He's been signing an awful lot of guys. I wonder how many will be in the organization when ST breaks tho. Previously, it seemed as though when the team signed AAAA guys to deals, they would make one of the AA/AAA rosters, just maybe Bloom is different and if some of these kids show little to nothing, the Sox will cut them lose like believe should have been done in prior springs after a month look.
Agree there are a lot so far and some interesting. Have to wonder if holdovers.. Like Logan browning, Schellenger, Rio Gomez.. Even Jake Thompson will make it thru spring to make way for some at AA.

Someone hadn't thought of because 1) Been inneffective last 2-3 seasons and 2) Had issues keeping his attitude in check early on, which thought hurt him when he was at his best..
Chris Archer? Anything on him whisper wise from those in the space media world? Maybe bloom from his Tampa days could get him on some kind of MiLB deal with an opt out if not called up by a certain date??

I have a feeling that the Benintendi reports were a bit overblown. When we hear something will be done by the end of the weekend, and then nothing has happened weeks later, I start to question. I'm sure they talked with teams about a deal - they've talked with everyone about everything this offseason - but who knows how far talks actually got? It never made any sense to me. Pennies on the dollar for a guy making "only" 6m moved at absolute lowest point, then he was hurt to boot? Only reason he could have been moved in my thoughts was to clear salary for some OF replacement who would have cost $$ wise right at/over the salary cap and the Sox *HAD* to get back more than some AAAA piece in return and not eat every dime of Benny's deal, which wasn't gonna' happen. Long story short? Reason number 532 JBJ ain't wearing a RS uni..

Just where do the great ones like Manny Mota and Smoky Burgess rank if u don't mind? The Dodgers had two of them in Mota and Vic Davalillo on the same roster. The 1980 Phillies had a couple of good ones in Greg Gross and Del Unser on the 1980 Championship team. Guess you can do that when you don't have the DH in your league. Was going to throw one of my favorite, all time TV announcers in there with the Phillies listed in Tommy Hutton, but double checked and he had taken his superb PH bat to the Expos by 1980 from Philly (74-78). Davalio is a name hadn't thought of in many years

He's always been a tough cookie tho on RH hitter's with that funky, almost underhand delivery. I just looked and only 1 time since 2011 (2018) has the opposition's RHB hit over .200 vs him (.235) and may remember Ortiz had it tough vs him as a lefty back in the day if my memory is correct. His numbers are not truly awful vs LHH, other than long ball wise over they years and in that regard it could be frightening should the Yanks employ him at home. 1 for 6, HR, BB, 2 K. But the HR and the BB were his last two PA against him, so yeah, I guess he sorta had his number before the bomb (extra innings in Sept. 2014). Was the HR at Baltimore? Was going to post that thought Ortiz broke the O-fer with a blast, once again if memory served me, but was going to far into cobwebs of the past, like thinking it was at Baltimore if it was and do..

This is the same Chris Cotillo that started the "Brad Miller would be a fit" idea, something he could have discovered was factually incorrect (as he does not play 1B) if he'd hadn't been so lazy that he didn't look up him up. [...] You keep saying Brad Miller "does not play 1b." He played 1b (and other positions) in 2016 and 2018. You said earlier that since then "he hasn't tried" 1b. In 2019 and 2020 he played for three teams that had a regular 1b; the only one of those whose 1b did not play almost every game had another guy, a LHH, as 30-game backup. In 2017 when he played no 1b the Rays had two LHH 1b (just as in 2016 Brock Holt played no 1b because there was no need). Where does not "trying" come in there? "Hey, coach, put me at 1b instead of Goldschmidt"? You can say he's bad at infield defense wherever he plays, but saying "he does not play 1b" and "he hasn't tried" seems, well, "factually incorrect." Has there ever been a 6' 2" 3b or 2b or SS who could not figure out how to play 1b? What would that even mean? Why do you always use such extreme rhetoric? Can remember Billy Hall being around the game (and a favorite of Francona's in Boston) who played about every position, yet worth little with the glove at nearly all and nothing with the bat, except in garbage time. Realize a joke on tall 1b who can't/couldn't play 1b, but Frank Howard always comes to mind as 1 remember who had 2 left feet there. Adam Dunn another more recent example of exceptional tall brutality at the position. Howard and Dunn were both over 6'5.

