Their lineup is terrible. Dominic Smith would be a roughly average hitter on that team. They need some balance if they want to remain competitive. I don't think Seattle wants to make that trade, but I would guess that they'd be willing to for the right price and I think Boston is in a good position to pay that right price. A team that's leading their division is just not going to trade away their best starting pitcher, let alone one that has 3.5 arb years to go. And their lineup is far from terrible; they have a 97 wRC+, and Julio Rodriguez hasn't even heated up yet. Happened to look today, Seattle has scored the 4th fewest runs in all of mlb ahead of only the A's, White Sox, and Mariners. Seems pretty terrible. They certainly can't think they're going to do much in the playoffs with that kind of production, if they even make it. Was looking because Houston is catching up to Seattle fast, if Houston ends up 1st in the AL West before the trade deadline I could see Seattle being open for business.

This is a fascinating time to follow the team. Even though it’s early July, these are extremely high leverage games for the Sox and will ultimately determine the buy/sell deadline approach.
Without making any moves, they WILL have:
Casas replacing Dom Smith Hendriks replacing last guy in pen
That is a dangerous team.
The Kyle Teel train needs to be expedited because Reese is one of the only remaining liabilities on the roster after Dom is DFA’d.
Give this team a mulligan on Chris Sale and they’re legitimate contenders.

7 games up. Bello’s performance today, along with Masa; Casas swinging a bat, Hendricks nearing rehab games, Mata on the mound, the trajectories of Abreu, Hamilton, Rafaella, Romy, Valdez all say we might be buyers. Though the Sox don’t need much at this point.

They'll need pitching.
In my mind, we need to offload Yoshida, and I'd be willing to offload prospects to do it. The Angels need to rebuild their system, and the Red Sox have prospects to burn.
- Yoshida, Blaze, and Cespedes/Campbell to LAA for Tyler Anderson; retain up to 25% of Yoshida's salary if necessary - Promote Yorke and move Grissom to DH
Who says no?

I think the Red Sox say no pretty quickly to that plan. First off, there’s no rotation spot for Tyler Anderson and I certainly hope they aim higher than that for any SP acquisition now or in the offseason. Also, the Red Sox aren’t in a payroll crunch at all, so why would they send a bunch of excess value to lose Yoshida’s salary. I’d way rather they cut him and paid everything than attached a top prospect. Lastly, I don’t get why you would replace Yoshida at DH with Grissom when Yoshida is a better hitter right now. At least wait to see if Grissom can start hitting at all before we hand him a starting role.

Jeff Passan joined the Section 10 Podcast ( link) and talked the Red Sox trade deadline. Suggested that a BIG SPLASH seemed unlikely based on where they are in their window, but didn’t seem to rule out a smaller move (or series of moves) if they keep winning. Around the 57 minute mark the discussion turned to whether they might flip someone like Kenley/or take a “buy & sell” approach. This was Passan’s response:

I think there is some chance Breslow moves on from Yoshida but if it were to happen my guess is it would be in the offseason. They will probably give him all of this year before deciding what they have in him. Having said that...there is no way they are moving Grissom to DH. He's a 23 year old middle infielder. There have been 17 players in the majors this year to appear at DH in at least 40 games, the average age is 31. And even the guys in their twenties are typically massive dudes who can't play defense anyway - Yordan, Eloy Jimenez, Brent Rooker. It's not appreciated enough just how much teams hate moving players to DH. You have to drag them kicking and screaming.

Which is also what ZiPS said. Instead it's not yet the all-star break and Sale has a 4.2 WAR lead.

The concern is he's consistently either had an injury or is running on fumes by the end of the year. Of course Grissom has been basically hurt for half of the season and hasn't even started a rehab yet.

I like the idea of a defensive SS like Kevin Newman in Arizona. I’m probably in the minority but with Anthony a year or so away I could see Abreu being a key piece in getting a cost controlled starter and look at Woo or Miller from the Mariners.

