Why not give Jalen Beeks more of a chance in the rotation over someone like Brian Johnson? At this point, we know what Johnson is, but I feel as though there is real upside to Beeks. Maybe because the Red Sox have never lost a game started by Johnson ? He also probably has a higher ceiling anyways. Completely disagree that Johnson has a higher ceiling than Beeks. His peripherals this year are incredible across the board. Johnson at best is a 5, but more likely a spot starter/long reliever. I can see Beeks having 3/4 upside. He was incredibly unlucky in his debut.

Is Cora revealing his depth chart here?
In a tiny SSS, Statcast has Brasier as the real deal so far.
Meanwhile, for all the agonizing over the pen, it's blown 4 games all year. And look who's been responsible:
3/29: Smith (-.69 WPA) and Kelly (-.20) 5/1: Kimbrel (-.17) and Hembree (-.13). Also Johnson in extras. 5/9: Kimbrel (-.47) and Barnes (-18) 6/15: Barnes (-.54) and Hembree (-.04)
That's two or three game-damaging outings by the current set-up crew (depending on whether you have Kelly in the mix) all year.
And yet people complain and talk about needing BP arms. I am the voice of reason for a reason. Thanks for the info.

Great way to go into the break in style. Now we should get Benintendi back and have only 1 game remaining before Devers can come back. What a great first "half" of the season guys!

Actually, Hembree on 5/1 was in extras as well.
The current relievers other than Kimbrel have combined for -0.96 wins in their bad outings in games in which we blew a lead (75% chance of winning). In other words, they've been 1 win below perfect in terms of protecting leads. Meanwhile, Eduardo Nunez has been 1.2 games below replacement level.

Papi is managing the world team for the future's game. On MLB Network now.
Mata is probably going to pitch the next inning.

So, Cora at post game presser, indicating serious ligament damage for ERod; that he'll be in a boot, for two weeks, with a reevaluation, at that time...

What we know is Johnson has pitched well this year as a starter and that Beeks has been hit very hard in his 2 outings at the major league level. It isn't the right time to give guys with a double digit ERA a development opportunity when you're in a tight pennant race.

Wow, Basabe hit a HR on a 102 mph 2 strike pitch off Hunter Greene. And he pulled it to RCF.

Johnson has been serviceable and had a good outing, but I wouldn't trust Johnson in a big game. Beeks has a lower floor, but if he can pitch like he has at AAA then he has a chance to be better than Johnson.

Erod has ligament damage and will be in a walking boot. Cora “optimistic” he will retun this year...

So they started out 17-2 and finished the "first half" (actually 60%) 17-3. And they had to go with their #'s 7, 8, and 9 starters in 7 of the 39 games, which is essentially a regular rotation turn.
In between they went 34-25 (still a 93 win pace!) and all but 1 game was started by non-top 6 (Beeks).
They lost 26 games by starting position players in the 39 insane games (Xander 10, CV 8, Devers 5, Benny 3 -- the last 3 simultaneously, of course) and 19 games in the 59 merely excellent ones (Mookie 14 and Xander's last 5).

Speaking of SSS Beeks wasn't even a highly rated prospect in a weakened system until this year. His K rate jumps at AAA for less than half a season and you want to start him over a guy has been successful as a starter. Johnson also more highly thought of coming out of college and in Sox system.

He was on such a dominant run you'd think he's going to take the next step and be the number 2 his talent ables him to be. A bummer

Erod has ligament damage and will be in a walking boot. Cora “optimistic” he will retun this year... What Pomeranz does in his last three rehab starts (or two rehab starts and his return to MLB) will be critical. If he's good, they'll be OK with Johnson as the 5th starter. If he looks unimpressive or shaky, they'll want to trade for a starter.

At this point with what Beeks has done over the last 2 seasons I think a little more optimism is deserved that he can be a decent starter.

I'm not arguing that he's not a prospect. My point is that he shouldn't start at the major league level ahead of Johnson.
