Wow, what a game. DO and Eck said that was the game of the year. Can't argue. Had the Yankees won they would have left feeling good about themselves. Instead of that it's hard for them to feel worse. They wiped out a great comeback win with an even more hideous loss. Really wish I had YES network. I have YES and love watching the post-game show after these meltdowns. Stream WFAN tonight and you'll have some entertainment.

Not sure why Torres didn't make the play to 3rd to get Kiké on Plawecki's grounder. Looked like he could have gotten him. Obviously Kiké making it to 3rd was crucial as it turned out.

I believe these are two mutually exclusive groups of commenters: those who think the team is good enough to get come from behind wins, as they have 30-odd times this season, and those who engage in incessant mopey loserspeak.I'd patent that one. I would change my screen name to that if I could.

Check out the replay of that inning on the Sox website (which is fun, anyway). There's no way Torres could have gotten him at third. His only play was to first.

It's been a long time since we've seen the dumpster fire gameday threads. I guess they've finally hit a downturn in play, which just makes the last 90 games of consistency all the more impressive. Knowing this team they'll rebound with 5 of the next 6 or 4 of the next 6 and end up going 6-4 or 5-5 for games 91-100. True to form, they won 5 out of 6 and ended the games 91-100 stretch at 6-4.

Check out the video - the moment when Torres was about to glove the ball. Kiké hesitated when the ball was hit and was only about 1/2 way to 3rd. I really think if Torres (had he Jeter-level awareness) could have got him. Glad he made the play to first, obviously.

Looks like I picked one hell of a game to miss! I actually was busy with IRL stuff, but I checked my phone and we were getting no hit pretty late and I'm like damn, so when The Verdugod hit that double I just tuned off completely like yes! Not getting no hit! Now I came home and check the scores and man good times. Good stuff.

“If Hal won’t fire Boone and Cashman he should sell the team.”
“Boone is managing scared and has no trust in anyone.”
“Boone looked shell shocked in the post game.”
“Boone is merely an errand boy taking notification from Cashman.”
“This is a soft, broken team, unable to adjust to the style and demands of each game.”
Lol. Man this is comedy.

Oh if he could be JD Drew I think we’d all be doing backflips. He’s not nearly that good of a ball player. At least not right now. On this date in 2007 JD Drew was hitting 247.354 .375 .729 On this date in 2007 JD Drew has over 34 WAR under his belt.

On yesterday’s date in 2007 JD Drew was a 31 year old man slugging .375 in the first year of a five-year contract. My point was that it’s too early to judge Verdugo, and especially too early to judge him based on how he’s hit with some physical problems the last few weeks.

I have watched the highlights of this comeback enough times to see how bad defense by Allen in RF probably cost the MFY the game. First he got turned around on Verdugos double or he would have had a good shot of catching that ball, terrible read as his first steps were forward. He bobbled the Vazquez blooper or he would have had a play at home with Hunter just rounding third at the time of the bobble. Then he didn't get his body and foot work in position on the Xander fly ball when he had time to. The play at the plate was close enough such that a good throw might have had him, if it was Renfro that is an out. None of the plays were obviously really bad other than the double over his head but the combination of the 3 bad plays led to the outcome. This all resonated with me with the discussions we have had about Durans D. Great win!!

Usually they're the Big Bad Yankees, winning 95 plus games per year and crushing a bunch of HRs. This year they're just flat out bad Yankees, as in not good. If they were intact I'd think they'd be much better and I think they were intact enough to have that run in May, but the shell of the team they are now, between the injuries, covid, and flat out ineffectiveness of their established players (like Chapman suddenly since the sticky substance ban, or Torres' power output plummetting), it's kind of amazing they're still over .500. They have put out a AAA lineup at times, with a matching bullpen. Sometimes I don't know what's more surprising, that the Sox are 10-3 against them or that more teams aren't.
I mean if the Sox had never played the Yankees this year the Sox would be 51-36 and the Yankees 48-37, only a 2 game difference in the standings. The Yankees have a ton of problems this year, but if not for the Red Sox, they'd be in the thick of at least the wild card race, if not the division race. Of course TB has knocked the Yankees around this year as well, although I'll be in the odd position of rooting for the Pinstriped Bastards to win some games against TB (Go Skankees!!)
The funny twist is that last year the Sox's 24-36 record wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad if not for the Yankees going 9-1 against them, which worked out swimmingly because instead of drafting toward the middle of the pack, they wound up with the #4 pick which wound up being potentially the best player in the draft class, Marcelo Mayer, so thank you Yankees for Marcelo Mayer, Adam Ottavino, and especially Garrett Whitlock.
The Sox killing the Yankees this year helps keep them home in October but doesn't move them toward the top of the draft. Perfect.

Who knows what would have happened out there with Judge instead of Allen?

It is a little extra fun to beat the MFY both on the field and in the front office. Man don't these MFY look like they are going to be bad for a while with their roster and bad contracts. Imagine paying 68 million for Stanton and Cole for their 30's. That's a lot of wasted money, I am sure they will be pushing hard for higher caps.

The Giancarlo contract just looks awful for NY right now, and I love it. In about 4 years the Marlins start kicking in 10 million per year for two years so maybe it won't be so bad then. But if he can't stay healthy now, I'm not sure what he's going to look like at 35+

Thank you Brian Cashman!

He could be a great pitcher for the life of that contract; aces tend to age well when they don't get hurt - look at Verlander, Greinke, Scherzer, etc. The Stanton contract looks awful; he's given them 6.0 fWAR since the start of 2018, and these are supposed to be the surplus value years of the contract. LeMahieu is 33, has a career 100 wRC+, and is signed through age 38. And Judge is either going to be hugely expensive or they're going to have a huge hole to fill. Torres is their only regular under 28 years old, and he's been kind of disappointing.
Incidentally, seems like Cashman did pull another rabbit out of the hat with Rougned Odor. Career 87 wRC+; 107 with the Yankees.
