Don't think Casas is going to get a big offer. The prize is his age 29+ free agent seasons. Median outcome for those years is looking like maybe 2 WAR flat. Red Sox need to be getting a good deal on those seasons to make up for turning 5 years of team options into guaranteed money. Guaranteeing a typical arb pay out + getting a bit of a bargain on 2 WAR seasons doesn't add up to much. The thought of letting this guy leave in 5 years is terrifying. Maybe. On the other hand, I don’t see any urgency to get an extension done right now, either. He’s big and slow and already plays a pretty mediocre 1B. He’s probably destined to be a full-time DH by the time he reaches his early-30’s. How much will he be worth at that time?

Having Devers kind of complicates the outlook too, can’t have two big DH lefties on the books in their 30s making that kind of money.

Normally you'd think it'd be really dumb to share this story unless you had some good news to follow it up with pretty soon, but this is Sam Kennedy so I wouldn't read that into it

IDK. Can we please just plunk down 4x100 for Monty and call it an offseason. He's gotta bite at that.

I think this is the worst PR team I've ever seen, in any walk of life.

I think this is the worst PR team I've ever seen, in any walk of life. The Red Sox 2023 - 2024 media announcements should be a Marketing 101 case study on “how to piss off your customers”!

I'll take listening to Sam Kennedy over Tom Werner 100 times out of 100. He's a bright guy and the Sox are his passion, but he's trying to be honest, yet not too unflattering at the same time about the state of the team.
Listening to Werner makes me gag. He's so awkward. He's always trying to sell you something, and he has no sense of awareness whatsoever. Henry has that sense of awareness, that's why he has avoided talking for 4 years.

I'd guess Pedroia was asking the FO guys, "WTF are you doing??!! Snell and Montgomery are sitting right there! Spend some freaking money!" on that face time call. Don't think he was specifically referring to Hendriks although I doubt he'd have an issue with that one. Not trying to speak for Pedroia, but it's not hard to imagine what he'd say and probably not in a shy sort of way. They got to get that guy back into the organization first chance they get!

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but ca. mid-July 2023 the narrative around the team was that the revamped farm was starting to bear fruit at the major league level, Bloom's approach looked to be vindicated, and they were ready to make a splash in the offseason. Then they had a meh few weeks, Bloom got fired, and - "full throttle" notwithstanding - the entire organizational disposition shifted without any real explanation as to why.
Which is just to say: I kind of get Kenley on this one.

I'm sure he did turn down a few teams. Maybe the Sox had the best offer on the table and maybe they didn't. We don't know. That said if you read the entire interview it kind of feels like Jansen and his wife were "victims" of a bait and switch. I don't think thats entirely accurate but then again this ownership group has done things over the past couple years that would make most business owners cringe.

Remember the good old days when everyone freaked out over, "bridge year"? Theo being honest about the state of the team was considered bad PR. I'll take that kind of honesty right now. Is Tom Werner a liar or is the front office just incredibly out of sync? It feels like they don't even talk to each other. www.masslive.com/redsox/2023/11/tom-werner-vows-red-sox-will-go-full-throttle-in-effort-to-improve-team.htmlwww.si.com/mlb/red-sox/news/red-sox-ownership-blames-craig-breslow-for-lack-of-spending-this-winter-scott7#:~:text=According%20to%20this%20line%2C%20Breslow,decision%20the%20former%20reliever%20makes. www.nbcsportsboston.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/sam-kennedy-red-sox-set-parameters-on-craig-breslows-spending/589381/Is Tom Werner really that out of touch and disingenuous or was he overruled? That's two vastly different statements and you have Kennedy out here bragging about Pedroia calling him up to tell them to stop being cheap, Papelbon relaying the same message, Jansen admitting he's frustrated with the direction of the club, multiple people decline interviewing for the GM position and their payroll has shrunk from a year ago.

“Look, the truth is I don’t know what’s going to happen over the next couple of weeks,” Kennedy said. “So I don’t want to speculate and set myself up for being wrong or misguided. I’m just saying that Bres is always looking to improve the team. And so there are a lot of talented players left out there, big-name free agents, other players who are still available, so we’ll see what happens.”
Honestly, I think the Cubs are the only other team to make even this strong of a "we're open for business" public statement. Just about all the presumed free agent contenders have made explicit we're done spending type statements.

This is a small point, but why exactly is John Henry wearing an "official" credential lanyard - is there a concern some security dude at Fort Myers is going to mistake him for some other 74 year old man walking around the field?

So a day after you randomly share a retired franchise great is telling you to sign FAs, Devers says they need to be doing more as well. It’s like this front office just collectively lost their brains after 2019.
