Next season, the Red Sox should consider rotating DHs so they don't need to rest players as often and play with a scrub lineup. I'm with you, and I'm guessing most everyone on this board is. But I have a feeling that ownership is going to want to have a full-time DH, be it Hanley or one of Toronto's sluggers if Hanley is a first basemen going forward. Rotating people through the DH spot, like bridge years, seems like one of those things the Red Sox consider beneath them, for better or for worse.

Before I'm giving out $100 million to Bautista at age 35, I'm thinking about how Benintendi, Moncada and Devers will fit in the lineup in 2-3 years or less.

Has this been cited yet? 'Sandoval's older brother, Michael Sandoval, a former minor league infielder with the Minnesota Twins, believes the conditioning issues stem from the "lack of professionalism and seriousness" of Sandoval's personal trainer, Rafael Alvarez. Michael Sandoval accused Alvarez of not adhering to the workout goals outlined by the Red Sox. "There was never a conditioning plan as such, but the Red Sox offered their staff to support Pablo in his exercise routine. They met with Pablo's personal trainer, and they handed a workout plan to be followed for Pablo, but his personal trainer never did it," Michael Sandoval wrote in an email to ESPN. "[Alvarez] isn't guided by this plan, as shown by the results so far."' espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/15449372/pablo-sandoval-boston-red-sox-set-miss-rest-season-shoulder-surgery

I was thinking of a Swihart for Mazara deal. Both are controllable with upside and are at positions of depth in their respective team. Probably have to include other pieces to make it even. After that trade you then have plenty of time to evaluate JBJ and Benintendi. That would be outstanding. Not sure why Texas would agree to it though. Mazara isn't easy on the eyes at first with that splayed all over the place batting stance but he might be the AL batting champ some day and he's got RF-in-Fenway range. Did you see that throw from Mazara last night to gun down Michael Saunders on a sac fly...medium depth, near the line, threw a seed about 7 ft off the ground on the fly. Looked like Dave Winfield.

I'm just calling it as I see it. I think the Sox are going to take Hanley playing well at first as an excuse to pay a big-name slugger to DH. I'd rather they look in-house with Ramirez at DH and Sam Travis at 1B.

This is what I disagree with. I think this is a roster with veterans with injury histories who they should be giving regular days off (Pedroia, Ramirez, Ortiz) and young players who have rarely or never played a full 150+ game season and who they don't want to wear down (just about everyone else). Remember, this is a team without many position players in that age 26 to 29 sweet spot where they have a sustained track record of health/performance but are still in their physical peaks. With that kind of roster, I think you need to give guys regular days off throughout the season to keep them fresh and to build depth in case of injuries or underperformance. I get the argument with Pedroia and Ramirez, but I still think it's giving them one day off a month, plus one DH day a month. The other guys are in their prime physically. Even though the track record isn't there in terms of results, they are at their physical peaks, and barring a mental health day, they don't really need to sit. I mean, how often are you going to sit Mookie (1.070 ML service days as of November), Bogaerts (2.042), JBJ (1.150), and Shaw (26 yo sweet spot) unless they are hurt or struggling? But even if you feel that each player needs to sit once every other week (plus built-in off days which are also basically every fortnight) then you can easily do that with Holt switching positions, and Chris Young getting a start. Basically, you can sit someone any time there's a LHP on the mound, which should be plenty often enough. And if someone gets something nagging, just call up Marco. He'll be up to speed because he's been playing every day, so you'll be able to slot him in and get his best. I think all of Pedroia, Ramirez and Ortiz are guys you'd like to start no more than 130 or 140 games a year (in other words, they should rest about one game out every five or six). Those guys have averaged 130, 106 and 142 games over the last three years, respectively, and the first two have a history of getting nicked up while the latter is 40. With the younger players, they haven't really experienced the grind of a full MLB season, and there is research out there showing that that grind does hurt performance and lead to increased injury risk. It's the next great frontier in baseball analytics, and the early returns point towards the advantages of giving guys regular rest. Young is going to face all left-handed starting pitchers anyways, so all your plan is doing is overloading Brock Holt (who has a history of wearing down when he has to play too much). I think, ideally, they add a LHH corner outfielder who plays roughly 40% of the games (roughly half the time there's a RHP on the mound). The difference between De Aza and, say, Chris Young or Josh Rutledge or Marco Hernandez over 50 or 60 games isn't huge, so maybe it's not worth picking up that additional salary and giving up a prospect in return, but it could be a way to pick up a little bit of extra production for reasonable cost, and every little bit counts in what should be a tough divisional race.