The Chatham trade was made before Hernandez, so they need to clear two roster spots soon, and then 2 more for a CF and a Mitch Moreland-type. Springs
Pedroia to the retired list
Mazza, who contract should allow him to clear waivers, as Munoz did Brewer or Walden. That should be interesting.
Actually, I think they need to clear one more spot. The Chatham move will allow Perez to be added. They need 3 more for Hernandez, Richards, and now Ottavino. Brice keeps getting a pass. believe advanced metrics pump him up too much. He is what he is.. An AAAA reliever and Payamps can get waived also. Wilson can get replaced should emergency OF replacement be needed as well. There are multiple people who could be let go/waived not only those previously listed.

So... if the Yankees send money, but then the Red Sox send back money... how does that work? I mean, I assume the Sox would be required to give more than they got, lest they were just gifted a player? Weird. Funny how the days of dumping players for salary cap reasons work isn't it? Here Boston gets their closer, plus a pretty decent prospect all because another team is right on top of some cap, which shouldn't exist in the 1st place and would have to be penalized in various ways if they go over that line, so they give away a talented player, plus another talented prospect, pay 850k of his salary and will end up getting some nobody, or 5$ worth of loose change down the road in return. Reasons to do away with the cap, tho it's for another thread.

Barnes brain lock on closing is nearly as bad as was Tazawa's when he was given the opportunity. Think as it is now, Brasier is the better choice.
Colome never was a favorite of mine either to sign. Osuna for another reason. choices for a closer is running out however. If they do not intend to sign one and only go with another veteran, I can see Cishek as a possibility, long liked him and should be relatively inexpensive after being hurt. Jake McGee is another possibility. Hembree may decide to come back on a make good deal. Sean Doolittle may be primed for a bounceback.. There are still options out there.

You are probably right on JBJ however, I could see a scenario where they go over the luxury tax by a small amount to bring back Bradley. If they are competing for the playoffs it'll be worth it go over the tax. If they aren't competitive at the deadline trade whoever is needed to get back under the tax. Of course you sign JBJ and go a bit over the tax. Why did they sign Richards? To contend, as they have always said they plan to. So we stop adding necessary parts now?
Furthermore, going a bit over the tax limit probably pays for itself (in the long run) by tickets bought by people who suddenly wake up and realize that the Sox have not suddenly become a penny-pinching team (and are not running Baseball Ops out of the basement of a pizza place).
And if you contend, well, that's what it took. If it all goes south and you're not contending, you trade some folks to get under. Trading Richards and Barnes at the All-Star break would save you $7M.
Will they contend? I have never seen a Sox team with a rotation that collectively had such a large range out of outcomes. If they're right about the upsides of Houck, Pivetta, and Richards, and E-Rod, Eovaldi and eventually Sale all pitch as well as they have proven they are capable of pitching -- that's a crazy good rotation. I don't think I need to spell out the opposite (especially since manfred will do that for me! Said with affection). They found themselves in a position where the smart thing to do was to try to strike gold with upside guys. Last year they were limited to doing it with waiver claims. This year they've been able to shop more upscale.
And of course Benny, Dalbec, JDM, Arroyo, and maybe Devers' defense all have big outcome ranges among the position players. No wonder why the optimists and pessimists are living on different planets! It's going to be an incredibly interesting season.
That sign the JBJ horse now has had all the life snuffed out of it after the Richards deal. Chances were not good after the season, were really low after the Hernandez sign and almost gone totally now, even if Benny is moved for pennies on the dollar value wise. 1 more reliever (good one) a must and if some type of CF is required? It's not absolutely written in stone a lefty swinger has to be brought in, especially when it would require that person being over paid in both terms of dollars and years. Teams generally like to have some wiggle room at the deadline and I'm of the thought this team will require a lot of breaks to be good, throwing away cash and getting into back over the cap 1y early is wrong headed and would be a mistake, only way I see that happening is if by chance boston finds themself in contention in July and needs to acquire pieces, which predict will be the same hole they have now.. Relievers. Feel free to remind me of what have written. i own mistakes have made prediction wise and don't attempt to run away from them and myself? Think the Richards sign was not the worst Kluber fallback option, especially since if he does a decent job and they are out of it he will be worth something at the break with that 2022 option.

