I like it... I think Ben's deserves a shot with a guy he's comfortable with. Bellichick was pretty much toxic, but Kraft and the Pats had a certain comfort level with him, and that certainly worked out...
Ausmus sounded great, and am impressed that he came so prepared, although, this position is a fishbowl, and I wonder whether this market is the place for a first time manager.

the important thing was that it appears that Cherrington was able to make this pick, and that the bonus was that ownership was all in with that selection.

If you were concerned that the team might not contend for the post season, then I would go out and try to acquire an Andrus or another proven SS. But with the rebuilding mode the Sox are in, it wouldn't hurt to go with Iglesias/ Ciriaco /DeJesus combo until Boegarts is ready.

One request-- unless you have sourced reports, please keep the Lucchino vs. Cherington speculation to a minimum. It is almost entirely gossip fodder and clogs the thread up with unsubstantiated and inane conspiracy theories. Thanks.

David Carpenter is on the 40 man. Does he have options? Bullpen can get crowded.

Looks like the Sox are getting David Carpenter back in the Farrell deal.

With two carpenters on the 40 man roster, here's hoping the Sox can build something good.

David Carpenter has command issues but has back-end bullpen potential if he can refine his control. I'm not sold that he can, however. He does have an option remaining.

Good, because you can never have right-handed relief pitchers with decent fastballs who could be good if they could just develop some control. That's been a real weak area.

Scott Lauber @scottlauber "No plans whatsoever" to have Farrell leave until he told Anthopolous it was his "dream job." Henry called Beeston about a day later #RedSox

Scott Lauber @scottlauber "No plans whatsoever" to have Farrell leave until he told Anthopolous it was his "dream job." Henry called Beeston about a day later #RedSox Shocker. The fact that he never came out and said he didn't want the job was the key point. I'm also of the belief that they can make the playoffs next year, with Iglesias at SS. Obviously thats contingent on them getting a SP and maybe some help at 1B, but I really don't think this team is as far away as many seem to think

If you can call anything done by a GM who's been on the job a year "classic," this is classic Ben C. The guy clearly loves stockpiling pitchers at the AAA level ... seems you can't go wrong betting on a pitcher coming back in any Ben C deal.

If Farrell is free to hire his own coaches, unlike Valentine, Butterfield and Rivera would seem to be natural choices for the staff.

Glad to see that it was Carpenter and not Lind coming back to the Red Sox. It appears likely that Carpenter will likely be exposed to the Rule 5 draft as he likely would have been if he remained with the Jays.
I assume that at least Butterfield and Lovullo will join Farrell's staff with the Red Sox.

The coach I REALLY care about, that Farrell hires, is the PITCHING coach. Living in the Sarasota area, you see a lot of the "mad genius".....Rick Peterson. He certainly got a lot of high marks with the Orioles for his work as their minor league pitching coordinator. Hope who ever we hire, this is the beginning of a new era in which our pitching becomes a big focus.

sibbysisti is right, David Carpenter is not eligible for the Rule 5 draft because he is on the 40-man roster already. However, he might be a DFA or trade candidate given the glut of right-handed relievers in the system.

I hope this means Jose gets at least a half season to play ss and see what happens.
Good luck to Farrell.
I'm starting to think the sox may really be thinking long term.

Glut is the right word. It seems all the guys we have acquired lately have lots of velocity but are a little short on control. Spaghetti at the wall maybe.

I'm pretty sure adiospaydro was referring to AA's comment that Carpenter was going to be removed from Toronto's 40-man roster anyway, insinuating that would happen here as well.
This is the third time Carpenter has been traded. Drafted by the Cardinals, he went to the Astros for Pedro Feliz in 2010, and was part of the big 10-player trade between the Astros and Jays in July that involved J.A. Happ, Brandon Lyon, Francisco Cordero, and Ben Francisco.
