When they acquired Stanton he was coming off a season where he hit .281/.376/.631. The deal was completed a month after he turned 28. They got him for Starlin Castro. You're honestly confused about why he was in higher demand than JD Martinez? It also came at a time when Stanton’s $300 million contract was a pretty huge outlier iirc. I remember being adamant that signing JD was a much better move for the Red Sox than trying to land Stanton because of the obvious back-end risk of that contract. It's also worth remembering that Martinez ended up being quite a bit cheaper than initial estimates. The talk early in the offseason (when the Stanton deal came together) was that he'd get in the $175-$200M range, which would've changed the calculus. We talked at the time about how Dombrowski had uncharacteristic patience getting that deal done. The Yankees wouldn't have been sweating Stanton's contract if he'd kept playing like Marlins-era Stanton. Instead of breaking after like five good seasons, he broke after one. Even still, it doesn't seem to have appreciably changed their ability to go out and get expensive players - they signed Gerrit Cole and gave Aaron Judge a haul. They've done a bad job filling out the rest of their roster, and it's not clear that's been fixed.

When they acquired Stanton he was coming off a season where he hit .281/.376/.631 and won MVP. The deal was completed a month after he turned 28. They got him for Starlin Castro. You're honestly confused about why he was in higher demand than JD Martinez? Very much, at the time too. That contract was insanely stupid for such an injury prone player with contact issues. That it only took Castro says it all about how little value he had. Pretty sure the Marlins are still paying part of that deal. JDM could hit 100 pop flies to RF in a row in Yankee Stadium that would all be home runs. Even given the fact that Stanton would have been a far better fit for Fenway and JDM wasn't, I was still much happier to have JDM over Stanton as a Red Sox fan.

I am positive that Cora gave you many chances ... You do not get benched after being late to the Ball park only once..... that happens after someone who habitually is late or breaks rules

"That's something I want to see out of my head coach, some fire, some fight for the guys. Instead of airing people out, just have their backs, no matter how many times they are late or how many times they stop trying."
fixed

Cora was literally on the Baseball is Boring podcast yesterday singing Verdugo’s praises as a defender/hitter/base runner, as he’s had for a while. (Now whether he believes that is a different question lol)
Verdugo’s initial reaction was “they sent me to our biggest rival?” which to be honest was mine too. For as well as they have spoken publicly of Verdugo, you’re not sending him to the Yankees if you think he’s going to hurt you.

I’ll be eager to check back on Verdugo’s excitement for the Bronx after he spends July topping out to 2b. Boston will feel very gentle.

Was it Boone or Cashman that threw Stanton under the bus with the injury comment?

Yes, noted players'-backs-not-having manager Alex Cora...
GTFO with that nonsense. I mean, clearly he rubs some players wrong (ERod comes to mind as well), but just accept you don't gel with a guy.

I had no ill will towards Verdugo but after seeing that, good riddance. Eh, I wouldn't be so upset about it. He had to go and we got about as good a deal as we could have expected. I'd rather have the Dick that Fitts and Dugo had become a dick that didn't fit.

So what does Pap really think? Lol. He is right, of course.
For lack of a better word, Verdugo is kind of an airhead.
He has so much talent. He had the capability of being what a young Mike Greenwell was but with much better defense and he underachieved it by a good deal. Way too many summer long stretches of endless grounders to 2b because he's trying to jack homers.
This guy should have been contending for batting titles with 15 plus homers per years and damn near 50 doubles each year.
Instead he didn't get what he should gave out of his talent. He was late, didnt always hustle and who knows what else that we're not privy to? His being dumped was the number 1 thing on Breslow's agenda because Bloom was too gunshy to do it.
Verdugo will do well for the Yankees and probably play well against the Sox as I'm sure he'll be motivated a lot more this year. Ultimately he'll probably parlay what will probably be his career year into a big contract elsewhere in 2025, with Dominguez coming back, Soto likely extended and the team that signs him will be disappointed with his attitude and effort and 2 month long summer vacations he takes with the bat.
It's not Verdugo's fault he was the main guy in the ill fated Betts deal. It is his fault that he was merely ok/good than all star level. He has a nice hit tool, but I won't miss him. Let's just say baseball skills aside he was no Betts in between the ears.
