Trade Jon Lester?
|
Post by amfox1 on Jul 25, 2014 14:45:03 GMT -5
Urias (the next great Mexican baseball star) is not being traded.
I think Pederson is obtainable. For now, I'll stick with my proposal of Lester, Drew and Breslow for Seager, Chris Reed, Kemp and $40mm. Maybe you can get Seager and Reed for Lester alone, but Drew and Breslow are parts they need this year and trading Kemp would clear a spot for Pederson.

I think it's borderline irresponsible to trade for Kemp.

I think it's borderline irresponsible to trade for Kemp. Agreed I want no part of Kemp. It would kinda defeat the point of dealing Lester to avoid overpaying him cause even if LA kicked $40m in, we'd be left playing a guy who's been below replacement level this year $70m for 4 years. Not attractive unless we get a great package from them

Red Sox GM Ben Cherington hasn’t made a formal offer to Jon Lester since the four-year, $70MM pact the team offered in Spring Training. Cherington wouldn't be doing his due diligence if he didn’t at least listen to offers for his ace, in order to gauge whether or not a club like the Dodgers would offer up a top prospect like Joc Pederson or Corey Seager, Olney continues.

I would add Andrew Miller in place of Breslow and negotiation rights to Lester before a deal is done like we did with Agon and see if we can get Joc Pederson and Corey Seager along with something else like Reed, Windle, Sweeney, or Garcia. I'd do it. doubt it will happen though.
Lester, Miller, Drew, 6 mil
for
Pederson, Seager, and Reed/Windle/Sweeney/Garcia

He could stay, he could go. We might have seen Jon's last start as a Red Sox.
Discuss.

Looks like the Lester trade market is open.

If he's open to returning, there's really no reason to keep him. Sell, sell, sell. Anyone with a better knowledge of other systems want to list some potential trade partners and targets?

At this point, as much as it pains me to type this, they HAVE to trade him (assuming they get better value than simply letting him walk away).
The fact that he is open about be willing to return to the Sox even if he gets dealt is a good thing.
The fact that the Sox have absolutely no desire to pay him anywhere near what he's worth (baseball-wise, hard to say anybody is worth $150 million in real life) is not a good thing.
The odds are very good he's not coming back next year anyways, so at this point you have to get at least one top notch prospect, preferably a top notch OF prospect and a top notch pitching prospect - that's probably a little pie in the sky as they'll probably only get one of them.
So if by some miracle the Sox got a great deal for him and turned around and re-signed him it would be win-win with one exception - the Sox would have to surrender a draft pick (the good news for the Sox would be that the way they're going their first pick would be protected). I guess that would be a good price to pay for progress.
Emotionally it's hard to see Lester in another uniform, even if it was temporary. Unfortunately, I think we'll be getting used to seeing him in another uniform. I just hope it's not pinstripes. My guess is that the Yanks and Theo's Cubs will be battling for his services in the offseason. He's not going to take a ridiculous low ball offer from the Sox. If the Sox were in the neighborhood, I suspect he would, but they won't even be in the same state.

If the Sox let Lester get away, he never will come back. The Yankees will outbid everyone for him. The best thing the Sox could do is to offer him market value now and sign him. He is worth more as a pitcher with the Sox than what the Sox might get for him, or the draft pick. And Lester with the Yankees next year will be devastating to the Sox.

I like the Pirates as a trade partner. Hopefully it happens.
I would like for him to stay but it's pretty clear they aren't going to come to an agreement. The next best option is a trade.

Players have to be with a team all season to offer a QO. If he's legitimately OK with being re-signed after traded I don't see why the Sox wouldn't go that route.

Think they'd be more willing to overpay him in the off-season if we end up trading him? I would have to think that getting a prospect or two at the deadline would be worth whatever hometown discount he could've been willing to give (which likely would be out the window following any trade).

I have always considered the reds as a team that should step up and trade for Lester.

