A dissection of the Longoria deal: www.fangraphs.com/blogs/giants-trade-for-evan-longorias-mid-30s/FWIW, I think the Sox need to look at trading some of their “peripheral” core (good players who still have value), such as Porcello, while attempting to retool this winter and extend their window before a blow-up becomes necessary.

To be clear, I'm not saying the Longoria deal was necessarily a blockbuster or anything. Just that he probably fits more into the former category than the ladder. His lowest bWAR over the last 5 years was 3.3. In fact, he's never put up anything less than that if you take out the 2.5 from 2012 since it was only half a season. He's also owed another $70M or so over the next 4 years. Add in what he meant to that franchise, and I think he definitely hits the qualifiers for "expensive star."
He's hurt now and having a lackluster season, and Arroyo was probably a good get for him, but that doesn't mean I can't pick this nit.

The only things keeping Tampa Bay from the cellar in the ALE, is the injury to Donaldson, the incompetence of Showalter and the surprise emergence of Snell. They are not and will not be a threat in this division for years to come.

There’s plenty of contribution from the entire rotation, Davis, and Angelos to boot.
