I would like to see a good 10 game stretch , playing every day, for Chavis. See if he can get in a groove

When all is said and done, the Red Sox will have paid I think about $150 million for David Price to make 98 starts with a 3.84 ERA, good for ~10.5 WAR. I feel like if you squint you ought to be able to discern some dead money in that contract one way or the other... No doubt there is, but 2018 doesn’t look like it did without him. He was excellent in the regular season, and he was excellent in the ALCS and WS. Not saying it is worth all the money, but reducing it to 98 starts, 10.5 WAR may overlook what some of those meant. (And... I have *never* been a Price fan. I didn’t want him. But I give him credit — he played a big part in a banner). Yes, it was worth it. 😀

I will be thrilled if Chavis and Dalbec catch fire and cement themselves into the lineup. Good night for them tonight, badly needed.

Poor Franchy. He is missing out on the fun tonight. Dont feel too bad he will be able to catch the games on tv when he gets sent down to AAA.

Another big throw from Renfroe! Who was the relay man, Arauz or Chavez? He threw a strike too.

Nicely done. The Garrett Show is a hit! Whitlock is certainly a keeper!

Another big throw from Renfroe! Who was the relay man, Arauz or Chavez? He threw a strike too. That was Araūz in the middle. Tremendous play: a rocket from Renfroe and a lighting quick turnaround for a bullet to Vazquez who was perfectly positioned for the swipe tag. That's why I follow baseball, for stuff like that.

At the risk of jinxing him Richards having a nice start. Has been pitching like the guy I was hoping he could be when Bloom signed him. Not even close to an ace but a very capable starter. Still early in the year but if he keeps this up for a year there's a strong chance they take that option for next year. Big credit to Bloom on this one. Wasn't much of a fan at the time he was signed, happy to be wrong! I live in San Diego, and had seen Richard here. He was more than solid, and I knew he would come around. The rotation currently does not have a true #1, but what they have is more than enough to keep them in the race if the offense can find some consistency. IMO

I'm a big Bloom fan so far, but I think he can be blamed for Franchy and Renfroe's bad starts at least. First of all, he went out of his way to replace their starting LFer with Franchy. (For the record: my position all along on the Benintendi trade has been "to be determined," and so it remains.) And on Renfroe, the worry some of us had since the off-season is that the outfield was a little too thin, and while Renfroe would be fine, even good, in a platoon role, he'd end up getting way too many ABs against righties. The numbers so far:
vs. L: 33 PAs, 110 wRC+ vs. R: 80 PAs, 58 wRC+
When he's made into an everyday starter and you have no one on the bench to hit for him when the other team brings in a righty reliever, that's what happens.
If Duran comes up in four weeks and rakes, and Renfroe is pushed into a true platoon role, then I'll say "Oh, okay, so that was the plan. It's a gamble but it worked out." For now, though, it looks like a hole in the roster construction, and that's on Bloom.
This is what is so interesting. In the off season, folks who liked the Renfroe signing (iirc) seemed to like it as a platoon move. But the outfield has been Franchy-AV-Renfroe (or a similar construction that puts those two guys in together) far too often. And the problem I always had with concept of the platoon is you have a guy who is *by design* pretty helpless in same-hand situations as next-man-up in case of rest, injury, substitution. That is, if you could create a platoon in which the cosmos behaved and had you facing just optimal matchups, great. But baseball is uncooperative. I also am not so sure the plan was to hurry Duran along. That doesn’t appear to be the MO. He may come, bismillah, but I really doubt they said “we’ll trade for Franchy, sign Renfroe, put Kiké in CF, but by June we’ll go to Duran.” They will go to him if he can’t be denied, but if they were being cautious going into the year, why not continue being cautious with the development of one of your 2-3 most important prospects? I think they figured they could get away with Renfroe and Franchy and if not thry’d get Santana or some other “bridge.” But I also think they didn’t think it would matter so much. Agreed, I think RS staff figured to supplement Franchy with Gonzalez, Santana, and even JD occasionally at home, but did not figure Franchy would be so, so bad (Franchy should not play in the mlb for at least a month or two, prove he can hit right handers, which will not happen), and should be banished to AAA Rusney style never to be in a Boston uniform again (I did not think an OPS under .400 was even possible for a Red Sox player with 80 ABs. Any manager to let such an unproductive player continue to play would feel the rath of the fans, but Bogaerts, JD, Devers, and Verdugo have really made up the difference so far.)

Michael Chavis... lead off man?? Betcha never saw that coming. He might get some starts leading off, but will be replaced as soon as Hernandez is back. Chavis walks even less often than Hernandez. SSS, Chavis has 0. Although I think Chavis will remain in the lineup as Gonzalez can shift to LF, so that Chavis can play 2B while Dalbec plays 1B.

Hard in retrospect to fully to appreciate that ride. The Red Sox won the first ever World Series in 1903. 2018 was their best season ever, so no matter that there is a price to pay for 2018, it was worth it. I still remember saying, “Wow, they are 50 games over .500! I never thought I would see that”.

Notes:
• Love watching someone play like they realllllly don’t want to go back to Worcester. Chavis: Here to stay (Hopefully)? Franchy: Does he have a hot date (with Polar Park)?
• Renfroe has been HOT and an ace in RF. His numbers are starting to look decent. Can benefit further from appropriate platooning. Maybe approaching half way there until people start coming around on this pickup ($3M, 2 more years Arb)?
• Is Richards our ace? Would I have been banned for suggesting that 3 weeks ago?
• Bizzardo with a couple sweet cups of coffee. Austin Brice going to join Franchy on that date soon? Or does Josh Taylor have a date with the unemployment bureau?
• Nice to see Duran, Cassas, Hernandez moonshots tonight. I don’t expect to see any of them soon.
• Whitlock has looked human in his last few appearances. Short term this stretching out of Whitlock is brutal to watch after we got a taste of 1 inning Whitlock at the start of the season. Long term good plan? If they’re stretching him all the way I almost feel like he starts next year in Worcester.....
• Updated win prediction: 92

Another idea for a photoshop: Bazardo's head on Superman villain Bizarro's body.
He holds a special place in my heart as the namesake of the roller coaster at Six Flags that I blacked out on once.

Interesting you blame DD for a trade Bloom made. Will Sale be a disadvantage when he comes back? If you mean -Price $16 million, then let me correct it.....Price still on the RS roster $32 million !!!!!! The newest relief pitcher for the Dodgers... Soxfansince1971 knew what I was saying here. I wasn't "blaming" DD for a trade. In fact, the trade was the best of two bad options. One was to be on the hook for $16M/year for the duration of the contract. The other was to be on the hook for the full $31M/year. To the question of whether Sale will be a "disadvantage" when he comes back, I don't expect him to provide anywhere near $25M in value this year in the limited number of innings he will pitch. I think there's also a good chance he doesn't provide that much value in the last three years either. I thought that contract was whacky at the time and like it even less now. It was a very D-Dom thing to do - and that's coming from someone who still thinks D-Dom was the type of GM the RS needed when he took over in August 2015.

Richards, xwOBA / wOBA:
.355 / .356 first 4 starts .303 / .299 last 4
.303 would have him 51st among MLB starters, which is a strong #3.
Eovaldi's 24th, which is a bit better than average #2, and E-Rod, despite his lack of velo, is 35th, which is still a #2.

Do you have Pivetta’s numbers by any chance? I’m curious what they are in comparison.
