Weiss and Jacques have to be the next on the 40 man to be jettisoned.

Weiss and Jacques have to be the next on the 40 man to be jettisoned. Jacques might be relatively safe until if/when we find a better LH reliever. I'm not advocating for this, just stating.

Not worried about losing Zack Weiss but don't see the appeal of Gonzalez. He has been extremely bad, Majors and Minors, for two years now.

2022 looked like a tough luck season. Three IL stints for a hamstring strain, a viral infection and tonsil surgery so he didn't play much or get going when he did suit up. And then 2023 he misses most of the year with a torn labrum. Coming into 2022 he was a top 10 prospect for the White Sox although ZiPS wasn't a big fan, projecting him for an 81 OPS+ going into his age 25 season
edit: checking in on White Sox fans and this guy seems to have attracted some extreme for and against opinions.

AAA position player depth with two options left. Probably competes for the bench utility spot with Reyes

Wasn't Castillo potentially one of their break in case of emergency depth SP options? You need catcher depth but they need SP depth too.

Wonder how much cash you get for a 32 year old catcher with 248 MLB at bats since 2019

Dang I kinda liked Castillo, hope he sneaks through. Heineman looks like a solid third catcher.

Might they have a trade in the works involving Wong or McG? They sure have a lot of upper minors catching depth now but none of it seems worthy of a 26-man spot out of camp. Maybe they’re just preparing for Pérez to eventually opt out, especially if Teel gets promoted.

Right now Houck/Winc/Whit are 5/6/7 on the depth chart, I'd hope Fitts could be 8 ahead of Ramirez? (Outside chance we sign Montgomery or some other starter and push those guys down another notch.) Idk, Ramirez never entered my calculus for Sox starters, seems like the definition of fungible/AAAA.

Idk, Ramirez never entered my calculus for Sox starters, seems like the definition of fungible/AAAA. There's also Criswell, Murphy, and Walter and maybe eventually Wikelman, who is currently 11th on the depth chart. All but Fitts are on the 40-man. I don't know who Ramirez is. Behind the dish, after Wong and McGuire you've got the veteran Perez, then a pretty steep drop off to Kolozsvary (11 MLB games, 87 AAA games) and Gasper (22 AAA games), then Teel. None of them are on the 40-man. So it would seem like Heineman (104 MLB games) fills more of a need than Castillo, especially if Perez has an opt-out some time in April or May (which seems likely, given his experience).

One thing I feel missing on this team is a veteran "glue guy" that could help get them back on track if they start badly and some of the young guys struggle. I felt that Turner might've provided that...

There is one open spot on the 40 man after the Schreiber deal. Internal candidates to take that are probably limited to like Luetge or one the NRI relievers, and like maaaaybe Roberto Perez? Other folks on the 40 Man bubble might include folks like Romy Gonzalez, Joe Jacques, and Dalbec? (Not to mention Slaten/Mata if they don’t make the team due to Rule 5/out of minor league options respectively.)
It seems like they have room for another handful of outside additions, even if those end up as like minor league deals to Tapia-types to complete for a last roster spot?

If Pérez makes the roster it'll be at McGuire's expense, so that's still one roster spot.
I don't think there's necessarily anything imminent. Most of the smoke has been around a RHH bat. We'll see.

With 40-man spots needed for possibly two infielders, maybe it is time for Brandon Walter to be add to the 60-day DL. IMO, Hamilton will be sent down as Rafaela is the ‘full time’ SS for possibly the rest of the season. It makes sense too, as OF time is needed for Duran, Abreu, O’Niell, and Refsnyder. Dalbec needs to either be sent down or DFA. He is simply a black hole in the lineup. There are other players in AAA who can play 3B and hit better than him. Today we will find out who the FO sees in that spot.

Redsox.com's injury report does a good job aggregating injury updates and timelines back (https://www.mlb.com/redsox/news/red-sox-injuries-and-roster-moves). Weirdly, Walter isn't on the injury report. Mata seems like he's closer to return since he's throwing bullpens. That being said, Mata doesn't seem like he would make the ML roster so a delayed rehab or other "rest" might occur.

As stated elsewhere, you could put him on the 60-day and have him start a 30-day rehab on Saturday to line up with when his 60 days would be up.
