Arroyo looked bad defensively and offensively, makes you wonder if covid impacted him significantly…

Makes you wonder if Barnes post season is on shaky grounds. Given the performances of most of the staff, I don't this will be a big concern. As far as how Barnes is pitching, and looking at the active pitchers, I would place him last - and if Whitlock can come back by the last series...we should be in fine shape.

womp WOMP (he has a lower ERA than every qualified starter in the AL)
2021 Chris Sale 30 IP..31 hits...Womp, Womp...not the Sale we are used to as yet. Hopefully he is building back up for the playoffs. 10 of those hits came in that start against the Rays where he had ridiculous BABIP luck. Meanwhile he's at almost exactly 10 K/9 and 2 BB/9, which is a better K/BB ratio than all but 3 qualified AL starters.

going into the last 9 games
who's hot - Eovaldi, Sale, Richards, Robles, Houck, Taylor, Hernandez, Davis, Brasier, Vazquez, Dalbec, Iglesias, Bogaerts, Hernandez, Renfro, Schwarber, Verdugo - that's 17, including 2 starting pitchers and 8 starting players.
Need to get going - Raffi (looked better tonight), JD (ditto), Arroyo (get the rust off), ERod, Pivetta, Ottavino (still walking too many, and the untimely home runs) - and the long shot - Barnes (who I don't think is needed) - and getting Whitlock healthy.
We are in a really good place heading into the critical 3 MFY games (and eventual Wild Card game).

Great dominating win. Greet the Mets. Beat the Mets.
F them for 1986. Great to see the Sox sweep all 4 games from them this year.
Sale has nice numbers but he's not sharp enough to the point where it's like the 2017, first half 2018 version of himself where it seemed like he's a sure thing. That's what the eye test tells me. He's basically a 5 inning pitcher at this point. Still good but I'm not sure I'd start him over Eovaldi in a wild card game.
Schwarber was awesome of course.
Barnes is scary bad. Not only is he not a closer candidate I don't know that he's a lock for a post season roster spot. It's like he forgot how to pitch. His failure to be the closer creates a situation where from day to day you dont know who's going to close and it puts a lot of pressure on Cora and makes it hard to establish a consistent bullpen hierarchy.
I would now say the Sox project to 93 wins which would host the Wild Card game.
Too bad Texas sucks and were no help whatsoever. If Texas would have hung on the upcoming series wouldnt have mattered.
Now the Sox must take a game vs NYY. They put themselves in a position that they don't have to take the series. Just don't get swept and do their job against Baltimore and Washington and that's 93 wins and a home game on Oct 5th.

Here's the shorter version: Maybe they will wear yellow in the World Series as well.

Makes you wonder if Barnes post season is on shaky grounds. You’d have to think so. They definitely won’t use him in the NYY series(unless in a total mop-up role similar to tonight). Ideally they can get him a few appearances next week to get him right before the playoffs. They are a better team when he’s sharp. Not sure he has enough time to figure it out, though.

The Red Sox peaked at 62-39 and then 63-40, 23 games over .500 before going on a 6-14 stretch that dropped them to 69-54. Since being swept by the Yankees the Sox have rebounded to go 19-11 (or 12-11 plus a 7 game winning streak) to bring them back to their high watermark of the season of 23 games over .500 with their current record of 88-65, so that's 25-25 in their past 50 games.

Makes you wonder if Barnes post season is on shaky grounds. You can bet that Cora is itching to pitch him at least three times during the final road trip. Taking the Yankees series will make that harmless, even if it fails.
He and Arroyo are the projects for the final trip. Get the rust off both and this team on paper is as good as anyone.

What’s sad is I don’t want this season to end because I don’t want to lose Schwarber and Renfroe. 2 players I watched everyone hate on when we acquired, but i’ve fallen in love with their games.

Martin Perez had a 10 pitch 9th inning. That's mildly interesting, but he faced 5 batters while doing it. How friggin rare must that be?

Renfroe is under team control. I love breaking that news to people, there’s a large portion of Sox fans who are under the impression he’s gone because he signed a one year deal. Telling them we have years of control on him and watching their eyes light up like Christmas is a joy

Makes you wonder if Barnes post season is on shaky grounds. He won’t be as bad as Kimberl was in 2018 playoffs lol
