Most all the above mentioned blunders are Haywood Sullivan ones.. Jenkins, Cleveland, El Tiante.. sullivan was a really nice guy, but when he bought the team (along with mrs Yawkey and Buddy leRoux) he really got pretty cheap and seemed to lose touch with reality. Another thing was year Tiant was allowed to leave, believe year before he had just signed away Mike Torrez from NY, so Georgie might have thought revenge was in order.

If the O's were looking for a pie in the sky DH/poor fielding 1b, they could always sign Alvarez to another milb deal. He has a history and is barely past 30.

Liked the write-up in the Athletic article regarding GG and who got them, who maybe should have, then mentioning Sandy Leon led the AL in DRS if that would have been the measure used.
Rare to see poor offensive players get the award, but it does happen. Gordon this year.

Organization doesn't have Ted Williams any longer to work with power hitters who strike out a ton. Reference Butch Hobson, who Williams worked with tirelessly on that issue.
Agree the K problem will do nothing but get worse the higher he gets in the system. AFL is probably the most advanced pitching he's seen and this is the result, I take that over being tired as an excuse.
He's probably got some kind of MLB future, but really needs to shorten his swing.

Kevin Boles was always very accommodating at the various Pawsox fan events. He answered all the questions the fans would ask. I hope he gets a major league position. I've told the story on the podcast, but Boles tore into me once in the manager's office in Manchester. It was completely deserved so I hold zero grudge, but it's just funny, because we then had a perfectly pleasant interview. Best of luck to him. Never heard the podcast, but think sometimes it's where the question is asked. When ur on their turf and regards a player, it can cross a line with them perhaps sometimes. Say this because Kotch got me a cpl years back like u describe when asking something may have been too much, then a little while later? Walked over and answered. Don't remember Rac, nor Joe Morgan ever jumping me over questions. Joe was good at just changing the subject.

Just for fun, from that link: Take it that's Papi's sweet ride in the background?

Trey Ball next big bat in the org Maybe it works out for him and best of luck. Devon Fisher has been doing ok in reverse position change.. Catcher to reliever and Weems not bad same thing. Never know how it will work out, sometimes these guys will turn it around you know? 1st I remember was my friend Danny Weppner, many-a-decade ago, who was a really good LH pitcher that hurt his arm and tried to come back as an OF in the Sox system.. had to throw that in..

Howlett's going to make an enormous jump on 9/1. Like, the kind of jump you guys always want us to make with guys and we don't. Per Ian, Northcut's HR was a bomb. Gotta love how easily he jumped into pro ball with a ridiculous number of xbh and not too many strikeouts. Anyone catch anything about his defense? We only made 1 short trip to Ft Myers this summer for 2 games and Howlett was at 3b only 1 (DH other game). As remember.. Only 2-3 balls hit to 3rd. 1 he backed up on when didn't think should have, but did make a strong throw, which was too late to catch the runner unfortunately. Not enough of course to lay any kind of judgement defensively on the kid, but he did look like he knew what was doing at the plate.

Chavis has come back from his suspension on a mission. Strikeouts more manageable at Portland at around 25% and has hit .462 his last 10 games.
Go Mikey go...

I also like seeing the Ivy league guys make it Chris. Was a time, especially FB when it was considered almost normal for them to go professional but it's so rare now.

With numerous players coming off the D.L. before 9/1 (alledgedly), whom can be optioned?: Renda Workman (option already burned in '18) Brasier Velasquez Butler, out of options, will be waived Thornburg, just passed 5 years service. No options. Workman's option should still be fine. He was called up for an injury replacement (Sale) which was changed in the last CBA. Edit: That is. No 10 day wait period before recall to burn the option.

Felix Hernandez got shelled last night by the Rangers (11 runs, 7 earned) and his spot in the rotation is in jeopardy. It hurts seeing a once amazing pitcher realizing that he became mortal after his velocity left him. I watch a lot of Mariner games and he has looked truly awful this season most of his starts. The slider doesn't even really have the bite it once did and as you mentioned? The FB now sits 90-91mph tops. He's a shell. King's court still sits along the 3b line in yellow shirts, holding up those crown placards and screams loudly each game he starts at Seattle, but wonder if they will even be out there next season as they have for so many previous ones.