I can see the sox really wanting to sign EE or Joey Batts, but I have a feeling after the last 2 $100 mil deals (Hanley/Pablo) someone will nix that suggestion, probably JH. Obviously Hanley may turn out to be a productive player, just not sure 88 mil worth. It's amazing how many of these deals turn out REALLY bad.

At FG, Dave Cameron speculates the Brewers are ready to move Ryan Braun and has the Sox as a likely landing spot (although his speculation that we would also be interested in Lucroy is wack). Not a non sequitor: someone opined that if Moncada continues to be erratic or unimpressive at 2B, they won't try him at 3B, which makes zero sense to me. Plenty of guys can play 3B but not 2B. It's not in the team's interest to move Moncada to the OF and be forced to trade him or one of the three Bs, or rotate one at DH every day; a lineup with Moncada at 3B and Shaw at 1B remains the thing to dream on. In that scenario, Travis is trade bait or a great bench player, or ends up at DH and Hanley gets dealt. Now, if you add Braun into the mix, he'd be the DH starting in 2017, and for that year it actually buys Moncada (and if needed, Travis) more development time. In 2018 you hope to have a Hanley / Shaw / Travis logjam at 1B, with either Hanley or Travis (if he wasn't dealt already) or both getting dealt. So I don't think that Braun, at the right price, is an unworkable idea. It would certainly make this year's lineup ridiculous.

I wouldn't give up at Moncada at second for a while. He's got the actions to stick there; he just needs to get more consistent. Maybe he doesn't, but there didn't seem to be anything about his quickness or athleticism that would force a switch. And the issues he has at second would be as bad at third; you don't gain anything.
Man, the headline of this thread really highlights the progress Hanley has made.

Next season, the Red Sox should consider rotating DHs so they don't need to rest players as often and play with a scrub lineup. Or maybe get a manager who can stagger rest days and keep guys fresh without putting out a total scrub lineup? Hmmmmm. I don't know. Part of me prefers the one day where you dump your bench to the many days of lessening your lineup a little bit. However, this teams bench isn't a huge huge drop off if they are facing LHP in theory so if that's the case then whichever way they do it it shouldn't much matter. Hannigan in for Vazquez in a one game situation that's kind of a wash. Young in for Holt should be an upgrade Rutledge in for Pedroia/Hanley/Ortiz is a big drop

Dagnabit Hanley, you're making his point! So we're arguing over whether they start 130, or 150? I'm cool with anywhere in that range but yes, they're going to need some better bench players. I originally thought (perhaps most did?) that with both Shaw and Sandoval, they'd have the ability to rest just about anyone on the field, as Shaw coulda theoretically played LF (or 1B) on occasion, while Holt moved around to protect the rest of the team. His injury has an impact on at least that 1B proposition. Obviously Castillo is the other missing piece (in the sense that he sucks) of the perfect bench that we had lined up. ADD: To your original point that Marco should be on the team, I wouldn't be surprised to see Marco back up when his 10 days are up. Also, the Sox have a free 40-man spot when they move Pablo to the 60-day.

Speaking of which. The other day when Ortiz got the blue Gatorade bath outside their dugout was the first time I saw Guerin Austin from head to toe. Really put together well. Also, was a good sport despite getting half the Gatorade being poured on her.

Has there been any Panda sightings? Curious how much working out he's been able to do. Thought we'd have some sort of update.
Hanley's been a pleasant surprise at first and I think he'll play there at least another season before DHing.

It's essential that the RS find ways to keep Hanley on the pine for stretches next year. He has a $22 million option for 2019 that will vest if he gets 1,050 PAs in 2017 and 2018. It would be BB malpractice to let that vesting take place and I don't care if it takes a platoon, phony DL stints, staged, fake kidnappings of HanRam, whatever, they can't let it happen.
I'd like to see them get a LHH for the bench who can take a lot of the ABs at 1B. That would make them a better team and keep the option from vesting. The problem is that with rosters being as tight as they are, it's hard to carry a pair of platoon corner IFs.

This is like an optical illusion: We set the bar so low before the season for that brainless clown, that being bad at 1st base has been a "pleasant surprise".

That's more or less what I argued he'd be when everyone else was foreseeing a -20 disaster, and it's plenty decent if he hits like himself. He's .346 / .469 / .586 since June 24 (181 wRC+) -- despite being 3 for his last 21 with a 2B, BB, and 6 SO. That's how hot he was in the previous 10 games. He's shown he still has the skills; he just needs to keep his mechanics right for more than 10 games at a time.
