Both Leon and Ortiz should be getting at bats this inning.

Starting with todays game and the KC series we are facing four of the hottest starting pitchers in the league!

I though the Red Sox would have the advantage by having young players being able to grind out the long season.

Tigers split was inflicted on the team by the manager. This one is about to be, more from last night than today, but sitting two 1.000 OPS hitters and letting all the slump guys go is asking for a getaway day loss.

Farrell loves leaving his starters in too long. I know that the bullpen is a weakness, that does not excuse leaving Price or Porcello in for the 8th the last two days or letting Pommeranz start the 7th today.

Really needed the offense to come through today and put up a few runs.

I know we are supposed to love pitcher's duels - but just a few mental lapses today (players, manager) made this one yet another root canal like game to watch. Too many holes in the lineup (again)...some batting averages are dropping at an alarming rate.

Nothing wrong with leaving Pomeranz in to start the 7th. He was rolling and his pitch count wasn't too high. If Farrell had gone to the bullpen and it gave up the go ahead run, we would all be blaming Farrell for taking Pomeranz out too soon.
Today's loss Is squarely on the offense for giving away outs and at bats in key spots.

I think JA Happ will get touched up by the Angels tonight. They get on hot streaks with their bats and it started last night we will still be tied for first going into the KC series.

How is it possible to have 25% more ground into double plays than sac flies with the bases loaded??
It seems any game there is a late inning failure with the bases loaded, it is a dreadful loss.

Hey it was still a good road trip. Congrats to the guys for playing well. 7-4 is indeed a good roadtrip but when you factor in 3 losses that should have been wins, it's not that great. 10-1 sounds a whole lot better.

It's kind of the story of the season. The Sox are a very good team who should be markedly better than they are. They should be resting comfortably in first place. Instead the way they let winnable games and series slip away, they'll probably wind up in the 1 game playoff.

Tough to win any series when you waste this many chances on the offense. We had losses on the manager, on the starting pitchers, on the bullpen, but these past 2 are solely on the bats.

I'd like to see a comparative statistical analysis of John Farrell's in-game management to the other MLB managers before declaring him an "atrocious game manager", because on this board, "atrocious in-game manager" means: "He did something I didn't agree with a couple times Win Efficiency (expected wins based on underlying stats versus actual wins): -10.9 Tampa Bay. I've talked to smart Rays fans (both Rick Wilber, Del's kid, who is a sci-fi writer buddy, and a handful at the SABR conference) who say that Kevin Cash is beyond awful as a game manager. -7.9. Minnesota. Paul Molitor has no managing experience and was just ranked 28th by ESPN.-7.0. Boston. Intelligent and perceptive criticism (by board moderators and a former baseball ops consultant for the team) of specific John Farrell moves throughout the season. -6.9. St. Louis. At ESPN, David Schoenfield recently did a devastating takedown of Mike Matheny's game management skills. -4.9. Washington. Dusty Baker has succeeded because he's an exceptional judge and developer of talent (especially bullpens), but he is a notoriously bad and old-school tactician. Why would we expect bad managing to not show up in the stats that constitute win efficiency? And how much of that I'd just luck. This is way too general to simply put on the manager.

Clay officially back to the pen. Personally I would've gotten one more start out of him and DL'd Tazawa retro back to right after his last appearance. That gets you valuable starter innings and buys you a pen arm til next Thurs.

Sad to both lose Benintendi and drop the last two after stealing the Buchholz-Archer matchup. Welp, onward.

Ha!Ha! Some of the posters on this thread make me sick. We just blew two important games to the last place club, by far. We were out pitched, out maneuvered and out played in each of the last two games. Our line-up today, featuring Young, Hill, Shaw and Holaday would not re-energize a AA team, completely laughable. Hickey comes out to talk to a pitcher about to tank and the illustrious JBJ rolls over a ground ball DP on the very next pitch. Our magnificent all star shortstop is , again, on one of his many funks. He looks just like he did in 2014. I suggest he look closely at the guy that hits before him to get some tips on how you play in a pennant race. The other thing he needs to do is grow some balls.

Sounding the alarm in August is also a bit sickening. As well as questioning ones testicular fortitude. Deep breaths... It wouldn't be fun to watch if we didn't have to claw and scratch our way into the postseason.
