Kennedy has been a master in word salad the past few seasons, but I must admit that this caught my eye: “Even if it takes us over the CBT,” said Kennedy, referring to the first threshold of the competitive balance tax that stands at $241 million next year. “Our priority is 90 to 95 wins, and winning the American League East, and winning the division for multiple years.” Maybe it was stated before and I missed it, but this is the first time I’ve seen a team executive explicitly state that they’re willing to go over the CBT. It’s extremely hard to envision that they aren’t doing their damnedest to pull in Soto. I don’t think they will make an offer bigger than what Cohen will make, but I feel pretty good they’re making a tremendous effort to make it a very hard decision for Soto. EDIT: It’s also becoming more and more evident that this aggression to add payroll and make moves is what was promised to Cora when he signed the extension this summer.

And how does one tell when Sam Kennedy is "quite pleased"? Does his dullness score on the 1-10 scale drop from a 9.7 to a 9.6? He lies.....ohh wait, no, he always lies

Pretty sure there's only one agent who might have any cause to concern himself with the 5-7 year outlook of the Boston Red Sox right now. So I guess it's nice that he's telling his players that.
That's certainly a contrast to what we know about the Yankees/Soto meeting.

That's certainly a contrast to what we know about the Yankees/Soto meeting. As a MiLB message board participant, there is something deeply satisfying about seeing industry quotes recognizing the Sox future as one of the brightest in part because of the young talent coming up. We are not just a bunch of prospect hoarders! Our kids can play!

So Soto's leaving the Yankees.
And he's probably going to the crosstown rivals, the Red Sox, or at best, the team that just beat the Yankees in the World Series.

My errands: going to Market 32 and the post office
Papi's errands: calling Juan Soto and hyping him up

I agree that Boras has his goals and targets, but Soto isn't taking a haircut in real dollars just to satisfy Boras' ego. Agreed, but if Cohen goes to 700 and above the Sox will need to stay within 40 million to come close. I could see Cohen going bananas and bidding 700 - 750 if he must. If so ts hard to see the Sox stating in shouting distance if they tot to get up to 650 - 675 or even higher to be about even when taxes are factored in. If the Sox are in sniffing distance then if they get him that woukd be one helluva sales job. Yeah, this I could see as a possibility too. But my initial point was to question the subtext of Cohen's quote. What does he mean when he says he'll beat a deal by $50M? If he means literally "if the Sox bid is $620 then I'll offer $670" then that barely covers the tax and then it's just a matter of preference for Soto. If Cohen means he'll cover the tax and then add $50M then the offer goes from $670M to ~$710M and that's the scenario you've covered. Still probably the most likely scenario but the quote makes me wonder. Two very different possibilities and it will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few weeks.

Me thinks some writer has selective memory regarding Georgie. he took it as some kind of devine right that every FA should want to play for "his" NYY and to turn him down, or worse.. Flat out put publicly that they wouldn't play for the NYY (Rod Carew) would draw his wrath. No, I think this Klapisch charactor either doesn't remember georgie, or pulled this story out of his backside. 2 owners can remember in my years went to any ends to sign a player they coveted and that was Georgie and a guy who owned the T/Rangers maybe half dozen years during the 70's name of Brad Corbett.

My 92 year old grandpa had to go to the ER yesterday due to an aneurysm they discovered in his heart. I just visited him at the hospital and he asked if there was any Soto news lol. Red Sox fans certainly know what they want

Bob Quinn should have been shot out of a cannon for that. It was 86 years or predominately self inflicted wounds.

A week before Thanksgiving, the seemingly main obstacles to Juan Soto signing with the Boston Red Sox - Steve Cohen offering more money than God (I know there was a point made that NY tax structure might make 600+ million worth more in Massachusetts - do we have verification of that?)
- Soto (in theory) generally just really enjoying being a Yankee, playing with Aaron Judge & at Yankee Stadium, and ultimately not really caring that deeply about the Yankees having like the 18th ranked farm system or whatever
- LAD & PHI as wild cards
Obstacle #1 is still the thing I'm not sure any team will be able to get past, but I guess we'll see

It would be peak Sam Kennedy to manage fan expectations such that they're all bummed out after an offseason of extravagant spending because they thought they were getting specifically the top FA in 20 years.

Baerga posting Soto to Boston prop now, love to see it. I’m so happy that the best free agent ever is Dominican, the Latin media makes the offseason so much more fun.
