This hot streak by Iglesias is a blessing for the Sox in more than one way. Without his 1.030ops and the Red Sox hot 8-4 streak, they might be pressured into returning Middlebrooks to the bigs as soon as he's healthy.
Middlebrooks has done well in Pawtuckett thus far (two whole walks!) and it'd be nice to see him return with some timing and confidence.

WMB isn't eligible to return until Saturday. Seems inevitable that Ciriaco is going to get dfa'd. Makes room for a pitcher. And, Holt is heating up.

Ellsbury back. And lefty-mashing Jonny Gomes slotted to continue his amazing success batting second this season:
Ellsbury CF, Gomes LF, Pedroia 2B, Ortiz DH, Napoli 1B, Nava RF, Ross C, Iglesias SS, Ciriaco 3B

.152 ave, 23.6%K, .316 OBP, .362SLG, .682OPS.
But I agree - next time he strikes out he should yell, "Don't you people know I have a .207 ISO!?!"

But I agree - next time he strikes out he should yell, "Don't you people know I have a .207 ISO!?!" Do you not get the difference between evaluating past production and projecting future production? No, he hasn't been good against lefties so far. Yes, you should expect him to be good against lefties going forward. I'm fine with Farrell batting him second. Batting him higher in the order also gives him more potential ABs against the lefty starter, which is the entire reason he's in the lineup in the first place.

I get all that, and in general I tend to agree with it. But beyond the stats and his projections, BBIP not withstanding, I just don't believe he will do better. I've seen nothing in his recent performances to tell me he's getting on track or working his way back toward his mean or median production rates. If anything I've seen a guy more often than not who appears lost at the plate. Which is exactly why I don't want him to get any extra at bats by hitting second. If anything I'd move Pedroia to the 2, move everyone up one and drop Gomes to 8 or 9.
ADDED: I hope I'm wrong, that I've been "seeing" all the wrong things in his at bats and he goes 4-4 tonight with 2 jacks, a double and a walk.
FURTHER ADDED: I curse whomever invented iPhone autocorrection and vow to banish it.

I agree with Guidas. I've seen way too many weak flyballs out of Gomes this year. Guy has a proven track record against southpaws, however, so far this year, I've seen nothing that would suggest that he'll be that type of hitter against LHP going forward. Can he snap out of it? Sure. Do I currently want him hitting 2nd? Absolutely not.

I understand the impulse maybe you hit him lower in the order for now to shield him from media/fan scrutiny or whatever. And Gomes is hitting more infield fly balls and fewer line drives than he has over his career (although neither is as bad as you'd think). But I've seen a lot of "DFA Gomes"-type posts in the last few days, and I want to point out that he's posting career-best walk (15.3%, 10.3% career) and strikeout (21.4%, 26.9% career) rates despite terrible and career-low BABIP (.197, .293 career) and HR/FB (6.8%, career 14.2%).

Ellsbury is en fuego. I wonder if he has been reading the posts about him here the last few weeks. Hope the Sox find a way to win this one.

Good thing Ben didn't DFA Gomes. He's been useful tonight.

Good win for the Sox.

Oritz did not start toward first until the ball landed in the bullpen. He is so going to get drilled at some point.
