Ryan Scott's statistics are very solid. He's from a small school in a weak conference, but 12 bombs in 54 games while striking out less than 13% of the time is pretty good. Good senior pick. He was ranked as a non top 500 'notable' player by BA.

Nothing like giving $3-4 million to a 17-year-old with "immaturity and idiocy" (per Keith Law) issues. What could possibly go wrong? By now they've already spoken to the selectee, his family, coaches, and maybe others who have had contact with him over the years and have a good handle on his character. Before they put their John Henry to the contract, they'll be reasonably certain he won't be a problem. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it is not like a Manzel situation where the flaws are well known.

Are there any scouting grades on him by PG, BA, MLB?

I don't think we've seen one of the 20 best available players (ranked ranging from 34 to 145) picked in a while. I wonder if most of them are going to go after round 10 first thing tomorrow?
Edit: Best being defined my MLB.com

Probably need senior signs from 8-10 to be able to even offer Groome 4 mil, and even then, would need some underslot from Chapman or others.

No, Scott went to Arkansas Little Rock. The main campus is in Fayetteville.

Allen Marrero, C, Puerto Rico ... #446 on BA Top 500. Likely very signable for sub-slot if they are picking him here.

Good diversity selection. We don't have a Marrero from that region.

From the So Cal National Travel Team site: "Perez’s teammate at the International Baseball Academy and on the SoCal NNT Blue, Alan Marrero (2016, Bayamon, Puerto Rico), also showed off intriguing defensive tools. The compactly built 5-foot-8, 185-pound catcher certainly looks the part behind the plate and he showed good lateral movement, footwork and the ability to explode out of his crouch. Marrero threw out a runner trying to steal second base early in the game, showing off a strong, accurate arm and turning in a 2.0 second pop time. He also showed that he wasn’t scared to throw behind runners, doing so on a number of different occasions. That aggressiveness paid dividends as Marrero was able to take advantage of a high and outside fastball and quickly fire down to second base in just 1.83 seconds to backpick a runner that had taken an aggressive secondary lead. The righthanded hitter also has some hitting tools, with some bat speed and strength and he flashed the ability to use the entire field, hitting a single to right field in his first at-bat."

Just checking by how many players being drafted from their position. I'm surprise by only (3) 1B is taken in entire 8 rounds of draft. Is 1B really bad for all prospects from their HS & college levels?

Is 1B really bad for all prospects from their HS & college levels? There just aren't many 1b prospects. Someone who can't stick at 3B or OF ends up getting moved to 1B much later. It's hard to draft 1B-only prospects because they have no floor if they're not super elite hitters.

Looks like groome wont even be getting offered 4 mil. My guess is that Scott gets $10k and Marrero gets $80k. Therefore, there is now an additional $301k to spend. Assuming it all goes to Groome, BOS can now offer him $3,192,800 (#12 slot) + $301,000 (round 7/8 savings) + $349,870 (5% overage) = $3,843,670. One more senior sign in rounds 9 or 10 and they should be very close to $4mm.

Bobby Dalbec will be starting Game 1 of the Super Regional tonight versus Mississippi State. It is his 5th start of the year and 25th appearance. I believe it is televised on ESPN2, right now (6 pm EST).

Keith Law may be a reasonably good judge of talent, but he's also an intensely self-absorbed, condescending little pr*ck who's really not in any position whatsoever to be judging others' character.