Richards cost more than I thought he would. Not too much in the way of "bargains" this offseason. The initial thought was there would be a ton of bargain basement when Brad Hand passed through waivers unclaimed. I'll guess he'll make more on the free agent market that when he could have been claimed. I would have thought you could get a pitcher like Richards for 5 million in addition to a guy like Happ for 8 - 10 million, which would have been preferable but the problem is that Richards wound up going for 10 million so they used 4.5 million to bring back Perez. I'd rather have had Happ in addition to Richards and have not spent $7 million on Kiké Hernandez. You probably can get Almora and Holt/LaStella for a combined $3 million or less. Still a good deal for the Sox. Richards, when healthy, can pitch. If he's past what was giving him health issues, he can be a good pitcher, and has value, whether the team is in contention or not. So at least the Sox have five identifiable starters for the upcoming season in E-Rod, Eovaldi, Richards, Perez, and Pivetta, and that explains why they have Andriese and Whitlock as swingmen, given the health track record and performance track record of those five starters. With what they got left I would guess we see a closer although they will wait and see if they can get Colome for $6 or $7 million or if they go after Jeffress and/or Kela. I'd say they're not going after JBJ anymore, which really makes me wish they would have dealt him in August last year, instead of getting nothing for him. Maybe you see a Mitch Moreland reunion although if the NL keeps the DH that might open up a slot for him somewhere either DHing or playing 1b and moving a NL 1b over to the DH slot. Other than the bullpen I think there's an endsight to what Bloom is doing. I don't think he's going to trade Benintendi, but it's not a non-zero thing. Noticed a couple posts in this thread asking for a Workman resigning.. I also think a closer..Of some type is what they need most now and Workman just isn't one, even in that 1 best year and have been a fan of his since he was drafted. Since he's found more success going with that big curve, the control (lack of) isn't going to let him paired with only a low 90's fb he has. Setup? You bet, but emergency closer only. I don't see Bloom, or anyone signing him to be the team closer and really don't see him striking it big this winter either.

I think people need to lower their expectations, they aren’t really in a position to compete for the WS quite yet. I think the goal this year is to put out a solid team that could possibly make the playoffs. I think you’ll see them look for longer term upgrades through trades. I expect the following season is when they’ll really be going for it. Healthy Sale (hopefully), healthy and prime ERod, and hopefully another acquisition. Maybe a big FA signee or two. They’ll be fine. They just aren’t going to do anything that could possibly hamstring them in the future when they aren’t realistically a top 2 team in the division. They don’t need to “buy now.” The window is not quite open yet I agree with what you're saying. I think most of us do. I know they have time to make more moves but seeing what's left over I have trouble seeing how they get a solid team that can make the playoffs unless they do the same format they had last year, but even so, it's hard to see how they're going to get a team that will be better than 4th place in the East this upcoming year. I think by Happ signing for 8m on a 1y deal elsewhere kinds of gives 1 more big clue Boston isn't going to spend much on #3-4 starters and that was only on a 1y deal. Those still wishing upon a star for Odorozzi, no better than Happ who will take a 3-4y commitment and more annual dollars just got another cold dose of reality. Had hoped they would spend a little on a rotational piece myself, but the pieces continue falling and so far.. Bloom must be holding out hope on a particular reclamation project.. Maybe 2 for the price to drop towards near nothingness. I can live with it should that happen and endure a .500< team. Ratings for the Nesn might slide more.

Agreed, but don't think that member was asking for that either as they haven't been really in the past few weeks if recall correctly.
What these latest splurges should do by both the NYY and Toronto is stop all the nonsense by some asking for Boston to sign all the mediocre, high priced talent that has been bandied about.. JBJ, Odorozzi.. They are not going to push this team past either of those and burning away cash.. Yet more reasons to pass on talents such as them.
it wouldn't hurt me, nor shock me if they looked to trade talent much better than Benny now if can get good, controllable kids for 5+ seasons back.

According to MLBTR, Chatwood signed with the Jays as a reliever for 3m and incentives could push it to 5m on a 1y deal. Wasn't this supposed to be a winter of fiscal sanity? Guy with -0- control, throws hard, but has that "spin rate" i suppose.. Which has so far never helped him succeed.. Make him valuable?
This is one of my classic examples of relying on analytics over both eyeballs and common sense.

Maybe another organization is best for a chance. Last year it seemed to me there was reason, or the best of opportunities to call him up and they didn't, so there is something.. perceived or real the Sox organization does not like about him.
Hold steady on why he was cut from the 40 many at this point with multiple fringy (at best) relievers occupying spots. Even if the FO had little faith in Chatham, there are 2-3 relievers taking up spots on the 40man roster no better than the mass they have on non roster, make good contracts and could be cut free and replaced.. It just made no sense to do this at this time. Maybe later if they had some middle IF better (2b), but now when there isn't anyone who can REALLY be counted on?

I liked him and not only because when talked with him that 1st summer after he was drafted, with a cast on his arm about how badly he was wanting to play and how much he loved the game either in Ft Myers. The kid showed he could hit at a cpl levels after healing from the wrist injury and looking over the 40 man roster.. With multiple players who really have no buisness being near it I wonder what goes on inside the heads of a MLB fron office sometimes.. Is it only going from analytics and paying -0- attention to anything else? What this guy "might" be able to do according to do to hype schedule A,B,and C some supposed guru has typed up with his black, plastic framed glasses.. staring over a computer and has no comprehension of what entails using a pair of eyeballs to take in the eccentricities of the game make it vary?
My God I'd love to hear how Rac Slider and Joe Morgan think how the game has devolved.

