If it's Aviles/Ciriaco, then I am 100% fine with the deal. Neither of them are part of the long term plan. Doubt it's Iglesias, but I guess the Sox do have plenty of depth throughout the minors at SS

Gordon Edes @gordonedes According to a baseball source, the Red Sox are not surrendering a top prospect as compensation for John Farrell.

So the Red Sox got Farrell and saved a couple million bucks by dealing Aviles who was arbitration eligible coming off of $1.2M last season?
Also BP already has their Cot's page with Farrell as the Manager.

I love how Nick Cafardo is already out there tweeting out what position Aviles is slated to play for Toronto... the guy missed the story and now is desperate to try and break some meaningless info

I take out of this two things: I like the hire and like that we didn't give up much in the compensation, and that the red sox are ready for jose iglesias to take the reigns next year

So they turn Yamaico Navarro and Kendal Volz into 2 years of Aviles, and then move Aviles for Farrell, and possibly Adam Lind? Not that Lind is great but he's a decent power hitting stopgap at 1B for next season

If its Aviles for Lind, I guess that makes sense for both sides. Blue Jays want a new SS and the Sox need a 1B.
The bad news out of this is that this could mean that the Sox are planning on going with a platoon of Lind/Gomez at 1B in 2013, which isn't very intimidating to face as a pitcher. I guess 1B and SS will have to be our # 8/9 hitters next year...
In other news, I heard that Torii Hunter is interested in joining the Red Sox, but only if Big Papi returns.

Don't rule out a Lind/Sands platoon in LF.

Lind, Pedroia, Iglesias, Middlebrooks, Salty/Lavarnway, Ortiz, Ellsbury, Ross, ??
That's not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be, and that assumes they don't get any offense in the offseason

If we get lind back I think it is actually a great deal. The guy was an all star three years ago and he has good power. He might just need a fresh start to regain his form

Given what is available I can see a Lind/Gomez platoon, of course they are loath to carry to 1B ususally given their preference for extra relievers.
Gomez didn't perform well vs. LHP in his small sample in Boston, but his minor league splits make him look like he should be able to hit LHP. Vs. LHP: 2012 in Pawtucket .317/.362/.717/1.079 and 2011 in Gwinnett .309/.371/.564/.935

Don't rule out a Lind/Sands platoon in LF. Good point, that would allow the Sox to look to acquire either a 1B or OF this offseason (in addition to Ross/Ortiz). That way Lind could plattoon with Sands/Gomez depending on which position the Sox don't fill. I think OF will be easier to fill based on the FA market (and I'd prefer to stick Ross in LF).

In context last year the blue jays were asking for buchholz or daniel bard(before we ruined him). and a year later all we gave up to get him was mike aviles. I'd say we did a pretty damn good job

From Pete Abraham "This could somewhat explain the #RedSox refusing to play Aviles the last week of the season. Maybe they anticipated this happening."
WTF?

I wonder if he will bring over Lovullo for his coaching staff...Sox interviewed him for manager last year. Then again, he's the Blue Jays 1B coach, so I assume he would need an "upgrade" to bench coach, which Bogar is currently occupying. Either way, we need a pitching coach and hitting coach.

While Mike Aviles was probably not going to return as the starting shortstop for the Boston Red Sox next year, it's not like he's a throwaway guy either. A career .288/.308/.408 hitter who plays average to plus defense at both middle infield positions (and even 3B and LF) is very much an asset, especially since he has two years of team control left. He grades out to 2.3 WAR per 600 PAs over his career and is either a very, very good utility player or a league-average starting SS. He's not just a spare part and even if the Red Sox weren't going to keep him this offseason, they could have traded him and gotten something useful for him in return. Just something to remember.
