Never understood the thinking process of giving Kendrick two (TWO!!!) shots then Velazquez before giving my boy a second chance! Anyway, I think it's settled now.

He's at 100 pitches, and they have a comfortable lead. I'd take him out now while vibes are good. I'd let him go after first batter and take him out after. Let him have a standing O from the crowd as he heads to the dugout.

Still nobody warming. He'll be back out there for the ninth.
I was also here on Thursday for the Marrero home run, so I may be a wizard.

Is Johnson going to go for the complete game shutout here? This is incredible. I'd take him out and save him for the next start. Let someone else wade through the heart of the order in the 9th, and don't give him a chance to get any late blemishes to his confidence. As pitching has changed, while CG shutouts are rarer, and conceivably more to be prized, ironically, contemporary standards for SP make it LESS important to achieve.

Brian's next start is for who, Boston or Pawtucket? Eh, let Price's next start be for Pawtucket.

Goosebumps watching this start with his family in the stands. This kid has been hit in the head thrice in his career, has been the victim of a carjacking and has dealt with anxiety. Good for you Brian Johnson!

Good for you Brian Johnson! They made a great montage of his day and put it on the Jumbotron, including his family's reactions. It was awesome. Everyone stayed like 10 minutes after the game, hardly anyone was leaving their seats.

lol what did Guerin Austin ever do to Hanley? Feel like he drowns her in Gatorade every chance he gets.

THANK GOD they finally gave Brian another chance. He probably is heading back to Pawtucket, but he knows...he knows he can pitch in the majors and compete. I've always thought he was the only one in the minors who could do a decent job, if given the opportunity this season. He will certainly not do that every time, but he is capable of most of the time of giving us a chance. There is why we give him an opportunity over Vazquez.

Happy for Brian Johnson. Excellent command and control. I also like his pace of the game which was probably helped by the free swinging Mariners. I recall Johnson getting hit in the face by a line drive during one of the Futures at Fenway games. Sucks that he may be sent down to accommodate Price's start on Monday.

Brian's next start is for who, Boston or Pawtucket? You'll want to think strategically, here. This performance gives the team flexibility, something they've really needed given the uncertainty around Price. They have the option of seeing how he performs, secure in the knowledge that there's a very viable alternative if he's not ready. Moreover, you can never.. ever... have... enough.... pitching. Anyone surprised by Johnson needs to go back to his minor league numbers and take a look. He's been able to dominate on a consistent basis at every level for the most part. It's never been about talent. He's simply had a run of very bad luck. He persisted, the opportunity came around one more time, and he crushed it. There are lots of ways to make your bones as a starter in the majors. Overpowering stuff is useless if you can't command it. Pro hitters will wait you out and make you look like a fool - I'm looking at you Joe. Nolan Ryan would have won 400 games instead of losing 292 if he could have figured that out earlier in his career. A guy with a three pitch mix who can put it where he wants, 80% of the time for a strike? Sign me up.

Congratulations to Brian Johnson! This is one of those rare times when I have a big smile on my face watching the game. I was rooting very hard for him to get the shutout! He's gone thru so much and I was glad to see him have a moment like this.
This puts two things to rest. When we think about "depth" starters and we groan about the choices, we don't have to. Brian Johnson is somebody we can feel comfortable with riding the shuttle from Pawtucket to Boston and if somebody gets hurt, Johnson can be a quality option.
In the past some of us used to debate who was a better prospect - Owens or Johnson, and I was in the Owens camp. No doubt about it - it's Johnson. Owens could never dream of having the command that Johnson does. Johnson pounded the strike zone relentlessly and was a pleasure to watch. Doesn't have great stuff but knows how to pitch. Owens can be tough to hit but that's because you fall asleep waiting for him to throw a strike.
It's been a great week. Hopefully tomorrow they score some runs for Porcello, give him some defense, and let him do his job.

He threw 85 strikes today. Loved his pace. Hitters live off pitcher's mistakes. Johnson was outstanding today.
Still concerned about Pom and Price so having Johnson is helpful.