Actually his name is Walt Hriniak. I believe his predecessor as a hitting guru was the old K.C. Royals hitting coach Charlie Lau. Who mentored George Brett . As far as I recall from back in the 70's and 80's Sox teams, Hriniak came along in the 80's and yes Boggs was his primary disciple but I could have sworn that Dwight Evans towards the latter end of his career became a disciple as well. I could have sworn he adopted that funky hitting stance that was the rage back them. Just saying. Don't mean to belabor the whole discussion here. Long time ago and agree it's not worth a bunch of discussion. Hriniak came to the team not as the hitting coach, but did work with some of the players on hitting and the Lau theory. Later on, when it proved viable to more and more players he was promoted to hitting coach, but i do remember Yaz especially using that distinctive toe tap well before the 80's and easy to see when Evans began using it.. He began to hit after nearly 10 seasons of mediocrity and different batting stances, sometimes changing each at bat during a single game.

Here is something interesting perhaps just heard on Mariners broadcast..
Seattle still has 10 games left vs both Oakland and Houston along with 3 vs the NYY.
Seems like an awful lot of games left this time of year vs division foes when only around 50 games entire season to go.

I love the new era of launch angles. I'm so glad Ted Williams won over Walt Hreniak. Holy cow did I hate Hreniak. Ruined Gedman. That style had virtually the entire late 70's Sox team using it, except for Jim Rice and Evans might not have ever reclaimed his career without it. Yaz even used it. Geddy just might have been an outlier.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen that he loses velocity after only a couple innings. Typically that would be a reason to move a guy to the bullpen, would it not? I hesitate to think that about Shawaryn because he’s still had good results with his stuff so far. But when he gets to the majors, is he going to be able to cut it as a started with reduced stuff after the third inning? It was the same thing with Workman most will remember. He'd come out in the 1st with 93-95mph, then it would be 91-93mph tops from then on before he had the TJ surgery and was starting. Think Shawaryn needs to be groomed into the relief role now. many similarities to Workman.

I'm not impressed with Meadows tbh, a full year of average to below average production in AAA. WHen he got called up, he was on absolute fire at the mlb level for two weeks which was an outlier in his production, and then plummeted back to earth. Really don't think he's anything special, and his defense has been rated horribly in CF in a SSS. The shine is also off Glasnow; I think the Pirates made a good trade if they are low on those two guys. Trade them while they still have value. Future closer IMO. Remember watching him during ST several games and few this season. He can be filthy. Think TB may have this in mind also. Guy sits upper 90's and 5 more years of control for a mid rotation starter. Think glasnow was more important get rather than meadows in the deal.

I can't help but think about Nomar when I hear Red Sox #5 as if it is really his number. Hard to imagine that number belonging to somebody else. I'm sure Kinsler in his brief time here will do the number proud. Natural reaction, I think of Dewey when I see Price with #24. The number that should be retired, along with Tiant's #23. What is the FO going to do when Pedey quits playing? Odds are he's not going to have hall numbers.

Wow the Rays did very well for Chris Archer. I guess the Bucos think they have a decent shot. At least, the Pirates have Archer under control for quite a while. Boy the Orioles know how to blow up a team quick, but they really had no real option. Their team, and organization, needs a facelift. Maybe a lobotomy! Whatever it requires to cut "Angelos" out would probably fix the patient for awhile Dr.

Thad Ward has only allowed 1 ER in his last 14 innings. And I just noticed, he's from Fort Myers. Amount of guys they took with Central Florida to South Florida roots this time was maybe the most ever?

Great, now we're going to have to rehash the 2013 1st round pick every time we play the Rays. If you live in the Ray's market area and forced to listen to Dewayne Staats when Boston plays them, you will 100% certainly be hearing that every time Boston plays them. No other announcer, other than Phil Rhizzuto ever got/gets on my nerves as bad as Staats. The classical definition of a homer.

Antoni Flores and Bramdon Perez in the lineup for the GCL Red Sox. Both Howlett and Northcut as well. Maybe Kotch reads the threads

I'd just as soon make a deal (if it happens) to include larger prospects that gives away Pomeranz, the remaining 3m on his salary and any type of reliever from whatever team they are dealing with. Pomeranz is costing the team wins and has been all season and seems to will be for the future. Even johnson can go 4-5 innings.
Doubtful Pomeranz going to get back to any resemblance of what he was last season in 2 months time and unless can bury him on some kind of injury at Pawtucket? He really needs to go away, fairly short SP on or not.
