What everyone is taking for granted is the commissioner has to give the ok and sign off on these deals. What if he just all of a sudden decided to let any team attempting to pull this stunt go the normal 5% and then NOT go any further, or go just enough to lose a couple of 1st round picks and then stop signing off? Remember those Venezuelan deals Manfred undid a few months back that were mere formalities before? Well..

It might also be helpful to remind folks that draftees, their friends and families could be lurking on these pages. I am most interested in their skills on the field and how they can help the Red Sox. That's a good point.. Also current prospect families.. Some met last year and took multiple pictures of messaged over the off season here and DL'd some up close that had posted here last year of their son.

Is money for continued college after the playing career is over still considered cap free under the new CBA?

Not trying to make a big stink about this, but I'm seeing the words "blessed" and "God" pop up an absolute ton. Its almost as if guys needed to have 60 grade religious identification to be drafted by us this year. Whatever floats your boat though, I'm not hating. Have noticed several times last few days posters taking somewhat dim views of picks thanking God for something. Just say the said pick wrote "Praise be Allah" instead.. Would there be the same fuss?? My point is this is a sports board and I know many of us like to come here and mostly thru the year just read it and don't post for this reason.. can the politiking please go??

Of the late round flyers, I'd love to see the Sox throw a little extra to sign up Oraj Anu. When I read the thing about him impressing scouts, then disappearing back to home schooling in the Bahamas, I was intrigued. The video shows an athletic looking kid who looks comfortable swinging from either side of the plate. The thing I found that is most interesting is his parents. Father played football at Miami U. Kid's mom though was an elite sprinter who was on multiple Olympic teams for Bahamas. She claims the kid runs the 60 in 6.5 seconds on a bad day and can run it in 6.2 seconds! If that's true, at 6'2 220, that is freak show level athletic ability. www.prepbaseballreport.com/news/FL/Speed-Is-In-Oraj-Anus-DNA-1296438750Might be more of a risk giving extra money to a kid who has trained in a non competitive environment over another potential signee who has. remember several years back a guy named Engel beltre. Not a lone example either. Trainers, possibly parents also can have these kids do nothing but train to hit, run 60's.. Then know little else about the game. Beltre was like that. Hitting meatballs from a BP pitcher isn't like in a competitive environment and I'd be wary of this more than another who has.

After what they've already drafted? I think this an unreasonable draft expectation. And just because a player isn't i the BA Top 200, doesn't mean he has no upside. Also, Day 3 is where teams often get a lot of there important org guys. Agree and then never know.. A Kyri washington, Pennington, Dubon, Asuaje type could fall into the Sox lap for 100k.

Every draft makes that itch worse for these guys to sign and some to get assigned to Ft Myers to get down and see some right away on our 1st trip of the summer..

Agree with poster above.. Loving this draft with all the power arms drafted early on, even if 1-2 are developed as relievers. This seems to me the best draft in recent years talent wise, other than 2011 and 2014.

The guys with some gas have a legit chance at being a useable reliever in the future. Taking people with that so cliche "4 pitch mix" which is cue for no fast ball are mostly relegated to minor league depth when they fail and this team has had many of them over the years drafted in rounds 1-2.

He was 90-92 and touched 93mph in his 1st GCL start last season. Was there with my wife. Threw multiple curves also that looked pretty good over 2 innings he worked as remember.

Baldwin was a nice kid too when saw him at Ft Myers. Vocal during games, tho played 3b every time saw him during his GCL time. Chatted with him (with help of trainer once) a couple times.

I am from just outside of Milwaukee, but grew up in Florida. I was a baseball card junkie as a kid and my fav player was Jim Rice. 77-79....a few of the best baseball stats you will see. Imagine Rice hitting a juiced ball. Yikes. And yes I have a few of his RCs. Also a huge Florida Gator fan and love any of the prospects from there. Mark You ever get to see Jim Ed play for Winter Haven in '71 if memory serves correct? He played here with the old orange domed citrus showcase backdrop that can be seen on so many of those old baseball cards.

