The Pittsburg Pirates have a payroll of almost $38M with Felipe Vazquez who is in prison for 4 years making $10M (I'm not sure if they have to pay this or not so their team payroll could be $28M). That's just freaking pathetic and MLBPA should have never given in on a salary floor. I guess the Red Sox should start looking to trade for anyone that's about to hit their first arbitration year out of Pittsburg because all they want are minimum salary players. Heath Hembree is the 5th highest paid player making $2.125M. Bryan Reynolds is in his first arb year and is making 12% of their payroll. Red Sox should go after him to play RF. FWIW, the Padres who'll trade any prospect for anybody was reportedly saying the acquisition cost of Reynolds was too high for their liking. Reynolds is good but I have no desire to see the Sox deal any of their top 3 for him and I suspect it would take at least one of them plus a lot more. The Red Sox problem in trading is that they have three 55s and no 50s, so all of their guys are either too good to move or not good enough to get a big return. That's why I think, for now, they'll focus on seeing what happens with teams making final roster decisions and try to pounce on deals for bench or bullpen pieces on the fringes where trading guys like Wong or Hernandez might make sense, where you're basically giving a team something to jump to the front of the waiver line on a guy who wouldn't otherwise make it to you.

Well, the only thing I know about Reynolds is that he was a 5.5 fWAR player last year (6 bWAR) and he has four years of control. I'm excited about Yorke but I would drive his 19-yo self and a couple of his buddies (not named Triston or Marcelo) to Pittsburgh's High-A affiliate if Reynolds would ride back to Boston with me.
A 5-6 WAR big-league player in hand is worth two in the bushes...

Mookie batting .059 this spring, age 29 season, same as McCutchen’s decline (spring doesn’t matter, but he needs to show some signs of life after last year’s injuries). This season will be telling with respect to his aging curve. If he puts up 5+ WAR this season, he should settle into a 3 WAR player in his 30s, but it looks like he’s trending to be more like a 2 WAR player (his defense has steadily declined since 2018 and his offensive profile has become more dependent on his IsoD over his power).

Isaac Paredes is about to somehow become a hybrid of Randy Arozarena and Joey Wendle.

I mean… Meadows is 26 and not long removed from a huge season. I can certainly see what the Tigers are going for. They were pretty solid in the second half, and they added Baez, Meadows, ERod, Pineda… they may not make the playoffs, but going to Detroit for 3 is not going to be a cakewalk.

I think the Tigers have a really decent shot at making the playoffs and an outside chance to take the division. I wouldn't be that surprised if they did. They had a strong 2nd half last season and have drastically improved an emerging young core. Greene who is hurt is an excellent prospect and Torkelson will be fun to watch. They got promising young pitching. Maybe Mize emerges. ERod should help and their other acquisitions should boost the offense.

Meadows seems to get exposed in the playoffs
.145/.193/.289 with 30 K’s in 88 PA
The more you dig in on Meadows and you get why the return wasn’t larger. He’s basically a platoon corner OF who played a below-average LF last season.

Johnny Cueto to the White Sox with a mid May opt out, so other than Brett Anderson, that should be it for outside starting pitching depth.

The Dodgers are taking a flyer on a guy I wouldn't mind the Sox taking a flyer on - Dellin Betances, the ex-Yankee.
He hasn't been healthy since 2018. Looking back at his career I didn't realize how good he was. I just remember the game winning grand slam he gave up to Hanley Ramirez in 2016 and thinking he's no Mariano Rivera, but then again, other than Koji Uehara for a season, who was? Betances was a lot better than I thought he was.
If he's healthy, I wonder how much he has left. If any team can get something out of him, I'm sure it's the Dodgers. Still, wouldn't have minded seeing the Sox take a chance. Rather do that than watch Valdez or Austin Davis pitch.

Cueto's been one of my favorites for years, I hope he's got something left in the tank. Really fun guy to watch pitch (and obviously very, very good in his prime on top of that).

I also like Cueto and was kind of hoping that Chaim would make a similar move for him.
The surprising thing to me is that Cashman didn't sign him before the lockout for $15m. After all, he was an All-Star in 2014 *and* 2016!

Marwin Gonzalez made the Yankees roster
Bryson Stott made the Phillies. Stott is a mid top 100 prospect with 10 games in AAA. Isn't anybody gonna try and steal an extra year of service time from these kids!?

Well giving up Frankie Montas as a throw in for Jake Peavy was unfortunate.

Well giving up Frankie Montas as a throw in for Jake Peavy was unfortunate. Yea i mean I’ll take the WS over the sub 6 WAR career pitcher thus far. It’s it like Montas has been this complete stud. Would be way nicer has they dealt someone else tho for sure.
