hmmm Bowden: I was also told to keep an eye on the Boston Red Sox re: Scherzer. Apparently the ownership in Boston is really pushing Chaim Bloom to make an aggressive run at Scherzer with the idea that they're going to get Chris Sale back, and combining Sale and Scherzer, the ownership really likes the chances of winning the World Series.

If Scherzer has stated a desire for the west coast, then you gotta figure they would have a better shot at resigning him and could justify a bigger trade package. It would therefore seem riskier for the Sox to try and match/outbid them

Yeah, the thought you and jkfer98 had is the same thought I have. Let Chaim do what he thinks is right. And with ownership, who are we talking about? Does John Henry actually lobby anybody for players? Is Tom Werner asking for Scherzer? I'd hate to think what they'd have to part with to outbid the Dodger, Padres, and Giants to rent Scherzer? I can't imagine Chaim would want to give Scherzer big bucks over the next few years. Messing up his farm system for a rental doesn't do much to sustain success. I'd love to see Scherzer on the Sox (who wouldn't?), but I just want Bloom to do what he thinks is right, without ownership interference. Let him do what you hired him to do.

Ok, here’s my deal. We go modest and acquire Cron and Bard from Colorado for people like Chavis, Wilson, Rosario, a promising AAA reliever/ closer type like Ort or Adames and a person or two from A ball Cron's away numbers are, well, Dalbecian. Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron left last night’s game with a groin strain and will be further evaluated today. Manager Bud Black said after the game that the Rockies have their “fingers crossed” that Cron won’t require a trip to the 10-day injured list (Twitter link via The Athletic’s Nick Groke), though that very comment is seemingly an acknowledgement of such a possibility. If Cron does head to the injured list, that would likely dash any hopes of the Rockies trading him — or at least of receiving much at all in return. (Injured players can still be traded.)

Yep obviously I'm fine with ownership saying here's extra money for you to spend and we can go past the luxury tax. It's also their team so if it's just a conversation saying hey we think Scherzer would really help us reach our end goal of a world series. But if its them saying anything close to you need to go get him than I'm gonna be pissed. I could just see it blowing up if they force his hand gut the farm. End up a bottom of the pack team like we've seen some recent seasons when Bloom is seemingly on pace to build a sustainable winner. They've done it before and that's what I'm most afraid of.

I like ownership being involved. The team has won several titles with ownership pushing and I hope it continues. I doubt there has been a single season when Sox ownership doesn’t voice strong opinions. In fact I bet most ownership groups are involved in significant trades.

Not apples and oranges but I have visions of signing Sandoval and Hanley. I've been of the mindset that those moves were all ownership and Cherington didn't have much choice. So sometimes I believe ownership does stupid things for what they perceive short term gains. If they force his hand and they give up a bunch of the top 10 than I believe it will be a very short term gain and will really screw up what Bloom is building.

Marlins have a good young staff and pitching prospects.
Craig Mish @craigmish As I reported previously Miami continues to pursue a CF option to replace Marte. It could come in the Marte trade or in a separate deal where they trade Pitching prospects. Some fascinating names to guess on, but none that I am certain on as of this Morning.

Frankly I'll be surprised if the Sox trade for anyone that rumors have identified, and I'll be disappointed in Bloom if he makes a trade I can come up with. So far I have liked his approach to trades and player valuations. Just ready to be excited for who comes in.
I know this makes me sound like a homer and Blindly following Bloom supporter, and that isn't the case. But he has earned my trust, and there are plenty of places this team could improve without making a huge splash.

He mentioned "obvious" types of trades, "pieces of the puzzle" type of acquisitions, "doubling down on areas of strength" (makes me think high leverage bullpen addition), moves that could "help this year's team and next year's and the year after that". I think he said he has "a lot of lines in the water". I think he realizes that he has a lot of options, which must feel so much better than the boxed in, have to make this type of move situation he walked into when he first joined the team. I cannot wait to see what he does. Like a great philosopher, named Tom Petty, once said, "The waiting is the hardest part."

I think there's some smoke, in that the Sox are interested, and probably have the pieces to make it happen, and that Bloom has inquired. But beyond that I have trouble believing ownership would force Bloom's hand if he believes that the deal would be too detrimental to the future.

He's mentioned "adding to strength" in public comments at least a couple of times, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did nothing re: 1B but added pitching. Or if they did some out-of-the-blue blockbuster. I wouldn't be surprised by anything at all, really! Except nothing. If they did nothing at all, that would surprise me.

I would be surprised if he didn't upgrade 1b. That is low hanging fruit that he should be able to upgrade without giving up too much. It would almost be a dereliction of duty if he didn't upgrade 1b. I'm not expecting just one deal. I'm expecting 2 or even perhaps 3. I would be surprised (disappointed but not devastated) if he stood pat.

I'm wearing out the refresh button on mlbtraderumors.com as I am wont to due during the deadline week. Does anybody feel like in general there are less rumors that had any steam than say 10 years ago? I don't trust most of twitter so I only scan it periodically to see if anyone trustworthy is saying something... I'm anxious to see what moves happen, and they are going to be moves none of us expected or even thought of because that seems to be Chaim's MO.

I could see ownership pushing Bloom to be aggressive whether that's in a supportive way or even in sort of a "we're in first, flags fly forever, let's get something done here" sort of way. I have a harder time seeing them specifically pushing him to trade for a specific player unless it was in response to internal talks in which he laid out several scenarios and they were like "we like this one make it happen" or something.
Like I don't think John Henry at this point is calling up Bloom and saying hey, I saw Buster Olney said Max Scherzer is available. He's a big name - go get him at all costs.

Guys, it's Jim Bowden talking here. I put zero trust in what he's saying. I change the channel on mlbnetwork in the car when he is on. Even after all of our drubbing of the MFY he still keeps saying the Yankees will be there and are the better team. It's like he gets advertising dollars every time he says their names.

Cron's away numbers are, well, Dalbecian. You may have made a substantial contribution to baseball lexicon. "Dalbecian" might someday rival Mendoza. It certainly rolls off the tongue. Much better than "Middlebrooksish"
