It maybe time to resign CJ Cron with news Cora fears Casas will have a lengthy absence.

Still not much clarity on if “long” is like 1-2 months, or if Breslow is going to be saying “no one else can add Triston Casas at the trade deadline!”
Anyone have a clue who the supposed opt-out guys would be? I’m very curious who they have in mind they can entice to opt out with the promise of a starting 1B gig

I think Votto is working his way from an ankle thing but I would imagine he has an opt out? Would not hate that at all if he were healthy. I realize he’s old and close to done… but you might only need to squeeze a few decent months out of the guy you pick up!
EDIT:

Some possible minor league/free agent options for 1B:
Ji-Man Choi Matt Duffy Mike Moustakas CJ Cron Wil Myers Yuli Gurriel Brandon Belt Trey Mancini Josh Fuentes (better fielding Dalbec)
I’d probably just bring Cron back. Possibly give a flier to Mancini, though I wouldn’t expect much. He had an ok spring
Edit: scratch off Gurriel

EDIT: Wouldn't mind Votto, if he's starting to ramp up and the Sox are interested I'd guess it'll be a May 1 opt out thing. But given where he's at it seems like you might as well sign Cron or Belt and try to ramp them up now.

My preference would be a Belt Rob platoon but I feel like if they wanted Belt he’d be signed by now so I’m expecting something more underwhelming

With all do respect Votto looks cooked. He’s hit the last two years .205 and .202 He does walk a lot and still plays a good 1B. Has power with 14 homers last season. However CJ Cron is one season removed from hitting 29 homers with average In the .240’s . His glove is average but he provides the right handed pop sorely missing from the line up. I feel in Fenway he could reach 20 plus homers again. In limited playing time last season he hit 12 homers. He’s seems to be a better fit for the Red Sox.

Joe Jacques couldn't sneak through, claimed by Arizona. Compared to last year, the Sox still have tons LH pitching options.

Anyone know what the deal is on Mata and Brandon Walter? I know there was some talk about 60 Day IL for Mata to open a 40 Man spot, but saw Pete Abe respond to someone on Twitter asserting that with “League could push back on that from what I gather.”

Per the Cleveland Clinic's website on hamstring strains: "The grade (severity) of your injury determines how long it will take you to recover. A grade 1 strain may take around three days. Grades 2 and 3 could take weeks to months." It could easily take him 60 days to bounce back.

Given that Uwasawa was already on the 40 and a Joely DFA was the countermove, I'm wondering who's going to fill that last spot.
Edit: Perhaps a May 1st roster refugee?

My suggestion of Mata to the 60-day is that he arguably needs "spring training" and this gets him a full rehab assignment in Worcester, but I get that a reliever doesn't usually get 30 there. As for Walter, teams don't like calling guys up to put them on the 60. That might eventually be an option though. Given that Uwasawa was already on the 40 and a Joely DFA was the countermove, I'm wondering who's going to fill that last spot. Edit: Perhaps a May 1st roster refugee?
They don't need to fill the spot until they want to. Given that Grissom and Cooper are (theoretically) pushing two guys down tomorrow, it won't be right away.

That's a real nice looking illustration on the year zerfjan is having. Seems to me more than just a hot streak and some really nice developmemt. If he can put up #s even approaching that through the rest of the year he would seem an easy decision to protect from the rule 5.

Would be an easy rule 5 protection because he’ll probably be on the big league roster soon if he keeps throwing like that

Should we be finding a spot on the 40 for this guy or… I got to see him Thursday in Hartford. He used a 3 pitch mix with 15 of the 47 pitches hitting 97-99 and 32 of 47 thrown for strikes. Eight swings and misses, six of those on off speed pitches (if 91 and 93 can be considered off speed). Nothing slower than 85.