Lester's claim that he will be open to coming back if traded is perfectly consistent with his apparent personality.
The only reason not to trade Lester now is the draft pick that other teams will have to give up if they keep him all season. For a long deal, that cost is spread out and less of a factor, but it is a factor. History suggests it won't matter much to the Yankees, of course.

I think there is a chance the Sox could be willing to offer him more money in the offseason because right now it's hard to really gauge his value to this team without knowing what we have with the kids in AAA. I think trading him now for good value (as well as dumping Peavy) and giving the likes of Ranaudo, Webster and Workman an extended shot at starting (while also clearly space to promote Owens and Johnson) would be the ideal situation. While we will only get a limited look at the young guys it will give us a much better idea of what we have going forward. If it is clear that these young guys aren't what we hope and are desperate for a front of the rotation starter then we bite the bullet and pay the man in free agency (or a similar alternative). If they do well and show promise for the rest of the season then maybe the value of Lester is lessened and we can move on. Either way the worst case scenario is Lester leaving as a free agent and only getting a comp pick for him in a year where we aren't competitive.

I would like Glasnow to head a package and really want Bell too but if we build it around an OFer though I like Pederson. I didn't realize he's only four months older than Bell and I really like the idea of him taking over in RF after Vic leaves. He hits in a hitters park but I think he could have a good OBP and be a 20/20 guy who May could flirt with a little more while being that second CFer in our OF. It will be about who wants him more.

If they keep him and sign him in the off season, they effectively lose an opportunity for a pick. If they trade him now it might even increase the likelihood we resign him in the off season. And it is clearly good for Lester at least financially.

Ok so Reds and Nationals.
Reds feature a great pitcher named Robert Stephenson, who features a plus fastball and a potential plus curveball. Constantly ranked in the top 20. Also, Jesse Winkler, an outfielder with good power has been shooting up the boards(recently put in the top 50 in BP I believe). The Reds seem to be the most ideal trade partner because they have the most need(crazy division with teams who have much better systems).
Nationals. It's all Lucas Giotto and AJ Cole. Giotto is untouchable and Cole would need to be coupled with Michael Taylor to be worth our time. I really don't see the Nationals.
One thing about Lester, the front office may be worried that dealing him would upset less thoughtful fans then ourselves. What I call an "average fan", who probably doesn't even know we have gems like Blake Swilhart and first hear of Mookie Betts when he arrived in the majors. Anyway, I personally think trading LACKEY is the better move. I think Lackey for Jesse Winkler from the Reds would be a good deal for us and also realistic.

Either way the worst case scenario is Lester leaving as a free agent and only getting a comp pick for him in a year where we aren't competitive. I also imagine that if they could acquire prospects at other positions of need, they'd be more willing to sacrifice future flexibility for Lester as well, and might up their offer. After all, if we deal him, we can get a better pick next year, a couple of top-100 caliber prospects (most likely) and then (in an ideal world) re-sign him to a deal that might be a marginal overpay, but would probably be much more palatable for the FO/ownership if they can think of it as "I'm shelling out $20-some mill every year for Lester, these prospects, and being able to pick a few spots higher in 2015." Alternately, if some of the young guys seem really promising and Owens continues to progress at AAA, then maybe we give up on Lester and try to make a run at Hamels in the offseason, given that the system would be even deeper should we pull off a lester deal, and Hamels' contract is a known quantity that the front office seems comfortable with

Just so I understand this, if we deal him he will no longer be tied to draft pick compensation. Won't that increase his FA value? Sounds like that would only make it harder to resign him.

I think it's an awfully big leap of faith to assume Lester would come back to Boston following a trade. If the Red Sox trade him at the deadline, they need to be prepared to move on without him.

Buster tweet
In keeping w/market trend of this trade deadline: Good return for seller. (In this case, BOS). Price for Lester, Price undoubtedly massive.

Really hoping we pry Seager from LAD. That is exactly what we need.
