical headache while everyone is scrambling to start playing baseball. It's just easier to not have it and nobody really cares about the handful of players affected. So, nobody really cares, and since it's a headache, they just waived it this years. I went through the scouting report of each rule-5 eligible player a couple of months ago and I don't believe any Red Sox player would have been drafted. There was too much other talent available due to the missed half-season.
