In his August 14th chat, Kieth Law had this response: Tim (FL) Jon Denney is off to a slow start for BOS....is there a swing/mechanical flaw there that might have led to him falling in the draft?
Klaw (2:54 PM) Post-draft, I had a long chat with a few scouts who saw him in late May. All said his strength was gone - it looked like he'd had mono or something and lost everything, his power, his arm strength, his will to live. That's why he fell. That's quite the change from a few weeks ago when KLaw called him the best catcher in the draft. Has anyone heard this stuff before

I talked with Jon this week and there'll be something up at ESPN Boston midweek where he kind of talks about this. Said that he was getting pitched around so much at the end of his HS season that his approach is screwed up right now.

I'll be looking forward to the ESPN piece. Relatively speaking, during the two draft day periods, I had about equal enthusiasm and hopes for Denney as I did for Swihart and that was pretty high.

As long as he doesn't eat chicken during a game, why should we care?

Don't get me wrong, he's a definitely comes off as an arrogant D-bag, but this story was kinda funny. The part about Britton last year amused me the most "When asked for his license, Britton gave the police a debit card."
This is obviously not good news, but Denney is young. He is sure to be disciplined, and hopefully the experience humbles him and he can get back on track next year.

Jon Denney is a real POS. Read the Yahoo story and see how little respect he has for society and the police. There's a heck of a lot more in play here than alcohol. He needs to be told by the Red Sox that he's on his last legs with the organization. I really can't believe the crap he pulled with the police. He also needs to be told to stop drinking - he's clearly a drunk.

What a jerk, pissing away his talent like this. espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/30409/ball-denney-adjusting-to-pro-life-in-gclLooks like he's moved on from trying to catch fish.... From Chris Hatfield's 3/11 post I would hope he is sent to Lowell.

The kid appears to be a drunken punk. The drinking can be addressed but after hearing what he said to the police, I have no idea what the Sox can do about his attitude.
Question: Does anybody know if the Sox can release him and seek to recoup at least some of his bonus because of this incident. This kid clearly doesn't have much character and the Sox should not want him around the other prospects.

When I was young I was punk, heck I was probably worse than Denney and Britton combined. I'm not the same man today, and I'm thankful I never found myself in jail or killed someone. Reading some of the things he said is pretty tough, definitely inexcusable remarks that shed some light into who he is...I know he was drunk but I still think it shows that he may be a little self centered and arrogant. Sometimes a little bit of an ego is good for an athlete but no one likes an ahole.
I hope he is punished, I hope he doesn't see playing time from this in 2014, but I also hope he learns and grows from this experience and possibly we see in the future why the Sox drafted him.

I agree with this. God knows I wouldn't want to be judged based on some of the decisions I made when I was younger. His attitude sucks and needs correction, but I doubt his character issues are beyond repair.

The less bad way to read all this is that Denney was overly praised and empowered in his home town and is going to have to eat some humble pie not just after this incident but in order to make it far in the pros.
This comes through not just in his arrest, but also in the way he talks about "just working on [his] hitting now". He's clearly going to run into more hurdles on his way up, and the way he approaches them is going to determine his future.
On the other hand, it's entirely possible he's just an entitled jerk who won't ever be able to reach his potential because he can't recognize where he's human and needs to improve himself. Talent only takes you so far.

Breaking news, 19 year old baseball player is a jerk.
Plenty of players have these types of issues. Some of them grow up, some don't. We'll see. In the meantime, I hope Denny likes XST.

Dude, Johnny Gomes thinks he's worth 20 wins to a team, likes to drop-kick Coors Lite cans into the stands, and he qualifies as one of the good guys in the game.
