He seems like he can dial it up for a strikeout whenever he needs, I think he’s purposely pitching to contact knowing he throws a bowling ball that sucks to hit. Plus it keeps his pitch count down, and that’s necessary since we need him going 6/7 innings every time out these days

Count me as a little bit discouraged by Bello's play the last six weeks or so. A little bit, not a lot.

Don't know if that was the plan yesterday but it would make sense for the reason you state.

Ludicrous

This kid has done all you could ask and more, he pitches like a veteran, but you have to remember how green he really is. This is his first FULL season as a Big League stater.

The toughest/bravest Red Sox is hands down a 24 year old (essentially) rookie starting pitcher named Brayan Bello. This pitching staff has been absolute beleaguered and devastated with injuries, and he has gone out and given the team 6+ innings in 10 of his last 11 starts.
Again, he is 24, starting for the BOSTON RED SOX. He doesn't let the boneheaded plays and relievers costing him wins get to him even slightly. He takes it in stride, while a majority of veteran pitchers would have been pouting last night after coming out in the 7th. He plays with a joy for the game that is matched by a competitiveness that will continue to grow. That attitude will be infectious as he becomes the anchor of this rotation for years to come, as was the case with Pedro. I am in no way saying the talent is the same as Pedro's, or the intensity. But the joy Bello has going out to pitch for the Boston Red Sox is very comparable.
The Red Sox are 13-6 in games that he's pitched in. I don't care about the home runs, or the FIP, or the 10 other trends that can be picked apart. He's 24 years old, and is the most reliable starting pitcher for one of the two most high pressure/high expectation franchises in baseball (Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees).

The kid is well beyond his years on and off the field. His future is massive!

The kids amazing! My only thing with him right now is his slider/cutter. He feels like he has completely dropped his slider as a pitch right now. What is the issue with it? It seems to have good break and similar movement patterns to Luis Castillo but he can't get swings and misses on it. Is it control/command or shape and tunneling? As well, do we think he can improve his cutter for next season or add a new improved breaking ball? I feel like that is his next step to being a true ace type.

It’s a good sign that the results aren’t too bad while he’s off, but he should be missing a lot more bats than he has. He’s still figuring it out.

I honestly think teaching cutters to young pitchers, in about 90% of circumstances, is extraordinarily counterproductive and numbers demonstrate it time and again. Houck is a prime example- his arm slot/release point just does not not make that pitch a good fit for him- and I believe it's the pitch that he was getting hit hardest on before he went to the IL. I don't understand the logic behind it. But that's a conversation for another day. I think it is relatively straightforward going into the offseason.. Pedro Martinez (to Bello): "If you let me teach you how to throw a legit curveball/slider, you will be a Cy Young candidate next year, and for a lot of years moving forward" Bello: "Yea that sounds pretty cool to me. Let's do that option."

I do think that something on a different plain, maybe that Rich Hill curveball can come along. it like everything he throws has tail (which is good) , but he seems to throw the curve as a "show me" get it over type pitch.

The cutter is something that’s brand new so I’m betting that some days he has good feel for it and others he has no feel for it. The outings you don’t see it it’s probably the latter

Seems to me that he's more of a Derek Lowe/Brandon Webber/Jake Peavy type than a Pedro Martinez/pick a hard throwing strikeout HOF type pitcher. I think that's what's confusing a lot of people. Peavy and Webber were as nasty as anyone in their 20's.

Bello has dumped the slider he used for a long time and the cutter he has been tinkering with and has gone all in on a more sweeping version (that Savant is still calling a slider rather than categorizing it as its own pitch.)

I think that makes sense. With his changeup and sinker, I don't think he needs a cutter to deal with lefties, so it's about identifying what type of breaking ball shape he can use to get whiffs and strikes when he needs them. Going with a sweeper seems like a good thing to try, though he's probably a guy who could be successful with several different pitch mixes depending on whether he wants to emphasize weak contact or strikeouts.

I was thinking that he might be getting close to his limit, but he did pitch 153 innings last year and he's at 126 now. There's probably something better than innings to determine limits, but it seems like a lot of his innings are pretty easy ones.

That’s huge. It was downright nasty yesterday.
Kids got a high aptitude for the game, he’s really good at making adjustments

Congrats to Bello on being named the 2024 Opening Day starting pitcher. First homegrown starter on Opening Day since Clay Buchholz took the ball in 2015. Youngest Opening Day starter since Aaron Sele in 1995. Let’s hope this squad is surprising and fun like that insane 1995 squad of Canseco, Hit Dog and Willie McGee.

For anyone who enjoys or plays MLB’s premier video game “The Show”, they inexplicably have Bello rated this year as a 72 (essentially like a C-). This is not relevant to the real world Brayan Bello - although if he wants to use the low rating as additional motivation as he gets ready for Opening Day, by all means go ahead.
