Rosenthal: Sources: #RedSox in agreement with free-agent outfielder Chris Young on a multi-year contract, pending a physical.
Still not sure how this works since he's been looking for 400 ABs-type playing time and is only effective vs. lefties. Would be a great platoon guy but really not someone I want to see in the OF 5 days a week.

Well now, so which of the trio is going? My guess is JBJ but maybe not?

I don't think any of the trio are gonna go. Young is a platoon bat at best. With that said really like this signing.

It's a fourth outfield signing.

It's a fourth outfield signing. “@mikesilvermanbb: Per @ken_Rosenthal, Red Sox agree to multi-yr deal w OF Chris Young. Talks began GM mtgs early Nov. Speculation of OF trade now rising.”

Any word on the contract size? Fangraphs had the median at 2/12 - I'd be alright with that

How about a trade at the deadline if Benintendi has a hot summer?

I think a trade involving one of Bradley or Castillo could happen, but this signing doesn't make it any more likely than it was yesterday.
Benintendi will start in Salem I believe, so I don't think he'll be in the majors before September at the absolute earliest. If he is, then he would be having an insane season, which I would be all for.

Counting down the days until I'm b*tching about Farrell starting him against RHP. This is who we should have signed in 2014 instead of Grady Sizemore.

I like Chris Young as a 4th OF/platoon partner as he kills lefty pitching, but it still seems a little odd.
Is he platooning with JBJ so that Bradley doesn't start against lefties and Mookie shifts over to CF?
Or is he supposed to replace Castillo if Rusney flops or gets hurt?
Or is he supposed to platoon with Brock Holt if Rusney flops or gets hurt?
I guess they could deal Bradley (I'm guessing Castillo is not really that coveted at this point) and move Mookie to CF, but I wouldn't be too happy to see Young getting 400 ABs. They'd have to get themselves a viable LH bat or they could punt the 12th pick and really increase that payroll (assuming they pick up either Price or Cueto) and sign Alex Gordon for LF? Or maybe JBJ plus emptying out their farm system is the plan if they don't get Price and they have to deal for a "young ace/Cleveland starter" and sign Gordon (I hope it doesn't come to that).
I'm hoping he's just a platoon partner for JBJ when all is said and done.

It's a fourth outfield signing. I hope so but reporting at the GM meetings was that Young was specifically seeking a role as a starter and was looking for a team that would give him that. Of course, maybe no team stepped up with such an offer. I love this move if it's a straight platoon with someone who offers solid defensive value and gets on vs. righties (i.e a Gerado Parra type). Like the move as a 4th OF. Hate the move if he has been signed as a regular.

He is a platoon candidate and nothing else. No way he starts. But with that......who would he platoon with? Jackie? I doubt it. At least not a full platoon.
I guess Holt and/or Shaw could potentially platoon with Chris Young in left field if necessary. I know they were looking for a right-handed 4th outfielder, I just hope they don't have real grand plans for Young. The way Castillo finished last season, it seemed like a platoon with him may be considered. Now.....I'm not sure. If not pricey, it's ok.

He could also DH vs LHP to either give Ortiz rest or fill in when injured. Plenty of playing time to go around.

Two things: -Dave Cameron notes that Chris Young is an extreme pull hitter and an extreme fly ball hitter, both traits that fit Fenway like a glove: www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/red-sox-sign-chris-young-the-shorter/-Chris Young is clearly a platoon player, but he's not that bad versus righties. He has a 82 wRC+ versus RHP over the last three years (654 PAs) and an 83 wRC+ versus RHP over his career, which is bad, but not unplayably bad (it's above replacement level, if not by much). He might be a better hitter versus RHP than Rusney Castillo, for instance (not that that's a high bar or anything).

They signed him for any and all of these reasons.

Hopefully hes a fourth outfielder and not a regular. The idea of Rusney, JBJ, and Betts patrolling the outfield and catching everything was really starting to grow on me

Yeah, those reasons aren't really mutually exclusive. He's probably both a JBJ platoon partner and a Castillo caddy. Depending on the dollars, I think it's a fine signing.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and expect much more than 2/12 for his contract. Doubt he gets full playing time, and assuming Dombrowski is comfortable paying a premium for having him as a 4th OF.
