What a bitter sweet way to end the first half. Hopefully Pom can get right and Wright healthy. This isn’t a great starters market.

We're going to trade for Matt Harvey, aren't we? Yeap. Sounds right. What a blow this Eduardo injury is to this rotation. The Sox just lost their second best starter all year. Now we don't even know if he's even going to come back or be any good when he comes back.

Erod has ligament damage and will be in a walking boot. Cora “optimistic” he will retun this year... What Pomeranz does in his last three rehab starts (or two rehab starts and his return to MLB) will be critical. If he's good, they'll be OK with Johnson as the 5th starter. If he looks unimpressive or shaky, they'll want to trade for a starter. What about Steven Wright?

I'm not arguing that he's not a prospect. My point is that he shouldn't start at the major league level ahead of Johnson. I would agree with you on that.

Expect the Sox to be in the Matt Harvey trade discussions.

Anyone think Theo and the Cubs might be getting nervous on Darvish? Its been an underwhelming first year for him to say the least.
Half joking, but if the Red Sox want a starter with upside they need to get creative.

So, Cora at post game presser, indicating serious ligament damage for ERod; that he'll be in a boot, for two weeks, with a reevaluation, at that time... Worst news of the week. He was on such a dominant run you'd think he's going to take the next step and be the number 2 his talent ables him to be. A bummer : Yup. Starter is now the biggest need. I am comfortable with Sale and Porcello. Then there are three question marks.

Red Sox fans:
Close your eyes (after reading this of course). Watch with your mind's eye the gold watch swinging back and forth ... back and forth ... back and forth ...
You hear a voice. It says "It's late March, 2018. The season is just beginning. The bad news is that it will be short, only 64 games. The good news is that the Yankees will need to play 67. The other good news is that I, LORD OF BASEBALL, will spot the Red Sox 4.5 games. The other bad news is that if i sense a single hint of pessimism from any Red Sox fan anywhere I will rescind the deal and the Red Sox will surprisingly manage to win the 1st draft choice in 2019. "
A few seconds pass. The voice retruns.
"Hope it's a great pick!"

It was in another thread but I'll report it again here anyways. MLBtraderumors.com mentions via Jerry Crasnick that the Braves and the Red Sox are both interested in Mike Moustakas.
I would put 3b help way down the list of needs for the Sox (high leverage bullpen help, a reliable backend starter now that E-Rod is out, 2b upgrade) to waste resources on - unless Devers' shoulder is worse than the Sox have reported.
Otherwise I'd have no idea why the Sox would be interested in Moustakas.

I think it's looking more and more likely that John Henry will have to approve of the Sox blowing past the luxury tax limit.
I know it's not great to build an uberteam versus building a long-term sustainable team, but the Sox this year have their best chance of winning and this team deserves whatever help it can get.
In the year of the Haves/Have nots, particularly in the AL where Houston and NY are your likely path to go to the Series, you kind of have to build an uberteam and hope for the best.

If the Sox need a bullpen addition and with Erod's injury, backend starter help, I'm guessing they will be going over the tax limit. Let's hope Devers' injury doesn't turn out to be significant.

At the end of the day, that decision comes down to the owner imo, but if they are going to blow past it, then I say they go far past it (in terms of trying to solve multiple needs and in terms of lowering prospect prices) and I think they need to start as soon as possible.

It would be really nice if the real Drew Pomeranz would step up. If he can come up and save the division from slipping away, then the Sox don't need a starter.
Please find your mechanics soon if this really is a mechanical issue.
This Eduardo injury is exactly the kind of injury that can cost you a division title this year.

I'm a huge Moustakas fan and have been since the Royals drafted him. Where do we play him though?

With all the injuries, the Sox are looking like the baseball version of the Cs.
We need a #3 type starter, a very good reliever and a 2b man.
Oh and we need to do all of that for about 3M.

Scooter Gennett, Matt Harvey, and Iglesias would seem to fit the bill. And they all play for one team. Shame the Red Sox wouldn’t seem to have the prospects for that megatrade.

It's no worse than any episode of House Hunters. "I'm a Mall Santa and my wife teaches kindergarten and sells their finger paintings on etsy. Our budget is $3 million"

Cora says there is “some serious damage” in Eduardo Rodriguez’s ankle. No surgery, though. Reevaluate in two weeks. Hopeful he will pitch again this season. Brian Johnson and Hector Velazquez both staying in rotation.

At the all star break, we are on pace to win 112.4 games. If we play .500 ball the rest of the season, we will still win 100 games.
The Sox have 64 games left, 34 at Fenway, 30 away. The Sox have 10 games left with the Yankees, 7 of which are at home.

Why would Cora disclose the extent of the E-Rod injury, particularly a couple of weeks ahead of the non-waiver trading deadline? Certainly hurts the team's bargaining position. Seems like a rookie manager move.

Seems like a rookie manager move. Has anyone other than Cora used the term "serious damage"? And exactly what that term means is open to a wide range of interpretations. Given recent Red Sox history it would not surprise anyone if Rodriguez ends up needing surgery. The Sox have shown a tendency to downplay the extent of injuries. On the other hand they did place Rodriguez on the 10 day DL which suggests he may be back in a few weeks. The problem is that given the Sox lack of assets and the Yankee's need for starting pitching, I don't see how the Sox can expect to pick up a starting pitcher who is much better than Brian Johnson or Hector Velazquez.

In September we play Cleveland, the Yankees twice, and Houston. We’re either going to want Wright, ERod or an acquisition for those.
I’ve given up on Pomeranz already.
