How about a huge round of congrats to the kid for getting called up to the Show!

Alex Speier was a guest on a recent WooSox broadcast and stated that Abreu was considered a replacement level player right now. (emphasis on the right now part).

Realistically, if Rafaela is in Boston's outfield next year then Rafaela, Duran, Refsnyder & Yoshida only leaves one spot for Verdugo, Duvall, Abreu or other. Unless Turner opts out and Masa ends up the DH?? (though, in that scenario, I would think they'd want to get another RH bat somewhere - likely in the OF) If Turner opts out you need 1B/3B specifically.

Hope they throw him right into the lineup tonight, see if he can stay hot and give them a spark.

Depending on what you do about middle infield, Urias and/or Reyes can probably handle that role fine. If either Devers or Casas were down such that you needed more than that, you'd be in deep trouble anyway. Definitely excited for Abreu - hope he can stay hot, offense could use a little spark.

Geez, I was vaguely aware he's been hot lately but didn't realize he has nearly a 1.500 OPS in August.

For some reason I had thought the scouting report on Abreu was that he was a bat without a position - I must have been conflating him with Valdez. Good to hear that he's thought of as being solid out there. I hope Duran's not out long, but a great opportunity for Abreu to force his way into the team's 2024 plans. Yeah you’re just thinking of Valdez. Abreu apparently pretty serviceable out in the OF.

The problem with using a middle infielder as the primary backup at first or third is that when they are used that way, you don't have a backup middle infielder on the bench. 6 outfielders is just too many.

6 outfielders isn't too many IF one of them happens to play above average SS

Think Yoshida to DH is the play for next season. Heck, maybe once JT gets shutdown we can start shifting in that direction this season. Going to be interesting to see how the offseason shakes out. Duran, Verdugo, Rafaella, Abreu all options for the outfield with Yoshida at DH. Perhaps it ends up being LF Abreu CF Duran RF Rafaella. Ideally Rafaella plays CF but not sure if Abreu or Duran can handle RF. Would imagine Verdugo is likely to get dealt.

He reportedly has the arm, so let's see what we've got. Also. I really hope folks here give the kid time to show what he's got and aren't coming into tonight thinking he's going to suddenly fix the offense or be the second coming of Dewey. Remember he struggled pretty mightily in July before exploding in August. Even this site suggests his ceiling is "a platoon outfielder." Let's all keep breathing, keep it constructive.

To date he's graded out quite poorly in LF and the sox have enough plus defensive outfielders that having him out there doesn't really make sense unless they feel Devers has to be moved to DH.

I've anointed Wilyer Abreu the Red Sox starting RF for 2024.

This. one of Casas, Yoshida and Devers NEEDS to move to DH. You can live with Casas at first for a while, so it’s either Devers or Yoshida that need to move to DH. they probably hope to get another couple of years from Devers at third, so Yoshida is the one who goes to DH.

Nah. They can shift. Rafaela to short, Durran over to center. Story to second, Urias to third. Works just fine. And if Yoshida, an outfielder, were the typical DH, it would be possible to carry another primary infielder on the bench. This year the two OFs on the bench made more sense because Turner was the DH.

I, for one, have no interest in watching Devers butcher scoops and attempt footwork around the bag. It might end up being more infuriating than his third base defense. Casas is certainly a bad defender, but he at least receives the ball well. This is off topic though. Thought Wilyer looked great at the plate his first night. I’m bullish on him eventually being a platoon bat!

No, this team sorely needs middle of the lineup power already and trading their 2nd best power threat who is cheap and controlled for the next 5 years and theoretically should only get better for a pitcher isn't a good idea to me.

Plus if we got to the point where Casas was going to move to DH for Devers, the easy solution is to trade Yoshida. His contract isn’t that big and I’m sure there’s a contender over the LT that would love to add his bat to their roster. I don’t think moving a bat with a cathedral ceiling like Casas is prudent for a team that only has one great long term bat besides him.
Anyway, back to Abreu. It would be really nice if he ended up being able to replace Verdugo in 2025. The walks and power give his bat a higher realistic ceiling IMO. Verdugo is looking like he’ll never develop the thump or patience he needed to be a star, but Abreu still needs to prove he won’t strike out 30% of the time too. I’m curious to see how his defense grades out in the MLB. I like his batted ball pattern in comparison to some higher rated prospects who have came to the MLB and struggled to hit for the power they showed in the minors (Alek Thomas, Brett Baty, etc).