Boards can be such hostile places sometimes (not saying this one is) and think some might prefer using social media sites over blogs past several years. Also? those same devices and on the go use has led to some of the "testy" users now around on sites.
I'll keep sending in any pictures of GCL players you might want whenever make one of our multiple yearly trips and post anything see from the games wife and I take in. Don't think 1st trip (probably mid July) will have many of the draft picks, but hopefully will have some good kids to watch over 3-5 days we stay.

See Ian with a tweet where Devon Fisher was throwing 92-3 w a slider and change. I don't tweet.. facebook, any of that stuff. Saw Fisher several times last year at Ft Myers and he was able to locate his FB sometimes, but his slider was pretty flat.. Anyone this year seen enough to update?
My wife and his mom chatted several times also and I liked the kid somewhat as a prospect from what saw.

Thanks Chris.. Tomlin.. get him mixed up with brent Strom for some reason from old padres.. I do actually remember both, tho have never mentioned to Dave I remember his playing days with SD. He's one with some humor would miss from Fort Myers on our 2-3 trips each summer.

Did Dave Strom retire, or did he get a job as a coach with another organization? Curious.. Always liked chatting and talking the game with Dave when went to Ft Myers to catch the GCL Sox.

HAHAHAHAH oh man those first two look like mugshots for public intoxication and indecent exposure. Who signed off on that cockeyed monstrosity? Those were shots of Harry Carey, drunk without his glasses on.

Looks like fair chance GCL Sox could play a playoff game, or several much closer to me than Ft Myers (about 150m) in Orlando, Clearwater, Bradenton.. I'd take any of those venue drives

Chatham who was off to a dismal start has raised his average 30 points and hit 3 HRs in the last 2 games. Who knows, maybe the thumb was bothering him. He sure hinted as much when first drafted and was in that pretty large "0-fer". Wife and I kept on cheering for him to get that 1st hit, we stopped him on the way to the bus after a game at Sarasota think it was and he pointed to the thumb. It was pretty obvious he was implying was impairing the swing IMO.

Wife, son and myself made the trip to Ft Myers early yesterday mostly for the purpose of catching Groome's start today. Talked to him yesterday and asked to see if he was pretty sure was still getting the start today and he said yes, so we stayed for sure.
He sat 92-3 and touched 94 according to the Sox ppl I asked shooting the game. it was played on a minor league field and not the Main field this time at Fenway South.
Changeup seems to need a tad of work. Slows body and arm down on, tho he did record an out with one in the 2nd. Curve looked pretty sharp, tho he threw mainly fastballs today.

Would really appreciate it to cease the insults on Kotch, who have known since his days of managing the old Winter haven Red Sox back in the early 80's to some extent and he's a very knowledgeable baseball man and friendly.
My wife and I will both greet him and say goodbye to both him, as well as Dave Strom each and every trip during the summer, it's not as if either of those 2 are some kind of "stiff's" or anything. Have seen Strom especially in action nearly every trip and know he's a motivator and Kotch wouldn't have kept a job managing for well over 30y continuously if he wasn't a fine manager in his own right.
Believe the GCL club has a fine coaching staff overall and is in good hands.

Jason Groome added to the GCL roster. Jordan Weems and CJ Chatham promoted to Lowell. I'm not really expecting much from Weems, but I really enjoy watching positional player to pitcher transitions. I'll be rooting for him. Weems pitched one of the GCL games went to. Don't remember a ton with regards to his off speed, just that his control wasn't that great and his FB was pretty good and like 94-5.

What on earth is up with CJ Chatham? Now 0 for 16. You have to think part of it was rust, part is poor luck. You just do not expect a college player to struggle like that in the GCL, even despite the layoff. Not worried or anything. Just weird as hell. Thought mentioned this when 1st got back Chris.. His hand is still bothering him.. Maybe should have pm'd instead of posting.. Had fairly long conversation with CJ in Sarasota after game when he went down swinging one AB with bases loaded. I was yelling "let's get that 1st pro hit" every AB he came up the 4 days was there. Mentioned that to him also if it bothered.. Of course he said it didn't matter, but looked at hand and said it was still bothering him. He wasn't playing entire games then and noticed hand would be wrapped when he came out in dugout during games he came out. Please feel free to delete this if it's something should have pm'd like the other.
