They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). I'm a mere 65, but I have the same memory. Probably not from my first game, but the first time I came up a ramp that had the right view. The word "breathtaking" was invented for his ... although ut probably has a bigger impact when you're a kid!

I'm bringing my six year old for his first game in Aug against the Orioles - figuring that I'd stack the odds so his first game is a victory.
It'll bring back memories of my first game - Aug 31, 1980 against Oakland when the Sox beat the A's 5-1.
I had wanted to see my first favorite player Yaz play, but the day before he crashed into the wall chasing down Jim Essian's liner and I think he pretty much missed the rest of the season, and he wouldn't play LF again until his final game in 1983.
Glenn Hoffman had a 3-run HR and I think John Tudor got the start. My biggest memories were;
1) watching Billy Martin get kicked out of the game for kicking dirt on the umpire 2) my dad telling Reid Nichols that he had never worked hard a day in his life after Nichols declined signing an autograph for me. 3) a young Oakland outfielder giving me my first autograph which read: To Marc, may God bless you, Rickey Henderson
I can't wait to see that first experience of walking up the ramp and seeing the field and the wall in my son's eyes!
And the cool thing is that right now he has no idea we're going in August. We'll keep it secret until that day. I think he'll figure it out pretty quickly.

It's not quite the same guys, but there are 131 guys with 60 IP and 133 guys who have faced 250 hitters.
E-Rod is 41st in xwOBA but 79th in ERA-. The former is a decent #2 and the latter is a borderline 3/4. He has a huge bad split with RISP, which is not something he's had previously.
And when you add in inning / score clutch, he gets even worse. He has a -0.59 WPA, which is average 5th starter territory. He hasn't shown that problem before, either.
I don't see a good reason why he shouldn't be getting #2 starter results overall, and of course he's had some games like that.
Amazingly, this lack of clutch (of all sorts) amounts to maybe 1.2 wins so far ... folks overestimate the impact of one guy on win totals. But if you've got 5 guys like this ...
(Jalen Beeks, BTW, is 71st and 10th, respectively.)

My first game was August 30, 1982 when I was 11. I saw Ricky Henderson steal base #123 of 130 (he really slowed down after that, huh?). That was the year he had 7 in one game. Bruce Hurst got the start. Mike Torrez came in for the 7th and gave up 4 runs. Red Sox scored 5 in the bottom of the 8th to go up 9-7. Mark Clear pitched the 8th and 9th for the win. His curve ball was ridiculous and that game he didn't walk everyone. Workman reminds me of him a little. Red Sox hit 5 HR. Dewey with 2, Rice, rookie Wade Boggs (rare pulled line drive to the bullpen) and then 40 year old Tony Perez got a 2 run pinch hit go-ahead home run which towered over the Monster, which I remember was #361 and tied him with Joe DiMaggio. Sounds a lot like a 2019 Red Sox game.

Sounds a lot like a 2019 Red Sox game. 1982 was a fun year. The rotation had Eck and Tudor but they were merely good. They'd have better seasons. Boggs went from a nobody to a rookie hitting .349 out of seemingly nowhere. Of course nobody really knew what to make of minor league stats back then. They had the 1981 batting champion Carney Lansford, but Boggs outplayed him. Because 1b was weak, Boggs actually moved to 1b once Lansford got healthy. It was a collision with Lance Parish that created the injury for Boggs to get his break. Yaz got off to a hot start but cooled off as the season progressed. He still had a solid season - and he was 42 years old. They had a lot of those comeback type wins because the rotation was mediocre but the pen had a strong quartet of Bob Stanley, Mark Clear (the one year he was good - he was brutally bad after that season!), Tom Burgmeier (very underrated pitcher) and Luis Aponte. And Dwight Evans was Mr. Clutch. The batting style change that Hriniak had him do plus Ralph Houk (good manager for that time) moving him up to the #2 spot was big. I remember that the team was actually in first place, up five games - it was the first time I had ever seen them atop the standings. But that was the year of Harvey's Wallbangers. The Brewers had a killer lineup and the Ex-Red Soxers, Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie hit them very well (Fisk also used to kill the Red Sox, too), and they passed out the Sox as did Earl Weaver's Orioles. The Orioles actually caught the Brewers on the 161st game of the year, but then Don Sutton and Robin Yount had big games and Jim Palmer got hit hard in the season finale and the Brewers took their first division title. The Red Sox finished only 6 games behind with an 89-73 record. I thought the season was a huge success. Had no idea what a really successful season looked like back then. But it was fun. 1983 wasn't, but 1982 certainly was.

Oh and I just had to mention that I ruined my Don Mattingly and Ricky Henderson rookie cards (some of the most expensive of that time) by having them wrapped up by rubber bands.
This seemed like a ridiculously long All Star break this year. So ready for baseball again.

Personal Quality of Opposition splits for the Dodgers tonight.
This is xwOBA+ relative to the player's overall numbers the last 4 years, versus guys as tough on their handedness as Eduardo Rodriguez.
E-Rod versus righties is classified as 58% average, 42% good. That's relative to other LHP. Versus lefties, he's 51% Subpar and 49% average.
So a 110 would be a guy who is a bit of a lefty-killer against lefties as good as E-Rod, and an 80 would be a guy who really struggles against lefties of his caliber.
104 Seager (L)
100 Turner (R)
099 Freese (R)
106 Bellinger (L) 110 Muncy (L) 108 Pollock (R) 099 Verdugo (L) 105 Hernandez (R) 104 Barnes (R)
Turner and Freese, the big righty bats, don't do any better than overall versus E-Rod-quality guys. The righties further down are more typical.
The three top lefty bats hit lefties like E-Rod quite well.
No, this isn't game-changing, but wait till you see the numbers versus Sale.
For tomorrow night I'll have the Sox versus Stripling.

I remember my first two games with my boys:
Current 15 year old..,Big Papi hit a walk off HR to win the game vs Orioles,
Current 9 year old...DiceK started vs Washington and the first 3 innings lasted about 90 minutes. I took him in right field concourse and he ran outside the stadium. The security guy asked if we wanted to come back in and I said nah as DiceK was pitching. The security guy and I both had a good laugh.

Probably not a good idea to walk people in front of Bellinger, Eduardo.