Those are non factors unless/until more injuries happen, like Norm explained above. Rodriquez, Eovaldi, Perez, Pivetta, Houck and whoever other veteran arm they bring in will be ahead of that motley crew of AAAA guys and Pivetta + Houck are here now when they were not last April 1st, so already +2.
Imagine will end up with a handful of starts from the crowd u posted, but just maybe after the AS break Mata will be ready, further pushing them all back.

Perez wasn't the problem last year. The problem last year was our utter lack of depth. Perez is reliable and will take the ball every fifth day and will keep the team in the game. I like this move too, especially if it means we have 1 more starter signing as well. Bloom may well be finding out that questionable FA starter costs are running more than thought and guys.. Like Odorizzi, who a lot of people like wanted signed on this board, Walker, whom I'd like to see in Boston are going to cost more than thought. Neither are worth more than say 10m over 2-3y max, wouldn't go that long on Walker (3y). Going back to someone like Perez, who shocks me they managed to sign for a tad less than amount they just recently declined him for is a solid move on their part. Throwing good money after questionable guys long term is not smart however.

I love both Rocker and Leiter. However, I really think when drafting this high it's hard to pick an arm. I have flashbacks to Trey Ball and while I realize no pick is ever a sure thing, I think college hitters are far easier to project than college arms and aren't nearly as volatile. I agree totally. Being in Florida, I went to Port Charlotte the day Trey Ball debuted. I walked away very unimpressed and hoping I was wrong. Poor velo, poor command, and his secondary pitches were flat. To me the top 3 are HS position players. #1 is Lawlor, #2 is Meyer, and shocking to most of you....#3 is House. Castillo has no position and I can't see any other positional player worth our 4th pick. Don't think it's necessarily an arm, but what kind of arm. taking a guy.. These days, or last 15-20y with a #1 pick who throws junk with a 1st round pick is foolish, or has been my opinion for years. Burn out as a SP and mostly of -0- use as a reliever. Some guy who has any type of decent velocity a chance to be useful reliever, but Brian Johnson, Trey Ball, kris Johnson never had any to begin with. I'd rather take a wild card shot on a pitching than the Fuentes, Cannon and other "safe" types. Could go a lot longer with this list on just 1st rounders. As for this being the highest pick in several decades Steve? Not picking on you at all in this reply, only some awful choices of the team.. I would be happy they select a power pitcher at the top of the draft. My worries are it will be yet another middle infielder, which am always against taking with choices 1-3 in the rule 4 draft.

The New York Yankees and free agent second baseman DJ LeMahieu are finalizing a new contract, as MLB.com’s Jon Morosi first reported Friday. The deal, which is agreed upon, is for six years and $90 million, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Yankees stole him..15 million per. He must really have wanted to play in Yankee Stadium. Outside of playing in that hitter's paradise called Coors field where he started, i cannot think of a better stadium suited for him currently existing. Fenway was not for him, as some here have called for. Old Tiger stadium perhaps, with it's over hanging boxes in RF may have also helped. Not saying he wouldn't have hit in any stadium, he would have, but his somewhat power numbers will be somewhat artificially inflated in NY. Wise choice on his part and he knew it. Shame Boggs didn't take Fenway into consideration when he left and remember all the hits off the wall he lost which became easy outs in that grand canyon at old yankee stadium.

One year 6 million for Archie Bradley. Good deal for the Phillies. Could the Reds not find a taker for Bradley or the Cubs for Schwarber? Both signed deals worth more than they we due in arbitration. Seems like they could have at least gotten a lottery ticket prospect. But yeah, nice addition for the Phils. Can't look at those in hindsight like that. Market has changed some, not quite as moribund as thought. believe Perez and Hand might come out ahead to name couple more who were let go early on. Not that believe it's one of those spend wildly days, where the BJ Upton's, Tyler Chatwood's and Heyward's of the world were given crazy money based on hype alone, but the 2nd and some 3rd tier guys are not going to have to resort to holding out a cup and begging, which think some in the front office's thought might happen.

Not "money aside." Every year is another year a pitcher can blow his arm out. The reason to go back is if the market is depressed and you're not getting the money you are worth. I believe he was referencing the events that took place yesterday without turning this into a political discussion. Are some expecting a few fans to rush the field if the team doesn't manage to win, or management doesn't "buy" the guy some want?