If we were to acquire Justin Turner from Blue Jays this is how the line could be. 1 LF Duran LHH, 2 SS Hamilton LHH, 3 RF O’Neil RHH , 4 3B Devers LHH 5 DH Turner RHH, 6 1B Casas LHH, 7 C Wong RHH, 8 2B Grissom RHH ,9 CF Cedena RHH. It’s a deep line up filled with speed, power, and guys who can get on base. This is a line up to give us the edge in the playoffs. Also bringing in Mata & Hendricks. Still need to add a SP who can compliment Houck at the top of the rotation. Evoldi shouldn’t cost too much in money and prospects which we have a glut of.

Turner has worse rest-of-season projections than both Refsnyder and Yoshida by both Steamer and Zips. He's also 39 and broke down toward the end of last season.
I know it would be nice to think the Red Sox could make themselves better by adding a position player at the trade deadline but it just isn't so.

“Projections” are just that. Right now look at his stats through the last 30 games,15 games and 7 games. He’s heating up. More walks than Strike outs, hits , average, those are facts. www.mlb.com/player/justin-turner-457759.

I think the right deal is probably something like Eovaldi for Mata (or a lower level solid upside pitcher) and Cespedes.
If we are in the right spot, we could do a deal like that and be fine.
Anyone know if Story could make it back by playoffs? I thought Sept was possible originally but haven't heard any update. If I thought that was possible, I probably would roll dice without SS trade and just play who we have. Might do that anyway.

I’m enjoying this year’s team but certainly not enough to give up Cespedes.

I feel like if you're trading for a guy to add to your team you ought to be more interested in what he projects to do than what he's done in the last week or month.

I agree about getting a defensive-minded SS to keep Rafaela in center and upgrade the defense at multiple spots. Newman would make sense, as would Paul DeJong, as would Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The cost for any of those guys should be very reasonable.

Rafaela is not playing shortstop because the Red Sox need him to play shortstop he’s playing there because they have four other good outfielders. Adding a shortstop only gives them less of an opportunity to play the 5 outfielders (the other four and Rafaela) they currently have.
I can see a case for upgrading Valdez’ spot with a lefty who can play both shortstop and 2B. I could see Nicky Lopez making sense if they think he can still be a good defender and if they don’t believe at all in Valdez. But I’d also be fine just going with Valdez and/or Grissom there, Valdez has been hitting really well for a while, so well that I think you should play that out a little longer.
In the end I land back on Incandenza’s argument that there just is no realistic way they can meaningfully upgrade the position players on this roster through trade at the deadline.

Doesn't Hamilton do just that? Yes. He stays on the roster. So does Romy. If you swap Valdez out with a 2B/SS with better defense in theory you can platoon that guy and Hamilton with Romy and Rafaela if you want to. Again I don’t really think this swap makes sense with how well Valdez has been hitting lately, but if the Red Sox think he’s going to fall off I could see the value of swapping him for a more versatile defender. A plus shortstop would also upgrade things a little bit over Hamilton who seems about average.

Someone mentioned this in the game thread (and beat me to the "get the man a plane ticket" comment ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ) but I want to see Tanner Scott on this team. He's a FA this offseason, so he shouldn't be insanely expensive. The bullpen is good, but a lights out LH reliever would be an upgrade.

Rob Refsnyder’s take (via Chris Cotillo’s article below): “There’s still a long ways to go before the deadline but we’re playing really well. Obviously, it’s Breslow’s decision and a front office decision but we’ve just got to keep winning series. I think Breslow has already shown he has gone out and gotten guys like Dom (Smith) and (Garrett) Cooper. He’s willing to make moves fast. He could have just stood pat and not done anything. He’s already shown the willingness to keep improving the roster.” www.masslive.com/redsox/2024/07/the-red-sox-are-for-real-and-theyre-deserving-of-trade-deadline-help-cotillo.html
