They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

(fangraphs says chris mazza is getting the start, but they might be guessing)

To carry a discussion over from the last game thread: today’s lineup is inauspicious. And we can debate Shaw, Dalbec, etc. but I guess the question is, even if JDM is back very soon, do folks feel like this is a lineup that is going to get rolling? And if not, what to do? Casas? Trade? Accept the inevitable?
To be clear: I think this isn’t getting it done. But I lean towards accept the inevitable. I’m not sure a trade moves the needle. They just seem pretty mediocre in too many categories. I am deeply concerned about my 90 win projection.

Jury is out on Dalbec, I'm not a big believer in JBJ but he has at least shown some life and Hernandez is showing that last year may or may not have been a career year for him. They definitely have some room to improve via an acquisition but I guess I would say overall I do think this is a lineup that will get rolling. But they'd best do it sooner than later since every game is going to be key with how tough this division is. Edit: rather than edit my big mistake of counting Xander twice ill amend it this way by saying I think they have 5 good hitters. (X,Rafi, story,Verdugo, JD). The rest of my comment is still valid though about Hernandez, JBJ, Dalbec etc.

I mean, pretty much everyone thought this lineup was one of the best lineups in the league 13 games ago. And their stinky performance so far this year is close to league average. The AL is batting .229 this year, everyone's offense sucks.

Nah, in my imagination Bogy is Xandys clone.. oopsy

I guess if there’s a type of pitcher you’d be ok with Shaw DHing against it would be Kluber, who has been averaging 88.6 mph on his fastball so far this season
Might be able to get that bat around on him. He looks like he’s swinging underwater against velo

Yeah, it’s also about 200 good AB’s vs about 2500 good AB’s, not quite willing to concede that Bobby is the better hitter. That’s pretty significant….

That was actually 453 PAs last season, not 200. Yeah and he was absolutely terrible for half of those AB’s, that’s why I said 200 good ones. I can say 450 average ones but I don’t think that really does your argument any better, as Story has been demonstrably good for 3100 ABs. Bobby had a hot 2nd half. I don’t think that’s enough to wipe out a careers worth of good hitting.

His wRC+ in August was 213 (best hitter in baseball territory with the Statcast data to back it up). Over 453 PAs, Dalbec's wRC+ was higher than Story's in 595 PAs. Dalbec hasn't had a career. He has had basically one full season and he hit better in his career than Story did last season.

Ok now do it for Story’s entire career, which is actually an established significant sample size and not just essentially half a season of good baseball…

Story's career wRC+ is 1 whole point higher than Dalbec's. Obviously the far better hitter than the guy still developing.

And he’s actually done it over a significant sample, and not 2 months of hot baseball. This isn’t to say Dalbec won’t prove to be better in the long run, it’s just a little silly to me to act like he’s definitely the better hitter when it was 2 months of good baseball and Story has like 6-7 years of it…

All I freaking said was that I am not conceding that the guy with a career wRC+ 1 point less than Story is a worse hitter than Story.

More power to you, most people go with the bigger sample size of proven production especially considering how this is a league where pitchers make adjustments after awhile but to each his own. Maybe Dalbec puts up better numbers than Story does. He better hope he does because he’s a 1B and there’s a guy waiting to take his spot….
