Hang on to your hats ! A win tonight and we are only 3 back of the Twins. With us playing them this weekend and the Tigers having hardly a cake walk at Baltimore, Mariners at Texas, we could have a four team wild ride for WC3 the final week. Draft ranking be damned, I want that 3 game series in Houston !!!

From a Twins fan buddy in Minnesota on this upcoming weekend: “please put us out of our misery”
They did do us a solid by DFA’ing David Ortiz, so sweeping them and ending their suffering is really the least we can do

Jasson Dominguez just dropped a fly ball in left field to give the Mariners a lead in Seattle. Wild miss

I think it's important to note off the bat, so people don't get defensive about their arguments, that your point is absolutely correct. . .except that the issue isn't only about spending in free agency. It's drafting, developing, trading and spending wisely in free agency that gets you the right players to win a WS. If we consider 2004, to those names you have to add David Ortiz, who was given an audition along with Jeremy Giamibi. You have to add talent developed and retained by the organization: Nomar, Nixon, Varitek, Lowe, even Youkilis. You have to add waiver selection Bronson Arroyo and snapping up Millar for cash. And trading for Scott Williamson. And the relatively unsexy FA signings of Timlin, Kapler, Pokey, Bellhorn, and Daubach. They had previously traded for and extended Embree. And of course, we traded for Pedro before extending him, as we traded for Schilling, as we even later traded for Sale. Our only "big name" FAs on the team by the end of the year were: Manny, Damon, and Foulke. (And I think Wakefield, technically? Or was he always just extended?) But regardless, those 3 guys don't get you a WS unless you have already wisely built a core you can add to as you go. (It was in the aggregate an expensive core, but it wasn't like it was simply purchased on the open market as they went.) So it's not simply a matter of spending on the latest FA darling (like Montgomery last year) to put any team over the top. But yeah, FA is a tool in the GM's bag, for sure. and there were no "salary caps" in either FA or the draft back then.. SO the comparisons are a bit disingenuous It's a completely different economic dynamic now than then as well. Teams were worth less than a billion dollars, and the stars weren't close to making 1/2 a billion in pay. Granted, at some point it's all monopoly money after a certain figure. I don't know, I want to be hopeful but there are soo many moving pieces that could go either so right or so wrong with our decision making the next few years. We do *need* a bonified ace who is A: Healthy, and B: Still has something in the tank. Just having one would make the outlook for the rotation look so much better, and we have enough parts with health to have a really competitive pen even if Martin and Jansen walk. They've been painful to watch offensively for the past month and a half, but I don't even worry about their numbers against left handers as much as I (beating a dead horse) loathe their defense and really feel like takes the air out of the team when they have gaffes. It feels like (even if it is not always true) that every big mental mistake or errant throw is followed up by a two-run homer. I'll be interested to see how their pitching strategy matures. Everyone was singing Bailey's praises early in the season when we were dominating on that side of the ball, the league adjusted and since then we've had long stretches of middling results, either because of strategy, or because guys like Houck, Crawford are throwing more than they have ever thrown in their careers to this point. It'll be interesting to see now that they have that experience under their belt how they prepare to hold up a little bit longer next year. As for the hitting strategy, I don't know what to do about that. The league rewards guys for slugging and power, but I miss having a balance between that and just being able to make contact and have productive outs when necessary. I don't think Fatse et all are doing anything specifically incorrect, and earlier in the season I loved when the Sox were pushing the envelope on the basepaths and wish they didn't go away from that pressure, to me that was exciting baseball, when guys were putting the ball in play and letting their athleticism be the deciding factor versus their strength. I'll go back to my old folks home now.

3-0 Seattle over the Yankees with Gilbert on the mound. It may not help us, but boy it’s fun to watch these jabronis lose

The calvary's coming! Twins lose again as Guardians clinch a playoff spot. It probably won't matter because of Los Tigres, but is kinda nuts that Minnesota really did implode enough that their Fenway series might sorta possibly theoretically mean something I'm out on Garcia, but I do think that there's a chance that if we brought Sims back he could be pretty good for us.

Unless I am misremembering something, Sims and Garcia have sucked ass. Penrod and Guerrero have not.

Maybe reading too much into it, but that doesn't sound like the kind of quote you give about a player about to receive a QO Or maybe Breslow is priming him to believe that he should decline the QO

Maybe reading too much into it, but that doesn't sound like the kind of quote you give about a player about to receive a QO Strangely, the form of the quote points away from a QO but the content of the quote points toward it. Like, yeah, it sounds like maybe they aren't going to QO him, but if it's such an enormous hole in the lineup if they lose him, why not QO him?
The other possibility is that Breslow thinks that the QO and O'Neill rejecting the QO are both foregone conclusions.

Tyler interviewing now. He's doing a nice job saying all the right things. I'm with others - with his agent, he is gone.
Actually works FOR us. You can extend the QO, and be sure it is rejected - which I think is best in the long run.

I’m sure they would love to have TO back in a vacuum, but the fact that they could sit on their hands all winter and still roll out an outfield of Duran/Rafaela/Abreu (with Roman in the wings) means they don’t have be to super aggressive about it, which you kinda need to be when it comes to a Boras client.

I like TON bombs more than just about any old fool, but he strikes out at well over 30% of his at bats. The homers may be hard to replace, but the contact won't be that hard.

Nice little knock for Sogard. That won't be on the roster in April, but I like having his glove available at the Woo.
