If he debuts in 2025, then it is a wasted roster spot for all of 2024. That's all I am saying. He is very far away to think he will debut in 2024. For most people, you don't want to add them early. In his case, we probably do. Another issue is that if we trade him, the other team also needs a 40 man spot -- and you cannot trade him post-July, if for some reason you might have wanted that flexibility. Is this horrible? No. But not ideal for a guy who didn't even put up good numbers in Greenville this year and would not likely be competitive at all in MLB early in 2024. It's protecting against a game the tanking teams play. Athletics for sure take a flier on a guy like Perales, and a system that's constantly ripped for not having pitching should probably try to keep its few top tier pitching prospects. That's why I said I would add him

Kaleb Ort placed on waivers, per Pete Abraham.

Interesting timing with no POBO. I could be mistaken, but I don't think any dead teams have placed anyone on waivers since the playoff started.

Idea is trying to sneak him through waivers before teams have made decisions on spots. Last year, for example, they were plenty active prior to the end of the playoffs. First few were related to claims but the last few were standalone in anticipation of needing to cut down. No PBOps, but the show goes on.

I think Ort can elect for free agency if he clears waivers, so for Seattle to bother claiming him they must think he has some chance of sticking on their 40 all offseason. I saw some tweet a while ago saying that Ort's fastball characteristics were insanely good in Worcester, so that's probably what is generating some interest.
Waiving a guy that ended up getting claimed while there is zero deadline forcing you into action and you're supposedly interviewing POBO candidates is kinda odd. Makes me think that everyone already knows there won't be an external hire.

This is a very sensible position, in that it makes more sense than other positions being discussed.
Two coaches and a translator on the heels of Cora saying there will be no changes. Ort. Two well thought of minor league coaches. All with Cora in the room? Active, though likely purely speculative discussions re: Yamamoto, Ohtani.
Someone is making significant decisions prior to any real talk of a new PBO. And leaks, some nasty, unlike the last four years. It all seems strange.

You all are overthinking this I think. The team needs to manage its 40-man roster. That is why they have interim people running things.
Is possible Ort has a bad medical prognosis and there's no way they wanted him on the 40-man going forward. Maybe the velo is way off making a fringy 40-man expendable. Maybe Bloom was the one keeping him around and with him gone, the feeling in the room was now clear.

Kaaaaleb sure looks 4A to me.

Possible Rule 5 protects: Bastardo, Bonaci, Castro, Cepeda (maybe group below...), Fernandez, Gambrell So say they protect the three plus one or two from the next group, that alone means you need to clear 3-4 spots. Surprised that no one has mentioned (in this context) Bonaci's trip to the restricted list for either domestic violence or sexual assault. That's the tough way to reduce the candidates.

I hope there's no serious, long-term harm to any victim. Given that the policy is the domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse policy, there's definitely a victim, if the allegations are true. It sucks from a BB standpoint too because he's not an insignificant prospect. I see him and other MI prospects as potential trade chips because they are blocked by MM (assuming he pans out as we hope) and the Story contract. Other teams might not want to touch BB now, depending on the seriousness and veracity of the allegations.

Weiss, Gillespie and Mills are the three remaining super obvious 40 man removals. Then there's a group of 8 or guys I would characterize as borderline.
Deadline to add guys for Rule 5 protection is November 14

@jcmccaffrey Red Sox announce they’ve declined Corey Kluber’s club option. Also, as expected, Justin Turner declined his 2024 player option.

Nothing on Joely Rodriguez's option, which has 0% chance of getting picked up you would think.
He did legitimately look lights out for the two weeks he was on the roster after IL stint #2 before season ending IL stint #3, so maybe they're negotiating a lesser deal to bring him back.

Breslow's first big move and I am pissed!! …..kind of a strange thing to be “pissed” about. I think Garza will be followed by 5 or 6 more outright, non-tender, subtractions from the roster… Need to improve your sarcasm sensor.

I wouldn't even mind if they picked up the option, which is only $3.75 million (4.25 minus a $500,000 buyout). If they can bring him back for cheaper, all the better.
